Join the committee as we celebrate 2014 Independence Day - July 4, 2014. This will be our 30th annual so if we have more on the committee we can do more than a “normal year” celebration. Call Dave at 281-392-3771 if you want to contribute your time to our community.
DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER
If you plan on making a change to your home/yard, please fill out a Request for Home Improvement - Governor’s Place form. This form (a full one page) is located in this newsletter.
CRIME REPORTING
Dear Governors Place Residents, we have seen an increase in activity that required sheriff attention. Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc. We have to crackdown on crime in our neighborhood.
MAINTAINING PROPERTY VALUES
One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home. Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel

WASTE REMOVAL
Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.
RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.
DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER
• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property. • Trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street. • Remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars. • Store trash cans out of street view. • Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves. • We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.
Governor’s Place
PARKING IN STREET
Although the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and fines will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as possible when parking your personal vehicles.
STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE
To report a streetlight that is not working, call Reliant Energy at 713207-2222. You need to report both the number on the base of the pole and the street address.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature

will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

WINTER PET CARE TIPS
Housing: It is best to keep pets indoors during the winter months, but if this is not possible, outdoor pets must be provided with shelter. Their home should be elevated off the ground to prevent moisture accumulation and have a door of some kind to keep out winter winds. Shelters should be insulated or heated. Water sources may be heated to permit constant access to unfrozen water; thermal units designed specifically for this purpose are readily available. Outdoor pets require extra calories to keep warm. Feed your pet according to its needs when the temperature drops. In severely cold or inclement weather, no pet should be kept outside. Indoor pets should have sleeping quarters in a draft-free, warm area with their bed or mattress elevated slightly off the floor.

Frostbite: Frostbitten skin is red or gray and may slough. Apply warm, moist towels to thaw out frostbitten areas slowly until the skin appears flushed. Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible for further care.

HOLIDAY RECYCLING!
If everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. If every household reused just two feet of ribbon each year, the resulting 38,000 miles or ribbon could tie a bow around the Earth. 28 billon pounds of edible food is thrown away each year - serve smaller portions; diners can always ask for seconds. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high or circle the planet 10 times. Annual trash from gift-wrap and shopping bags total 4 million tons. Think about how you can reduce and help our environment.

CHRISTMAS TREE: As lights flicker out on another holiday season, many recycle their Christmas trees through community projects that chip the evergreens into garden mulch. Contact your county to find the nearest drop-off location to pick up dates. Harris County 281855-5600. Fort Bend County 281-342-6171. UNWANTED GIFTS: Unwanted gifts can be donated to your local charities or churches. CHRISTMAS CARDS: A traditional activity, but one which never fails to amuse the kids, is making gift tags for next year’s presents. Use pinking sheers, a hole punch and leftover ribbon. Also, local preschools and daycares often appreciate free items for arts and crafts. CELL PHONES AND BATTERIES: Numerous retail locations will accept your old cell phones and batteries. Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy and several more. Go to www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/ materials/ecycling/donate.htm to find your local listings.

KATY ISD’S 16TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ
Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 375 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 16th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promise to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during two weeks in November. This year, 10 Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Cimarron, Creech, Franz, Golbow, Exley, Rhoads, Rylander, Williams, Wilson and Winborn Elementary Schools. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, BP America, Inc., CenterPoint Energy, Chick-fil-A of Katy, College Nannies and Tutors of Katy, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Katy Family YMCA, Members Choice Credit Union, Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Pediatric Dentists of Katy, Pepper Lawson Construction, Rainforest Café, The Shady Lady Window Coverings, Tradition Bank, Wood Group and more.
During the November Board Work Study meeting, Officer Shannon Taylor was sworn in to serve on the Katy ISD Police Force. Officer Taylor’s law enforcement experience includes having served as a police officer for the Delphi, Indiana Police Department and Purdue University. Officer Taylor is a graduate from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and has been an officer for more than 14 years. After serving for Purdue and Delphi, Officer Taylor served three years as a police officer at Rice University. She resides in Katy with her husband, John Taylor and her daughter. Katy ISD peace officers are licensed and certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education. The Katy ISD police jurisdiction includes all territory within the boundaries of the District (181 square miles) and all property, real and personal, outside the boundaries of the District that is owned, leased or rented by the District or otherwise under the District’s control. Peace officers employed by Katy ISD have the same authority, powers, privileges and immunities as bestowed on all Texas peace officers while on or off duty. For more information about the Katy ISD Police Department, visit www.katyisd.org/police.
Promise to Read is one of several community involvement programs offered by Katy ISD Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. Click here to view a photo gallery from this event.

BP, which has a long standing relationship with Katy ISD through the Cinco Ranch High School FIRST Robotics Program, Junior Achievement and other programs, is eager to deepen their support through the BP STEM Grant Program. “BP is thrilled to support an innovative program that will provide Katy ISD teachers additional resources they need to continue inspiring their students,” said Mike Zanghi, BP Vice President for Wells, Gulf of Mexico. “This donation reaffirms BP’s commitment to STEM education and to the communities in which we live and operate.” The Katy ISD Education Foundation launched its second annual Inspiring Imagination teacher grant cycle Dec. 1st. All Katy ISD educators directly involved in classroom instruction will be invited to apply. Last year, in its inaugural grant cycle, the foundation awarded more than $88,000 to 117 Katy ISD teachers for inspiring, innovative classroom projects to be implemented this school year.
