HOUSTON GULF COAST CHAPTER OF MDA RECEIVES $224,363 FROM KROGER AFTER SUCCESSFUL SHAMROCK CAMPAIGN

The Southwest Division of Kroger will present the Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) with a check for $224,363 resulting from their annual Shamrock campaign. The check presentation took place at the Kroger at 1440 Studemont Street on May 7th. On hand to accept the check was Karla Hoskin, Executive Director at MDA, “We were overwhelmed by the support and effort of Kroger management and employees on this year’s campaign.” Representing Kroger was Joy Partain, Public Affairs Manager, “Kroger’s customers are faithful supporters of MDA year after year and we’re grateful to them and also to our associates. Over the last decade, our customers have donated over $1 million during our annual MDA shamrock campaigns.” The money raised will help fund services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and Houston Methodist. Funding will also go towards sending 100 youngsters, ages 6 - 17, to MDA’s annual summer camp, which takes place June 6th - 13th at Camp for All in Burton, Texas. MDA summer camp is a week filled with bonding, growth, acceptance and fun. In addition to knowledgeable camp staff and medical personnel, each camper has his or her own one-onone volunteer counselor, who helps with all aspects of both fun and personal care. “It’s the best week of the year” said Sydney Horak, a MDA camper.

important part of the Shield Bearer Dating Violence Prevention curriculum and with your help we are spreading this crucial prevention program to a larger number of high school students. In 2007, Shield Bearer responded to a local high school experiencing a high number of dating violence incidents. Since then the highly effective Dating Violence Prevention Program has been delivered to over 20,000 students in high schools, churches and community centers. The limiting factor has always been funding. Shield Bearer is a 501c3 nonprofit celebrating 10 years of providing professional counseling services to human traffic victims, crime victims, veterans and military families and individual couples and families. Shield Bearer also provides community based prevention programs and services in schools, churches and community organizations. In 2014, Shield Bearer served 15,207 people in the Greater Houston area. • Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

JULY 4TH - INDEPENDENCE DAY

America celebrates July 4th as Independence Day because it was on July 4, 1776, that members of the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. Following its adoption, the Declaration was read to the public in various American cities. Whenever they heard it, patriots erupted in cheers and celebrations. In 1777, Philadelphians remembered the 4th of July. Bells were rung, guns fired, candles lighted and firecrackers went off. However, while the War of Independence dragged on, July 4th celebrations were modest at best. When the war ended in 1783, July 4th became a holiday in some places. In Boston, it replaced the date of the Boston Massacre, March 5th, as the major patriotic holiday. Speeches, military events, parades and fireworks marked the day. In 1941, Congress declared July 4th a federal holiday.

“It started in 2008 with 125 students. This year, almost 45,000 students were tested from more than 330 schools with 700 students being selected as finalists (grades 5 - 12). MathCON has two rounds, the first round is administrated at each participating school’s own campus via an online test. The second round is in Chicago and only for those that were invited based off the first round scores,” said Randall Revere, head of MathCON for Briscoe. Briscoe had four finalists out of a total of nine junior high students from all across Lamar CISD. Meggie Wang, Chase Albright, Christian Navarro all seventh graders and Godknows Peter as their only eighth grader. For some of the finalists, this is their first time traveling to such a major city or even traveling outside of Texas. Briscoe also had five Eagles out of 16 total junior high students become alternates, Luke Damoiseaux, Sophia Lazcano, Mckenzie Quarles, Joseph Burrhus and Hunter Johnston all seventh graders. Even though the alternates didn’t exactly make it to the finals, many of them were happy with the fact that they were even given the opportunity to participate in taking the test. The students were introduced to MathCON by their math teachers and had the options to take the test or not. Some took the test because their teacher or parent encouraged them to, others were already interested.

Zoie Voskuhl, among other students attended through recommendation from their teachers. Students would receive a white sheet of paper with their name and the date they were to attend the workshop. When the idea for the seminar sprouted around the school you could hear most kids hoping that they wouldn’t be chosen for the seminar; however at the end of the experience this as well.

ONE OF A KIND ART

We have a new artist legend at Briscoe Jr High. Xin Zhuang is the new Leonardo Da Vinci. In Spring 2015, Zhuang, an 8th grader at Briscoe, got his art published in the article, “Texas Register.” Students’ artwork is used to decorate the front cover and blank pages of the “Texas Register.” Teachers throughout the state submit arts of different kinds from kindergarten through 12th grade. The artwork from these students dress up the gray pages and introduce students to the important facet of state government. Art student, Xin Zhaung, with his art teacher, Audtrey Feuge and Principal, Michael Semmier.

Zhuang’s drawing was like no other. He had drawn an eagle soaring above tall trees and grasses. “It’s not about winning, it’s about trying your best. I don’t care if I lose, because my friends are happy with and for me,” said Zhuang. Zhuang has gotten his art published in an article and won ribbons for his artwork. There are many different kinds of art that get published in the article, “Texas Register.” 7th grade Eagles eagerly learn how to make their expository essays stronger.

EAGLES LEARN EXPOSITORY

A change in Briscoe’s learning history or shall I say English history, occurred at Briscoe Junior High. On Friday, March 20th and Monday, March 23rd a representative for the writing seminar arrived to our school to give our students a crash course in expository essays.

