GOVERNOR’S PLACE NEIGHBOR NIGHT OUT
It is not too difficult to set up a neighbor night out gathering. Just circulate a flyer to your neighbors notifying them of a “Meet your Neighbor Block Party.” Give date, time and location. • The date for National Night Out in Texas this year is Tuesday, October 6, 2015. • The time should be in the evening, say 6 PM - 7:30 PM. • Location should be somewhere in your block or in your front yard. Don’t depend on your neighbors to take action on this - You take the ball and run with it!
BOY SCOUT TROOP 987 WILL BE OFFERING A US FLAG ROUTE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!
The Boy Scout Troop 987 is offering this service to your neighborhood as a service fundraiser. For $35, the scouts will place a 3’ x 5’ flag at your residence on the following national holidays (place approximately sunrise and take away approximately sundown): Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot Day and Veteran’s Day. Monies raised through this project will support Scouts of Troop 987 in activities, such as attending summer camp, going on regular camping excursions and participating in other activities. This service fundraiser will also help our scouts build pride in their community while helping to earn their own way for scouting activities. If you have any questions, please contact John Angel at jangel@crstexas.com or call 713-429-2969. We also offer for a one-time fee of $75 to come and place flag for you and then leave the flag with you and you are responsible for putting out and taking down. Governor’s Place HOA rules - Temporary flags such as these cannot be displayed more than three consecutive days.

SAFETY AND SECURITY TIPS FROM SEAL SECURITY: PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE AWAY ON VACATION
SEAL Security understands how much you invest in your home and belongings, which is why SEAL Security offers Vacation Watch Services while you are away at no extra charge. Officers will visit your home every time they are in your community to check that doors and windows look secure and locked. However, while we try our best to protect your home and belongings, SEAL Security cannot always avoid a break-in or damage to your property. As a result, SEAL Security would like to offer a few useful tips to minimize the chances of a break-in or property damage while you are away:

ASK A RELATIVE, FRIEND OR TRUSTED NEIGHBOR TO HELP
It’s always a good idea to have additional people looking after your home. If it’s someone you trust, give them a key to your house to water your plants, feed your pets and bring in your mail. Make sure to leave a list of important numbers (including SEAL’s hotline, 281-7491300) and a way of contacting you in case of an emergency.
DON’T TIP OFF CRIMINALS ON THE WEB
Don’t post about your vacation plans on any social media sites. This is a very easy way for criminals to stalk your home, wait until nobody is around and plan a break-in. Wait until you come back home to post pictures, tweet and update your status about your trip. You should also be careful what you say on your answering machine and voicemail.

Don’t leave your lights on the whole time you are away in an effort to make it seem like you are home. Lights that stay on all day and night may give away clues to criminals. Instead, invest in a light switch timer that can turn your lights on and off automatically through a programed schedule.

PARKING LAWS WILL BE ENFORCED
As many residents have noticed, cars parking in the wrong direction on the side of the road has become an increasing problem throughout the community. The officers that patrol the neighborhood have been giving warnings for this, but will begin issuing tickets. Please utilize your driveway and garage and when parking on the street is necessary, please park in the same direction as traffic. Additional parking problems have occurred at the tennis and clubhouse parking lots. As a result, the Board has adopted a Common Area Parking and Tow Policy. The Policy has been filed in the official public records with the Harris County Clerk and is available by visiting www.crest-management.com, clicking on Communities and selecting Governors Place. Towing will be enforced.
DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER
If you plan on making a change to your home/yard, please fill out a Request for Home Improvement - Governor’s Place form. This form (a full one page) is located in this newsletter. • Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property. • Trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street. • Remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars. • Store trash cans out of street view. • Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves. • We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.
Governor’s Place
CRIME REPORTING
Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc.
MAINTAINING PROPERTY VALUES
One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home. Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.
WASTE REMOVAL
Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day. After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.

www.dependablecomfort.com RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.
COMMERCIAL VEHICLES PARKING
Although the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and fines will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as possible when parking your personal vehicles.
STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE
To report a streetlight that is not working, call Reliant Energy at 713207-2222. You need to report both the number on the base of the pole and the street address.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Stir in the garlic and cook another 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and Creole seasoning; blend thoroughly. Pour in the chicken broth and add the bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chicken and simmer 1 hour more. Skim off any foam that floats to the top during the last hour.

November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. For more information, contact Heather Sanders at 281-396-2645.

$59 Exam, X-Rays and Regular Cleaning KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. For more information, contact Necole Gibson at 281-396-2439.
KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING
KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. In Katy ISD, KEYS offers four opportunities for those who wish to join our KEYS mentor family: • Traditional Mentoring - Pairs one mentor with one child once a week. • KSR (Katy Students Run) - Matches running coaches with high school students as they prepare for the Houston Half Marathon. • Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. • Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers. KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. All mentors must make a one school year commitment to a student and complete an application and background check. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016
“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.
Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely re-vamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Campy and fun, it is the story of two sexually repressed women who find freedom and passion in
