GRaND Lakes NeWs When one door closes, another opens. It’s difficult to accept this, but it is true. Recently, my volunteer career with DePelchin Children’s Center ended abruptly and without reason. I dedicated almost three years of love, care and compassion to children who were abandoned and left for nothing. These children were my world. When I was told to never return again (without any explanation as to why), I was devastated. I felt my children were feeling “Ms. Monica left us the same way our parents and families left us. I had coordinated: a Bollywood dance performance for an international program for the kids, Thanksgiving and Easter cupcake parties, back to school pizza party, Winter Wonderland pizza party with food donated by local businesses, plus a moonwalk the kids were thrilled to enjoy, numerous gifts for the children for accomplishing improvements in behaviors and academics, a gardening project and so much more. Plus, we had given a generous gift of money, which was used to make the kids’ living quarters safer. All of this and not to mention hundreds of hours of volunteer time and dedication - all thrown away without any explanation. I decided that I am going to take action. I opened up our very own newsletter and found Crossroads. Now, I look forward to a new beginning with a, hopefully, new organization that loves children who need a good role model, as much as I do. I hope my story helps you. Email: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com to share your thoughts.

ORGaNIzING GRaND Lakes COmmUNIty emeRGeNCy RespONse team (CeRt) The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Have you been trained as a CERT member? GRAND LAKES POOL TAGS Everyone should have received the “2012” stickers for your pool tags. As stated in a letter sent last year, when the tags were mailed out in 2011, the current tags will be used for three years, with the addition of date stickers for the current year. This saves the association considerable money, so hold onto your tags.

Enhanced lighting is a quick, inexpensive and effective way of making your home less attractive to criminals. Lights on photocells are a good option, as they come on whenever it gets dark. Some people prefer motion sensors, but whatever you choose, assess your home for the best options and be sure to avoid adding lights that will shine in your neighbor’s windows. If you decide to add exterior fixtures, you first need to submit an Architectural Review application. The form is on the website. In future issues, we will offer more tips to avoid being a crime victim. please send to mjmeagher@pcmi-us.com if you have a suggestion.

EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in Grand Lakes, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Stop that Barking! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

pet LoSt and FoUnd SerViCe For grand LakeS GL resident Lisa Lambert has been providing this service since 2002 with great success. The more people who know about it the easier it is to reunite pets with their owners. If you have lost or found a pet call her at: 281-392-5792. If there is no answer, please leave a message. This service expedites the reunion of pets and their owners. If you’ve found a pet, you must be willing to hold on to it until an email alert is sent and the owner has time to come forward. There are many new residents unfamiliar with this service. Please spread the word to your new neighbors to get on the alert list. This is all about neighbors helping neighbors. Please write GrandLakes4Pets@aol.com for more information and to get onto the mailing list. Many, many thanks to all the wonderful neighbor’s who’ve helped lost pets return to their homes. 5 steps to a happier healthier pet 1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet.

“Unleash OUr hearts” The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is seeking partners across the country for donations in rebuilding their facility, which was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. The Katy community was overwhelmingly instrumental in supporting families that were displaced after Hurricane Katrina through the support of Katy ISD, local businesses, various community organizations and churches. We are, once again, given the opportunity to “unleash our hearts” and be a part of the rebuilding of Louisiana SPCA. The website www.la-spca.org provides information regarding the Come Stay Heal Capital Campaign. Donations can be made online or checks made payable to Louisiana SPCA Capital Campaign, 701 Thayer Street, New Orleans, LA 70114. For questions and comments, please contact: Laura Maloney, Chief Executive Officer Louisiana SPCA, 701 Thayer St., New Orleans, LA 70114, PH: 504-368-5191, ext. 200, laura@la-spca.org (email). avoid using credit cards or bank loans to finance the debt. Perhaps the only positive aspect of medical debt is that health care professionals rarely report payment information to credit monitoring bureaus unless the debt has been passed off to a collection agency. On the other hand, credit card and installment loan data is routinely reported. So the wiser strategy may be to deal directly with the doctor or hospital to work out a payment plan, especially if you are concerned about maintaining a healthy credit score.

