The other half is listening and understanding what others communicate to us. How can we become better listeners? First step: close the mouth and open the ears. listening takes twice as much effort. Second step: if you’re so eager to do all the talking and not listen to what the other person is saying, they tell the other person “I don’t wish to listen to you, but rather wish for you listen to me.” However, be prepared that this person will one day do the same to you. Third step: stop everything you’re doing and give the person wishing to talk their time; they are entitled to your time, especially children. Put away the phone, turn off the TV, shut down the computer and simply listen. And last but not least, fourth step: repeat back to the person sharing their thoughts with you what you’ve listened to - this is called reflective listening. We all need to just slow down, stay quiet and listen. Check out this article: www.drnadig.com/listening.htm. Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com

What is Easter?
Easter is the time for holidays, festivals and a time for giving chocolate Easter eggs. But Easter means much more.... Easter is one of the oldest and the more important Christian festivals, the celebration of the death and coming to life again of Jesus Christ. for Christians, the dawn of Easter Sunday with its message of new life is the high point of the Christian year.
What is the Easter story?
Easter is the story of Jesus’ last days in Jerusalem before his death. The Easter story includes Maundy Thursday (the Last supper leading to the Eucharist), Good Friday (the day on which Jesus was crucified) and Easter Day (the day on which Jesus came back to life). It is a sad story because Jesus was killed. But the story has a very happy ending, because Jesus came back to life and visited his friends and followers once more. He did not die at all, but went back up to Heaven to be with God, his father.
WhErE doEs thE namE ‘EastEr’ ComE from? Pagan traditions give us the English word “Easter” which comes from the word “Eostre.” The Anglo-Saxon word for April was “Eostre-monath” (the month of openings). However, it should be remembered that Christians celebrated the resurrection of Christ long before the word “Easter” was used and the word they used for the celebration was “Pascha,” which is derived from and linked to the Jewish festival of Passover. According to Bede, the English monastic historian, the English word Easter comes from the Anglo-Saxon name for the month of April, which was known as “Eostremonath” in the AngloSaxon tongue and since Pascha was most often celebrated in Eostremonath, the English Christians began calling it “Easter.” Bede also notes that the month was named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess Esostre. Rituals related to the goddess Eostre focus on new beginnings, symbolized by the Easter egg, and fertility, which is symbolized by the hare (or Easter bunny). April Fool’s DAy prAnks! In honor of April Fool’s Day, here are five fun and easy pranks to pull wherever you are, including some of our own and some we have rounded up for you: Prank your spouse or even your children during your morning routine. Ladies, tell your husband when he wakes up, “Happy Anniversary!” Groggily they will panic, not realizing what day it is until they fully wake up! Another classic prank is to switch the cereal bags and boxes around. Won’t your son or daughter be surprised when their Lucky Charms are actually Wheaties! If you’re stuck at the office, try unplugging your neighbor’s mouse while they have their back turned. It is something fast and easy that won’t risk any of the work they happen to be working on. On most computers, go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Mouse, and select the “Pointers” tab. Then change the cursor to the hourglass image. Now the victim will think their computer is stuck on a task endlessly. For those in school, scare a classmate with an unexpected test. As you are walking into the classroom, ask one of your classmates if they are, “ready for the test today?” Have a friend walk with you to confirm there is a test and watch them panic! Find a spool of thread that matches your shirt and hide it in your pocket. Leave a length of thread hanging out. Your victim will see it and try to pull it out. It will keep coming and coming! Try it while you are waiting in a line today or while you are running errands.

We are seeking a Co-Chair for the annual July 4th event. If you’re interested, please call Carole Fox at 281-693-1183 or email carolejeanfox@yahoo.com.
Happy Easter!
If you are hanging out with some friends, tell them you know a great trick. Put your hand palm-down on the table and balance a full glass of water on the back of your hand. Bet your friend that they can’t balance a glass on both hands at once, with your help to put them in place. As soon as you have the glasses balanced, stand up and walk away. They will be trapped and will have to spill the water to escape. Let the others in your group know beforehand so they can go along with it!

