MOVEMBER VS. NO SHAVE NOVEMBER (2 CONCEPTS, 1 GREAT CAUSE)

It’s November which can only mean one thing, No Shave November, Noshember or Movember. Whatever you call it, it’s the month to raise awareness for men’s health. According to the American Cancer Society, one in six men in their lifetime could be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The society reported, “There are 238,590 new cases of prostate cancer in a year in the United States.” Despite popular belief this isn’t just a hipster holiday for men to prove how “manly” they are by the size of their beard. At the root of this movement is awareness, solidarity, and promotion of a healthy life style. People often confuse the two, Movember and No Shave November with each other. In reality these are two separate things for one great platform: Prostate & Testicular Cancer Awareness and research. No Shave November: This facial hair growing contest has participants not shaving at all for the month. Unlike Movember, No Shave November does not raise funds for testicular and prostate cancer research and allows participants to grow facial hair other than mustaches. The goal of No Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. As for No Shave November rules, men grow an entire beard and at the end of the November, they shave a unique mustache. With the money men and women usually spend on shaving and grooming, participants are encouraged to instead donate those funds to research organizations and groups that educate others about cancer prevention, saving lives, and aiding those fighting the battle. Movember: Movember started in Melbourne, Australia in 2004 where a group of 30 men organized an event and grew moustaches for 30 days in order to raise awareness for prostate cancer and depression in men. Later, they became known as the Movember Foundation charity. Since that time, Movember has raised over $299 million in global funds. In the US, Movember national partners include major partners Gillette and TOMS in addition to several supporting and promotional partners. Collectively, Movember partners support the global movement by generating awareness about men’s health, promoting the campaign and creating remarkable experiences for participants. What are the Movember Rules? Number one, shave clean on November 1st, you must start with a clean shaved face. Second, for the entire month of November, each “Mo Bro” must grow and groom a moustache. Third rule of Movember, you can’t let your mustache join with your sideburns, that’s considered a beard. Fourth, which goes along with the third rule, no joining the handlebars to your chin, that’s considered a goatee. And the last rule and most important rule in No Shave November, each man participating must conduct himself like a true gentleman. No matter which way you choose to lend your support to the cause, schedule a check up with your doctor and let your facial hair grow free! • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

KATY ISD PROMISE TO READ

We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. For more information, contact Heather Sanders at 281-396-2645.

KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES

November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. For more information, contact Necole Gibson at 281-396-2439.

KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING

KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. In Katy ISD, KEYS offers four opportunities for those who wish to join our KEYS mentor family:

24TH ANNUAL CASA CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows:

Friday, December 11th and Saturday, December 12th Proceeds from the Christmas Home Tour help Child Advocates of Fort Bend (CAFB) advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children in this community. Through its two programs, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC), the agency touches the lives of more than 400 young victims each month.

2015 October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell?

A Fort Bend holiday tradition, the Tour offers guests the opportunity to view beautifully decorated homes in Fort Bend County while helping to raise much needed funds to support CAFB’s programs serving abused and neglected children. Tour hours are 10 AM until 4 PM on December 11th and 12th with a candlelight tour on December 11th from 6 PM until 9 PM. For updates on home locations and ticket sales, go to www.cafb.org/Events/Home-Tour.

We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator.