Medical bills typically arrive long after the service was rendered and they are notoriously complex, including multiple line items for physician time, laboratory tests, radiology, etc. Take time when the bills arrive to read through them and make sure you agree not only with the services performed but also the details of how much coverage is provided by your health insurance. tap your emergency fund. CLASS OF 2012 SOS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Spartans Out Serving is a student volunteer organization founded by parents in 2005. This organization strives to educate, empower and inspire the student members to volunteer and serve others. The members learn selflessness and community awareness as they make a positive impact on the community. During the past year, over 1,200 members reported 30,500 community service hours. They have volunteered here at school, throughout Katy and the Houston area, the United States and around the world. This year 139 Senior SOS members completed the requirements to wear a white community service cord at graduation. Each of these students will receive a $1,000 to use towards their education after graduation: Kimberley Argarwal, Kenzie Buchanan, Natalie Chen, Rachel Fallin, Matthew Williamson, Nicole Yost and Jane Weber. Natalie Chen served 535 hours during her time in Spartans Out Serving (SOS). Natalie’s most meaningful volunteer experience was working with children at the Chinese Community Center in Houston through their summer youth Program. She plans to continue to volunteer when she begins her journey at UT Austin. Rachel Fallin served 275 hours during her time in SOS. Community Service changed her life when she became a camera operator at Second Baptist church and she knew she wanted to major in radio, television and film studies in college. The impact of one testimony videotaped and seen by thousands was profound. Jane Weber served 401 hours during her time in SOS. Jane has volunteered in various activities with a focus on working with children and giving them a good role model, especially with the DARE and Power organizations. From that experience Jane plans to become a teacher and a mother. Matthew Williamson served 165.5 hours during his time in SOS. His most meaningful volunteer experience was on mission trip to Nicaragua in 2011 when he worked with the House of Hope organization. Through volunteering, Matthew has become aware of the pain and suffering in the world and plans to continue volunteering wherever he may go. Kenzie Buchanan served 287.6 hours during her time in SOS. The most meaningful volunteer experience was when she went to New Orleans for a week mission with her family in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Kenzie has come to love serving others and finding joy in being able to help out the community. Kimberly “Komal” Agarwal served 154.5 hours during her time in SOS. Komal’s most memorable volunteer experience was at Katy Visual and Performing Art Center as a teacher’s assistant while using her artistic skills. Nicole Yost served 498 hours during her time in SOS. The most meaningful experience Nikki had was building a ramp for a wheelchair bound man through UM Army. She learned skills to be a well-equipped independent homeowner one day as well as touching the life of someone who was prisoner in his own home. Nikki plans to continue contributing to her community wherever she goes.

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION CHANGES FOR 2012 - 2013

First full month!

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a change in the eligibility requirements for students to receive transportation services. Starting in August 2012, the eligibility for bus transportation will change from the current 3/10 of a mile to approximately 1/2 mile for elementary students and approximately one mile for junior high and high school students. Bus transportation will continue to be provided for students for whom a hazardous condition may exist between home and school, as well as special needs bus routes.

“Our customer-oriented services and staff aim to offer you the services you need.”

Approximately 52 bus routes (elementary and secondary) will be eliminated, affecting approximately 6,600 students or nearly 21% of the 32,000 students that ride school buses daily. The Katy ISD Transportation Department began building bus routes in June and will have specific routing information available for parents sometime in August. The district will announce specific dates once they become available.

Estate l a e R r u o Y or Life! Resource f The changes are the result of the Transportation Department experiencing particular challenges this year in having a sufficient number of drivers available to meet daily transportation route requirements. Due to vacant routes and driver absences, there have been days in which the department has found it necessary to find drivers to cover up to 46 routes. These changes will allow the district to better meet route driver needs and will provide for more effective route management, including driver training and driver support in issues involving student management. “The change in transportation services comes after extensive review of our current transportation operations that not only revealed a heavy burden for drivers covering multiple routes, but also a high amount of uncertainty and risk due to vacant routes and driver absences,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “In comparison to other school districts, Katy ISD’s transportation eligibility distances remain among the shortest in the Houston area as many districts require students to live outside of a two mile radius.”

In Texas, high school bowling began as a club sport in 2001 with the formation of the Texas High School Bowling Club Program. In its inaugural year, there were only 5 districts, 25 schools and 13 centers that participated in the program. Today, those numbers have grown to include 75 districts, 177 schools and 53 centers across the state. However, despite the rapid growth of high school bowling in Texas, it has never been adopted by the Texas U.I.L. to be recognized as a high school sport. On June 12th two Houston area high school bowlers, Keith Gardner (Katy ISD) and Dominick Savage (Ft. Bend ISD), traveled to Austin to appear before the Texas U.I.L. Legislative Committee at their Annual Policy Meeting to make a proposal that bowling be added as an U.I.L. athletic sport in high schools across the state. They prepared a presentation and were given only five minutes to speak to the committee members, which was comprised of district Superintendents from throughout Texas. Having only a limited amount of time to present their topic, Keith and Dominick focused on some of the highlights about high school bowling. At the end of their presentation, members of the Legislative Committee commended Keith and Dominick on making such a great presentation and asked several questions, such as how many students are on each of their bowling teams; which areas currently have the most concentration of high school bowlers; how much are they currently paying for a participation fee and what are there averages, to name just a few. Each committee member was provided with a copy of Keith and Dominick’s presentation along with a brochure from USBC, which discusses a little more about High School bowling. Karen Miller, the Executive Director of the Texas Bowling Centers Association, had also filed a proposal with the Texas U.I.L. to add bowling as a new U.I.L. sport and was also in attendance at the meeting as a representative of the Texas High School Bowling Club. She provided additional information to the Committee in response to some of the questions that were being asked of the youth bowlers. The Texas U.I.L. Legislative Committee will reconvene in October and will vote at that time whether or not to pass bowling as a new U.I.L. sport. Let’s hope this will be the year. It’s been 75 years and it’s about time bowling gets state athletic association recognition in Texas.