KEEP YOUR PEts On LEashEs It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard) must be on a leash. For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
stOP that BaRKing! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.
gRand LaKEs dOg PaRK Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

The more people who know about it the easier it is to reunite pets with their owners. If you have lost or found a pet call her at: 281-392-5792. If there is no answer, please leave a message. This service expedites the reunion of pets and their owners. If you’ve found a pet, you must be willing to hold on to it until an email alert is sent and the owner has time to come forward. There are many new residents unfamiliar with this service. Please spread the word to your new neighbors to get on the alert list. This is all about neighbors helping neighbors. Please write GrandLakes4Pets@ aol.com for more information and to get onto the mailing list. Many, many thanks to all the wonderful neighbor’s who’ve helped lost pets return to their homes.

PARKS, TOwN SquARE AND COMMON AREAS IN THE COMMuNITY In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.
NC GARDEN CLUB On April 5, 2012, Nottingham Country Garden Club will feature Jennie Dunnihoo. Ask Your Neighborhood PlANNer By Craig Narum CFP®, Grand Lakes resident
MAke A PlAN to reduce Your debt The recession - and subsequent slow recovery - has caused millions of Americans to focus even more closely on living within their means. If you are ready to face up to your own financial realities, one crucial step is to set out a plan of action. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind. Keep Track of Your Spending. It’s hard to reduce your spending if you don’t have a good idea of how much you are spending. Keep track of your typical monthly expenses for three months to find out where your money is going. To get an even more realistic idea, factor in some unexpected expenses - such as auto and home repairs. Once you have a record of your spending, compare your average monthly outlay with your monthly income. If you have a surplus, this is the amount you can apply each month to paying down debt and building savings. If you have a shortfall, you’ll need to examine your expenses more closely to see what you can potentially cut back or cut out. Keep Saving. One way to establish good saving habits is to make saving even easier than spending. A handy tip is to set up separate savings accounts with separate goals attached to them. Here are three suggestions that can help you better allocate your savings … (1) Emergency Account: Your goal for this account should be to build up at least three to six months of living expenses. This way, if you lose your job or need a lump sum to pay for a significant expense, you may not have to tap into your other savings or ring up more debt. (2) Family Account: This account can help fund your children’s school expenses (such as class trips and team uniforms) or vacations. (3) Investment Account: This account should be reserved for general or long-term saving goals. Hopefully, you already have a retirement savings account (either through your workplace or on your own) and perhaps a college savings plan. But having another account to save for other longer-term goals - maybe to start your own business or remodel your home - can be a smart move.

Keep a Tight Watch on Your Credit Cards. If you’ve accumulated significant credit card debt, you’ve first got to stop the bad behavior. Paying off debt is easier once you stop using your credit cards … (1) Pay off your highest interest credit card debt first, making sure you avoid the “minimum balance trap.” Paying more than the minimum can make a big difference. (2) Consolidate your debt by transferring outstanding balances to lower-rate cards. If you don’t want to transfer your balances, you may be able to get your current credit card company to match the interest rate of a competitor. (3) Cancel all cards except for the one that offers the lowest interest rate. (4) Finally, set up a realistic payment timetable and stick with it. If you have trouble keeping pace, talk to a professional. The counselors at the nonprofit National Foundation for Credit Counseling can help develop a more structured plan for you. To find the nearest location, call 800-388-2227 or visit www.nfcc.org.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.

trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering

Pack 209“Marked Men” Katy Boy Scout Troop 209 recently held an Eagle Scout Award Court of Honor ceremony to recognize Michael Gilbert, Ryan Goodwin and Ian Johnecheck for achieving Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. Each Scout individually completed the requirements for Eagle by demonstrating leadership skills and proficiency as well as by initiating and leading a community service project. Michael’s project benefited St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church’s Youth Program, Ryan’s project benefited The Katy Heritage Society and Ian’s project benefited the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition. The three began Scouting in 2000 as Tiger Cubs in Cub Scout Troop 925. Now as Eagle Scouts they have become “Marked Men” by assuming the solemn obligation to do their duty to God, to Country, to fellow Scouts and to Mankind in general. Graduating from high school in 2011, Michael currently attends Midwestern State University, Ryan attends the University of Arkansas and Ian attends the University of Oklahoma. Troop 209, sponsored by St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, was established in 1939 and since then 138 of its members have become Eagle Scouts. Only 4 in 100 Scouts will earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
Pictured L-R: Alex Trevino earned his 2nd Class and 1st Class rank, Daniel Rodriguez earned his 2nd class and 1st class rank, Christian Contreras earned his 1st class rank, Ashton Rocker earned his Life rank and Nick Christoffersen earned his Eagle.

Like Music? “You’ll Love Katy!” The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is scheduled for April 27 and 28, 2012. You will not want to miss this exciting weekend of music and art coming to Katy, Texas!
The purpose of the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is to increase exposure of jazz, to extend jazz education for developing musicians and to provide entertainment of the jazz music medium in the Katy and West Houston areas. The Festival’s activities are non-competitive and dedicated to the development and preservation of this truly American art form. The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is also a uniquely different event for jazz music patrons. All attendees have the opportunity to hear big bands and combos comprised of student jazz musicians throughout the day, as well as featured guitar artists and aspiring music groups, via the component known as the Katy Guitar Fest. Each day then can be completed by attending the Featured Concerts on Friday and Saturday nights by world-renown jazz recording artists. Throughout the day an exhibit of outstanding visual artwork, by area and national artists, known as ARTkaty is on display and provides the opportunity for attendees to view, enjoy, and purchase fine artwork of the highest quality. More information about the featured jazz artists, featured guitar artists, and visual artists can be found on the website: www.WestHoustonJazz.com. When you have reached the website, you can sign up for updates on the artists and latest information pertaining to the Festival and the professional artists! You can also follow the latest “buzz” about the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival on Facebook, a link to which can also be found on the website! Performance participation in the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is open to all student jazz ensembles (big bands and/or combos) at the middle school, junior high, high school and/or college levels. Performance and participation in the Katy Guitar Fest is encouraged for all guitarists of all ages and all genres of music. Registration forms for each of these components are available on the website: www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Student participating ensembles will receive professional constructive comments by renowned professional jazz artists after their performances, as well as participate in individualized instruction on their own musical instruments through “master classes” with the professional jazz artists. Topics and technical studies ranging from jazz interpretation to improvisation to composition and professional pathways in jazz are all included in the master classes. Festival attendees may attend any of the daily performances and art exhibit with the purchase of a daily admission wristband. Shuttle buses will be available, at no cost to Festival attendees, for transportation from the local Katy hotels (which offer reduced rates to Festival participants and attendees) to the Festival and return them to their original point of departure. Daily admission wristbands will be available at the entrance to the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby of the following Katy hotels located at the Katy Mills Mall area: Best Western Plus; Hilton Garden Inn; Springhill Suites, by Marriott and the Residence Inn, by Marriott. Admission to the evening Feature Concerts is by ticket only. Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Window of the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby areas of the Katy hotels noted above during the days of the Festival, or in advance from any Katy ISD high school band member, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music or online at www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Please visit the website to receive information pertaining to the dates for ticket sales at a later time. Proceeds from the Festival go to support the jazz education at Katy ISD high schools.

