GRAND LAKES WINTER FESTIVAL DECEMBER 7 TH! Mark your calendars for our community’s Christmas Celebration December 7th, 4 PM to 6 PM. Snow, refreshments, activities for kiddos and the whole family! Be sure to bring your cameras for pictures! For more information, log on to grandlakeslife.com.
GRAND LAKES NEWS I think I can, I think I can and I did! Recently, I ran a 5K at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, inspired by my bestie. I formed a team for her and her fight and more than $2,200 later, with a big team of over 20 members, we did it! Now, the hard part - training for my first half marathon. There are many naysayers: “Why are you doing this? Do you wish to get hurt? You’re going to get too skinny. Why are you doing this?” I’m sure you get the point by now. The best response to anyone who casts doubts on your unconventional tastes
and interest is, “join me and let’s discover this together.” With the holiday season in full swing, be sure to remember the true meaning of our special days. It’s all about giving the gift of time. Volunteer, roll up your sleeves and go to a soup kitchen, clean up your house of worship, donate magazines to a local senior living center or simply spread His word of caring and sharing. It’s amazing what happens when you take the focus off of you and dedicate your focus to His word. Happy holidays to ALL! Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.
GRAND LAKES NEEDS CHAIRPERSONS! We need chairpersons and co-chairs for the following committees: • Grand Lakes Woman’s Association • Grand Lakes Kids’ Playgroup These are very popular and important committees, which bring together your neighbors and friends. If you want to chair any of these groups, contact Sherita Jeter at PCMI (281-870-0585 or sjeter@stes.com).
YOUR HEALTH NOW! FITNESS FRENZY WHEN IT’S FREEZING! Oh joy! It is going to get cooler outside and this means we’re not going to want to get out and about as much. Instead we will be keeping warm by staying indoors, surrounded by all the holiday goodnesses: TV, family and FOOD. But you CAN be fit even when it’s freezing! Here’s how to beat the winter fitness blues: • Change your mind - a new season is about a new YOU vs. new weather. Revisit your goals and get ‘em!

Try something new - a new activity for about a month will add pizazz to your routine and new friends too! • Set big AND little goals - if the colder months leave you unmotivated, set an achievable goal. For example, train for a 5K and your little goals include increasing your run time by 3 minutes each week. • Get excited, get ENERGIZED! HOLIDAY SHOPPING SAFETY! We’re going to be out and about and this means our focus and attention are compromised. Be sure to put safety as your #1 wish item on your holiday shopping list. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind: • Do not buy more than you can carry. • Save all receipts. • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. • Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. • Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in. • Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or if possible, take them directly home. • If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you are separated from each other. • Select a central meeting place. • Teach kiddos to know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help. • Before surfing the Internet, secure your personal computers by updating your security software. • Keep your personal information private and your password secure. Do not respond to requests to “verify” your password or credit card information unless you initiated the contact. • Beware of “bargains” from companies with whom you are unfamiliar. • Use secure websites for purchases. Look for the icon of a locked padlock at the bottom of the screen or “https” in the URL address. • Shop with companies you know and trust.

Grand Lakes Announcements WELCOME TO GRAND LAKES! GRAND LAKES EMAIL GROUP
PET POOPS/YOU SCOOP When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!
KEEP YOUR PETS ON LEASHES
If you are not in the community email group, go to www. grandlakeslife.com and click “Join Our Mailing List” to add as many email addresses as you like. We do not share these addresses with anyone for any reason. Messages are sent only a couple times a month with items of interest to the community.
For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can and immediately email the Grand Lakes Pets Lost and Found: grandlakes4pets@aol.com
GRAND LAKES PET LOST & FOUND
STOP THAT BARKING!
Do you have pets, love animals and want to help your neighbors who have pets? Grand Lakes has a Pet Lost & Found service which helps reunite lost or found pets with their families. To receive pet “amber” alerts, please email Lisa at grandlakes4pets@aol.com and ask to be added to her list. If you ever find a lost pet or lose one of your own you’ll be glad to have this service at your fingertips. Please see more information on page (last page) and in the “Helpful Numbers for Grand Lakes” page in the back.

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate.

• Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.
GRAND LAKES DOG PARK Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET 1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please go to txlabrescue.org to check out their website.
GRAND LAKES COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) AND HAM RADIO VOLUNTEERS The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, like fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

