Boy Scouts and Flags for GP Homeowners

A Boy Scout troop is interested in placing a Flagpole with the US Flag in your yard. This troop has boys from outside of Governors Place and they want to know if there is a “local” scout troop that would be interested in the following project: For a fee to the homeowner (yet to be determined), the scout troop will purchase a flag and flagpole and fabricate a ground holder in your yard in a location determined by the homeowner. The homeowner can then display the flag on any dates and for durations of his choice (GPHOA has maximum of three days). Storage of the flag and pole should be an easy procedure. To keep uniformity, there will be only one size pole (probably either six or eight feet) and flag (probably 3’ by 4’) available for purchase. If you represent a scout troop that has boys from GP and are interested in doing this project, please contact Dave Gilkeson at either Gilkeson@swbell.net or 281-392-3771. We are planning on publishing this for three months. After three months, if no “local” scout troop is interested, then we will invite the original troop to make a presentation - possibly as early as the annual meeting in January.

Crime reporting

Dear Governors Place Residents, we have seen an increase in activity that required sheriff attention. Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc. We have to crackdown on crime in our neighborhood.

Happy Holidays! December 2012

Maintaining Property Values

One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home. Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do

two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.

Waste removal

Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.

RECREATIONAL VEHICLES

Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.

DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER

• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property. • trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street. • remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars. • store trash cans out of street view. • Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves. • We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric

toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.

PARKING IN STREET

Although the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and fines will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as possible when parking your personal vehicles.

Street Light Maintenance

To report a streetlight that is not working, call Reliant Energy at 713207-2222. You need to report both the number on the base of the pole and the street address.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• Annual Maintenance Programs • All repairs guaranteed • Serving area since 1994

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

281-347-2665 nd

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

New Year Celebrations Can Bring Danger

The New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations can often be fraught with dangers to both people and property. If you plan to use fireworks, please do so in such a way that the debris does not find its way onto your neighbor’s roof or their yard or driveway. Exercise extreme caution so that you do not inadvertently set a neighbor’s home on fire. After you have finished with your fireworks display, clean up the mess so that it is not left as an eyesore for the neighbors to clean. Please confine fireworks to reasonable hours. Fireworks after 1 AM are annoying to most of your neighbors. If you have children, please closely supervise them. Each year at New Year’s and in July we read of children maimed or killed by fireworks. If you must use fireworks, exercise sober care and watch your children carefully.

LOCAL TEACHERS ATTEND TSCA CONVENTION

San Antonio was the site of the recent Texas Speech Communication Association convention (TSCA) which was attended by a group of six current and retired speech teachers and debate coaches from Katy. In addition to numerous interesting, useful and thought provoking sessions on all aspects of teaching speech and debate, several awards were given. Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon.

George Tennison being presented award by Sandra Jones of Alief ISD and committee chair.

Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership. Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.

CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients. “We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.”

Casey Donahew released his fourth studio album, Double Wide Dream, in October 2011. In 2012, the Donahew organization received five nominations at the annual Texas Regional Radio Music awards and in June signed up for professional membership with the Academy of Country Music (ACM).

Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

Living Word Lutheran Church MAKES QUILTS FOR KRAUSE CENTER

Each September, the Piecemakers quilting group from Living Word Lutheran Church takes a break from making quilts for Lutheran World Relief to make quilts for the children at The Krause Center in Katy. This year, they presented Tawana Goodwin with twenty quilts. Each child receives a quilt when they arrive at the Center and takes the treasured quilt with them when they leave.

During the rest of the year, the Piecemakers make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. These mission quilts go out into the world to provide people in need with the warmth and comfort of a quilt. LWR’s goal in 2013 is to provide 500,000 quilts for people in refugee camps or in areas hit by a natural disaster.

The Piecemakers meet twice a month to tie quilts. The public is welcome; if you can tie a knot they need you! For more information, call the church office at 281-392-2300.
