Boy Scouts and Flags for GP Homeowners
A Boy Scout troop is interested in placing a Flagpole with the US Flag in your yard. This troop has boys from outside of Governors Place and they want to know if there is a “local” scout troop that would be interested in the following project: For a fee to the homeowner (yet to be determined), the scout troop will purchase a flag and flagpole and fabricate a ground holder in your yard in a location determined by the homeowner. The homeowner can then display the flag on any dates and for durations of his choice (GPHOA has maximum of three days). Storage of the flag and pole should be an easy procedure. To keep uniformity, there will be only one size pole (probably either six or eight feet) and flag (probably 3’ by 4’) available for purchase. If you represent a scout troop that has boys from GP and are interested in doing this project, please contact Dave Gilkeson at either Gilkeson@swbell.net or 281-392-3771. We are planning on publishing this for three months. After three months, if no “local” scout troop is interested, then we will invite the original troop to make a presentation possibly as early as the annual meeting in January.
Crime reporting
Dear Governors Place Residents, we have seen an increase in activity that required sheriff attention. Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc. We have to crackdown on crime in our neighborhood.
Maintaining Property Values
One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home.

Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.
Waste removal
Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.
RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.

• Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves. • We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.
PARKING IN STREET
Although the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and fines will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as possible when parking your personal vehicles.
Street Light Maintenance
To report a streetlight that is not working, call Reliant Energy at 713207-2222. You need to report both the number on the base of the pole and the street address.
DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER
• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property. • trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street. • remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars. • store trash cans out of street view.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees.

Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

47 YEARS EXPERIENCE
MORE THAN 165 PARTICIPATE IN 15TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ PROGRAM
Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 345 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 15th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promised to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during one week in November. This year, ten Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Morton Ranch, Hutsell, Nottingham, Kilpatrick, King, Pattison, Mayde Creek, Griffin, Bear Creek and McRoberts Elementary. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a threeyear period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. “Promise to Read has become a volunteer event that many in our community really look forward to. Most of our visiting readers return year after year,” says Sandi Meier, Katy ISD Promise to Read and Classroom Champions Coordinator. “Having a guest reader in the classroom is a fun treat for students, but it also promotes the life-long joy of reading.” Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: Amegy Bank, American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, CenterPoint Energy, Chick-Fil-A of Katy, City of Katy, CiCi’s Pizza, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Gary Greene Realtors, Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Houston Aeros, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Kelliwood Animal Hospital, Members Choice Credit Union, Memorial Hermann, Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Pediatric Dentists of Katy, Pepper Lawson Construction, Rainforest Café, SmartOrigami, The Shady Lady Window Coverings, Tradition Bank and Wood Group. Promise to Read is one of several community involvement programs offered by Katy ISD Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. New Anglican Church Opens
A new church, Grace Anglican Community, has scheduled its Grand Opening for 10:30 am, January 13th at WoodCreek Elementary, 1155 WoodCreek Bend Lane, Katy, TX. “We are both historical and contemporary,” says Robert Henson, founding Rector. Our worship will include the richest, most faithful elements of the Christian heritage: scripture, song, bread and wine but it is done in a style that speaks to the needs and lives of people today. Our goal is to help people grow in faith. No matter where a person is in their faith journey, we are here to help.” “We also major in kids and youth,” says Karen Henson, Children’s Minister. “During these years, people are the most open and receptive to their faith. Our kids will learn while having fun.” Grace Anglican Community is a member of the Anglican Church in North America, which is part of the world wide Anglican Church, a global community of more than 70 million Christians.