Rick McCool, along with his wife Shirley, have spear-headed the local “Hoop Shoot” for over 30 years, a number of which Rick has also served as District chair. This will be their final year to direct any “Hoop Shoot” activities since Rick has chosen to “retire.” Knowing Rick, he will still be available to help but he is turning the local and district chairs over to Dan Tass, along with the help of his wife Gail, to direct the winning tradition that has been set by Katy area youth and the Katy Elks Lodge.
Update For North Fort BeNd CoUNty
By Commissioner Andy meyers Reported crimes have decreased 7% in Fort Bend County and nearly 9% in the Katy/Fulshear area from 2010 to 2011, despite an increase in population. The crime rate has decreased each year for the last ten years resulting in Fort Bend County having the lowest crime rate of the ten largest Texas counties. An article in the Katy Section of the Houston Chronicle reported that crime in Katy/Cinco Ranch area, which is in both Harris and Fort Bend Counties, had increased. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office recently assigned 50 Deputies to the North County Annex located at the northeast corner of the Grand Parkway and the Westpark Toll Road. Building the Annex and locating the Sheriff’s Patrol Deputies in it will increase patrol time in the north part of the county by 10-15%, which helps decrease response times on complaints and reduce crime.
and will be about two months behind Phase I. The Project is funded mainly by TxDOT and the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority. The county will construct and operate a “Park and Ride” facility on property it owns on the north side of FM 1093/Westpark Toll Road between Mason Road and Grand Mission Drive. The “Park and Ride” is funded by a federal grant. It is scheduled to be completed by late summer 2013. Destinations from the “Park and Ride” will be to the Galleria Area, Greenway Plaza and the Medical Center. A continuous right turn lane from north FM 1463 to east Interstate 10 was completed in 2011 to reduce traffic congestion at that intersection. Further improvements to FM 1463, a state road, requires the federal government to approve and fund additional feeder lanes from FM 1463 east along I 10 and an overpass at the FM 1463/I 10 intersection. Such approval and funding is not anticipated for several years. To provide additional access to I 10, the county has been working with TxDOT, Waller County, city of Katy, and various property owners and developers to build the Cane Island Parkway from US 90 on the north to connect to FM 1463 on the south. Cane Island will include an overpass over I 10 about a mile west of the I-10 / FM 1463 intersection. This Project has been stalled by the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) insistence that the state and local governments provide full funding for the ultimate I 10 overpass, which is estimated to cost $30 million. Another proposal has been made to FHWA for approval of a two-lane overpass over I 10. We currently await a response from FHWA.
The two direct connectors at SH 99 and Interstate 10 are now open, significantly reducing traffic congestion at that intersection. TxDOT has begun construction of Segment “E” of the Grand Parkway from Interstate 10 to SH 290. Fort Bend County has begun construction of the first two of ten Grand Parkway overpasses in the portion of Segment “D” from FM 1093 to US 59. Construction of all ten overpasses and of Segment “E” should be completed by year end 2013.
Fort Bend County’s North Annex at 22333 Grand Corner Drive Katy, Texas 77494, is open to serve the community. Offices in the Annex include Commissioner Precinct 3 Andy Meyers, 281-238-1400; Tax office, 281-238-1490; County Clerk office, 281-341-8685; Justice of Peace Precinct 3 - Ken Cannata, 281-238-1460, Constable Precinct 3 - Rob Cook, 281-238-1430; Sheriff Milton Wright office, 281-341-8745; Health & Human Services office, 281-238-3233; and Veterans’ office, 281-238-1480.
Fort Bend County has begun engineering design on the extension of the FM 1093/Westpark Toll Road. The Project is in two Phases. Phase I consists of four lanes of FM 1093 frontage road from SH 99 to FM 1463, four lanes of main toll lanes from SH 99 to Spring Green Road, and a direct connector east FM 1093 to north SH 99. Construction of Phase I is slated to begin the fall of 2012 and will take 18-24 months. Phase II of the Project consists of four lanes of FM 1093 frontage road from FM 1463 to James Lane in Fulshear

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also:

Did you know there is a support group for the Gifted and Talented Program in KISD? The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district.