BRISCOE’S FAMILY BOND

People at Briscoe are close with the faculty members, others are related to them. Most teachers love having their kids at Briscoe with them. It helps them have a closer bond with their children. Some teachers, such as Mrs. Cawthon, have eighth grade kids. This means next year, the parent-child-duo will be split up. “When my daughter leaves, I’ll be really

July 2015

9

sad, but still thankful she will be next door. I have a 10th grader at Foster and several times I’ve ran next door and it’s nice to have that option,” said Cawthon. Other families consist of more than just a duo. The Tamez/Garcia family is a family consisting of: one grandmother, one aunt and a brother and sister who all attend Briscoe. Sandi Tamez, her mother, her niece Kirsten Garcia, 7th grader and nephew, Anthony Garcia, 8th grader all call Briscoe their home. Not many parents get to see their child grow in such an interactive way as the parents at Briscoe do. Parents like nurse, Tiffany Campbell have gotten to see their child grow since the very beginning.

Students actively answer the many questions that relate to their everyday lives.

BUILDING EDUCATION

On Thursday, March 5th some very important guests came to Briscoe Junior High. The Fluor Team (Chris Nat, John Erford, Matthew Bispring, Garrett Bruce and Ella Aubing) came to teach Briscoe’s 7th and 8th graders what it’s like to be an engineer. Fluor is a 40,000 person engineering construction company. In this seminar, the Fluor team talked about what it is like to be an engineer and about the company Fluor. They showed Briscoe students the travel and work experiences and average engineer would have. Fluor changed a lot of students’ minds about engineering. This is an experience most people don’t get to have until they are in college or high school. Several students agreed this was a great opportunity.

STUDENTS KNOW HOW TO DO THE WRITE THING

In a nation writing competitin, Do the Write Thing, two students from Briscoe Junior High brought home prizes. In The Do the Write Thing violence essay competition, Elian Tee and Iris Ung have been told that they have been selected to represent this school.

10

July 2015

Winners of the DO the Write Thing competition, Elian Tee and Iris Ung with their English teachers, Ms. Niesner and Ms. Garcia.

According to them, they did not expect their essays to be one of the ones chosen to represent our school. Tee’ inspiration to write this essay was the children that he had visited in the Philippines. Ung’s inspiration to write this essay was her family’s story and turmoil during the Cambodian War.

All Shows at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company has been selected for an NEA Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for our upcoming production of the Houston Premiere of The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic. In addition, the company has received a Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund Grant for operations in our upcoming season. These grants are highly competitive and we are proud to have been among the recipients. The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization. Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how far women have come in the fight for equality in the past 100 years. July 2015

2015 • Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages. • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

Libraries SUMMER READING CLUBS FOR CHILDREN, TEENS & ADULTS, JUNE 1-AUGUST 29, 2015

Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the summer to encourage reading among children, teens and adults. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs and they are open to everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” images, which became available on June 1st. When the online registration form has been completed, readers will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. The Adult Summer Reading Club is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends organizations that support the county library system. In addition to FBCL and the Friends, the Children’s and Teen’s Summer Reading Clubs are also sponsored by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program materials for public libraries. Summer Reading Club For Children: “Every Hero Has a Story” Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Library programs and activities continue through August 1st. Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number they read or have read to them or on the total number of hours they spend reading. For the first five books read, the child will receive a bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on an action bubble to be displayed in that branch library. The last day to pick up rewards is August 29th. Prizes must be collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on the registration form. Young patrons are also invited to register to win plush book-characters that will be given away in weekly drawings. In addition, the names of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores - donated by the library Friends organizations - that will be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location. Summer Reading Club For Teens/Young Adults: “Unmask” Exciting free activities are planned, while area teens in grades 6 and up participate in the SRC by logging online the time they spend reading. Library programs and activities for the Teen/Young Adult SRC continue through August 1st. Teens are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time they spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading, each teen will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours (1,200 minutes) of reading, teens will receive an SRC trophy. The names of participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card - donated by the Friends of the library - that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place on August 3rd. The last day to pick up awards is August 29th. Prizes must be collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on the registration form. Summer Reading Club For Adults: “Escape the Ordinary” Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate in the Adult SRC by reading books and participating in optional “challenges” that can be completed individually at home. Weekly drawings for an FBCL tote bag and a choice between vouchers for a $5 credit for fines or a $5 credit towards a purchase at the Friends of the Library Book Store, will take place throughout June and July at each branch library for readers who log in and record their reading time each week. BE A MENTOR AND GIVE A CHILD THE POWER OF A SECOND CHANCE

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who help prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering supportive mentoring relationships. These young people range from the ages of 10-17. The goal is to reduce juvenile crime and turn these young lives around to develop a positive attitude for positive results. Our mentors must be 21 years of age, willing to commit to one hour a week for one year and submit to fingerprinting and a background check. There are many zip codes available in and around the Katy area with suitable times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned youth. We are in need of loving and caring mentors for young people that feel as though they are alone in this world. Please consider devoting a minimum of one hour a week that could possibly change a child’s life forever. Many times you are their only hope. Contact Denise Kennedy at CrossroadsVolunteer@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. For more information on our mentorship program, visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.
