SAFETY AND SECURITY TIPS FROM SEAL SECURITY: STAYING SECURE DURING YEAR-END HOLIDAYS
The increased activity level and crowds associated with the holiday season require heightened awareness of security and safety threats. Seal Security would like to offer the Governors Place community some useful tips to help you and the ones you love to stay safe.
PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE YOU ARE AWAY
Request a vacation watch if you are going out of town. We also recommend placing SEAL as your contact with your alarm company for a rapid response. A SEAL officer will routinely check on your home while you are away. The officers will do a perimeter sweep of the home and check that nothing looks out of place. The request must be placed at least two weeks prior to your departure. Visit sealsecuritytexas.com/contact-us.php and download the Vacation Watch form or call the Governors Place hotline to request a Vacation Watch form to be emailed to you, then fill it out and email it to vacation@ sealsecurity.com. Have a trusted neighbor, relative or friend check on your house and pick up your mail and/or packages daily so they do not pile at your doorstep. Accumulated mail can tip off criminals that you are not home. Do not post your vacation plans on social media sites and be careful what you say on your answering machine or voicemail. It is also not a good idea to leave a spare key anywhere on your property while you are away. Consider installing motion sensor lights that will automatically turn on when someone is close. These actions can avoid a home burglary if you are going out of town.
USE PRECAUTIONS WHEN PARKING
Look for a parking spot that offers good lighting and is close to the location where there are a lot of people. Lock valuables and packages in the trunk and lock all doors. If you take shopping bags out from a store to lock them in your trunk and plan to return to do more shopping, it’s a good idea to move your vehicle to another section of the parking lot or street. Criminals

know that you will be coming back and can ambush you. By moving your vehicle, you give the impression you’re leaving. If you think you are being followed, do not go back to your vehicle. Return to the safety of the occupied shopping area and contact authorities. Always carry car keys in your hand. Don’t unlock the door until you are outside your vehicle. Get in quickly and lock yourself inside.
TAKE CARE WHEN USING AN ATM
If you must use a free-standing ATM, pick one that is inside the shop, mall or in a well-lighted location. Withdraw only the amount of cash you absolutely need. Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you. Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location.
PROTECTING AND RECYCLING PACKAGES
Packages being stolen off of porches are a rampant crime during the holidays. Criminals tend to follow delivery trucks to snag packages off of doorsteps. If you know you will not be home when the package arrives, reroute the delivery to a trusted neighbor’s or relative’s address or your workplace. SEAL will be attentive in this matter. Please be extra mindful in locking all doors to your house, closing and covering all windows so that criminals do not see your valuables. Vehicles should be locked and objects should not be left visible on any seats or floor. Also, placing your empty gift boxes outside for pickup shows thieves what is available inside your home. Recycling is recommended, however, break down the boxes, turn them inside out, put them in your trash receptacle and don’t place them on the curb until collection day. We are happy to continue servicing the residents of the Governors Place community and would appreciate any assistance or other input you may provide to increase the efficiency of our service to you. Thank you, S.E.A.L. Security Solutions, LLC TXDPS C15942 If you have an immediate emergency, please call 911, as usual. GOVERNORS PLACE HOTLINE: 281-749-1300 Our dispatch center is available to residents 24/7.

PARKING LAWS WILL BE ENFORCED
As many residents have noticed, cars parking in the wrong direction on the side of the road has become an increasing problem throughout the community. The officers that patrol the neighborhood have been giving warnings for this, but will begin issuing tickets. Please utilize your driveway and garage and when parking on the street is necessary, please park in the same direction as traffic. Additional parking problems have occurred at the tennis and clubhouse parking lots. As a result, the Board has adopted a Common Area Parking and Tow Policy. The Policy has been filed in the official public records with the Harris County Clerk and is available by visiting www.crest-management.com, clicking on Communities and selecting Governors Place. Towing will be enforced.
DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER
If you plan on making a change to your home/yard, please fill out a Request for Home Improvement - Governor’s Place form. This form (a full one page) is located in this newsletter. • Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property. • Trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street. • Remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars. • Store trash cans out of street view. • Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves. • We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.

CRIME REPORTING
Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc.
MAINTAINING PROPERTY VALUES
One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home. Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.
WASTE REMOVAL
Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.

Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES
November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. On Saturday, November 14th, the Houston non-profit literacy organization, READ3Zero, honored one Katy student at a memorable Luncheon and Book Signing event for this year’s winners of the “I Write” contest and celebrated the organization’s sixth year. The student is Sachi Khemka from Taylor High School. The Awards Ceremony offered individual recognition in the form of a certificate of excellence to each student author and illustrator followed by the Literacy Luncheon and Book Signing with Honorees, Neil and Maria Bush, co-chairs to the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, Luncheon co-chairs Michael Pearce and Matt Burrus, emceed by Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston. The luncheon was held at the Hilton Americas located at 1600 Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010. Founded in 2009 by children’s author and public speaker, Melissa M. Williams, READ3Zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. One of the primary creative projects at READ3Zero is the annual short-story contest, which emphasizes the concept that reading and writing go hand in hand. The program provides leadership and speaking opportunities to the students after they are published. Children are also allowed to submit drawings for the front and back cover of the book. Organizations, businesses and community members are able to help fund the efforts of READ3Zero by contributing support for future projects. Information regarding ways to support READ3Zero and the “I Write” Contest and other programs can be found on the organization’s homepage www.READ3Zero.org.