PARKS, TOWN SQUARE AND COMMON AREAS IN THE COMMUNITY In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful. Beginning in 2014, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will greatly expand the health care benefits for the millions of Americans with no health coverage or who are underinsured. The ACA has identified 10 “essential health benefits,” which must be covered by non-grandfathered health plans. Even those with “full” insurance are expected to benefit from the act, as only 2% of insurers currently provide all 10, but more are expected to expand their coverage. The 10 essential benefits are: (1) Ambulatory patient services, also known as outpatient care. However, details about the plans networks and access to doctors will vary on a state-bystate basis … (2) Emergency services. Emergency room visits will no longer require preauthorization and you can no longer be charged for going out of network … (3) Hospitalization. Your insurer must cover your hospitalization, although you could be required to pay up to 20% of the bill if you haven’t reached your out-of-pocket limit … (4) Maternity and newborn care. Insurers will now have to provide prenatal care, childbirth and care for the newborn infants as part of their standard coverage … (5) Mental health and substance use disorder services. Many plans do not currently cover these services. In some states, coverage may be limited to a certain number of visits … (6) Prescription drugs. All individual and smallgroup plans will cover at least one drug in every category and class in the United States Pharmacopeia. Drugs will also be counted toward your annual out-of-pocket maximum limits … (7) Rehabilitative and habilitative services. The law is a boon to those with chronic diseases, who will now be covered for therapies to help them overcome their long-term disabilities. It also requires the coverage of rehab therapies, as well as medical equipment, such as walkers and wheelchairs … (8) Laboratory services. This includes prostate exams and Pap smears. You can still be billed for partial costs of diagnostic lab tests, as well as more extensive screenings, such as an MRI … (9) Preventive and wellness services. The law requires insurers to cover all of the 50 preventive services recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force at no extra cost. Those services include diabetes screening, high blood pressure screening, mammograms and colorectal cancer screening … (10) Pediatric services, including oral and vision care. Dental and vision care is considered an essential benefit for children aged 18 and younger whose parents or guardians get insurance through the individual or small-group plans. Additionally, most plans - obtained through an employer or on the marketplace - cannot deny coverage or charge more because of a pre-existing health condition. Out-of-Pocket Spending Limits Delayed on Some Plans. The amount of money people will have to pay out-of-pocket each year for medical and prescription drug costs will be capped at $6,350 for individuals and $12,700 for a family. But these limits will not be in effect until 2015 for plans that use more than one service provider to give insurers and employers more time to comply.

HIGH ...SISTER SCHOOL BREAKFAST Sister Schools Katy Junior High and Beckendorff Junior High schools recently held a lunch, catered by Hasta La Pasta and HEB, to kick off the school year and discuss an up and coming service project that they will complete together. The sister school program creates a unique partnership in which we pool resources, talents and exchange ideas to help each others campus in the area’s of need.
BECKENDORFF JR. HIGH BEAR BUDDIES KICKOFF! Beckendorff Jr. High hosted its first Bear Buddies meeting with student volunteers to kick off the school year! The Bear Buddies program pairs special needs students with general education students in an effort to encourage more socialization between the two groups. This is done via one-on-one visits and social gatherings throughout the school year. The goal of the program is to educate, via disability awareness training and to foster acceptance and understanding which leads to valued friendships being formed. They also strive to bring education and awareness to the student body by participating in a school-wide Jeans for Genes Day and a “Spread the Word the End the Word” campaign. The program currently has over 140 general education students who signed up to participate. This summer, twenty-six students from Seven Lakes High School flew to Anaheim, California to compete in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Competition. FBLA is an organization, which helps prepare students for success in business careers. This club offers competition at a district, state and national level. There were over 10,000 members of FBLA from all around the nation in Anaheim, all striving to place in their event. Students competed at the national level after succeeding in the district and state competitions. However, competing was not the only reason these students went to Anaheim. As part of team building, they explored the Anaheim area and visited places such as Disneyland and Catalina Island. They also attended workshops, which helped them gain knowledge about business and leadership skills. Seven Lakes acquired a FBLA school record of seven winners: placing third in the nation was Shreetika Singh in Impromptu Speaking; Charani Kamath placed seventh in Health Care Administration; Zhining Chen placed ninth in Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure; Melissa Fu placed ninth in Business Math; Keerthana Chakka placed ninth in Word Processing and Vinamra Prakash and Nalin Chauhan placed ninth in Business Financial Plan. Other members attending from Seven Lakes included Prateek Mahajan, Meera Deverajan, Saideepthi Anandamala, Monica Su, Prasanna Tamminayana, Pranay Tamminayana, James Kurian, Rahul Sirigiri, William Tran, Adam Girgis, Shruti Khandekar, Jenny Kim, Vidita Dixit, Bobi Simonsen, Deepika Narayanan, Alice Liu, Diana Xu, Divya Abraham and Manmitha Guandampalli.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS) Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.

ard Fields, P.E. as the speaker for our January monthly program. In January 2013, three counties came together to form the Highway 36A Coalition, an advocacy group dedicated to developing free-flowing transportation facilities in southern Brazoria, western Fort Bend and Waller Counties. The general route for this corridor begins at Port Freeport and ends at SH 6 north of Hempstead, following existing SH 36 south of Rosenberg. The route is undefined across western Fort Bend County and follows the “Prairie Parkway” according to the Waller County thoroughfare plan north of IH 10, which crosses the Katy Prairie Conservancy. If you are not aware of the efforts of the Highway 36A Coalition currently we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to learn what their proposal entails, what their concerns are. This program will take place on Thursday, January 9th, at 7 PM. The meeting will be preceded by a social time and snacks at 6:30 PM and will be held at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center located at 1330 Band Road, Rosenberg, 77471. of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
RUOK PROGRAM
RECYCLE AT THE FT. BEND COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER!
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up
The Ft. Bend County Recycling center is located nearby in Rosenberg (just 10 miles away) and accepts glass/bottles and Styrofoam that Waste Management doesn’t pick up. Visit the Ft. Bend Co. government website for information: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us. Grand Lakes

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
