and people around the world observe different traditions and ways of sacrificing. This leads to an interesting thought: if you can sacrifice one thing each day, what would it be? The key to coming up with an answer is to think in simple terms. For today’s ever so technology driven, smart phone addicted society, I suggest: one hour no cell phone screen time. I asked my students one time to try and sacrifice an hour of screen time for something more productive. Again, the proposal was just one hour, 60 minutes. One hour. The response: “I can’t!” Where there is a will, there is a way. Be good to yourself, my neighbors. Questions, comments: email – monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY - 24/7, 365 Valentine’s Day is just one day on February 14th. Why not make it Valentine’s Day each and every day by making those you love feel extra special, including yourself. Here’s how: 1. Create & share a vision of your dream life together. Make the fulfillment of your short term and long term needs the criteria for choosing a partner and being in a relationship. 2. Accept your partner just as they are. Your partner is a special person - the only one in the world like them, with their own wonderful traits and unique gifts. They are entitled to their own decisions, hobbies, goals and hopes. 3. Be generous and loving in all your dealings with your partner. Give unconditionally, rather than wanting something back in return. Instead, commit 100% to doing things for your partner and with zero expectation.

4. Always have integrity. Commit to tell your partner the total truth, as honesty is one of the key things people want in a relationship. Knowing they can trust you builds a zone of safety and comfort around them. 5. Resolve your differences as soon as they happen. Conflict actually fuels a genuinely passionate partnership. So accept responsibility for your part of the issue at stake and do not blame your partner. 6. Do not criticize. It is ok to complain but not criticize. Your partner is doing the best they can – support them in becoming an even better person. NEVER put your partner down in front of other people. 7. Create a haven for your partner. Make them feel so safe and secure with you that they drop all their defensiveness. Be considerate of your partner’s feelings and treat them with the utmost care and kindness. 8. Let go of the past. All relationships have their difficulties. Remember only the lessons learnt and forget the details. Weather the stormy moments and savor the memory of sunny days. 9. Have a fun date with your partner regularly and often. Give the relationship the same commitment you made when you first met - simply put each other first! Courtesy: lifehack.org

CHINESE NEW YEAR FEBRUARY 8 TH! An estimated 1.4 billion people around the world will be celebrating the New Year on February 8, 2016.
INTERIOR & EXTERIOR
Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, starts on the night of the second new moon of the winter solstice and ends 15 days later on the night of the full moon. During Chinese New Year, families gather to enjoy delicious foods and to wish each other good luck in the year ahead. Children are often given red envelopes filled with coins, though the money inside is not as important as the color and symbol found on the envelopes, which signifies happiness and good blessings.
custompaintinghouston.com
Each year, the New Year celebration is associated with an astrological animal. 2016 is the year of the Red Monkey, also known as the Fire Monkey. People born in the year of the Monkey are said to be wise, intelligent, confident, charismatic, loyal, inventive and have leadership, according to Your Chinese Astrology. BEST SUPER BOWL PARTY EVER!!
MARDI GRAS 2016!
MARDI GRAS FUN FACTS: WOULD YOU BELIEVE?
Impress your guests by hosting the best super bowl party this year on February 7th. Here are some FOOD tips that may TRIM the waistline on this traditionally food fest football fun-day: 1. Create a Food Free space: Keeping snacks in another room will help everyone save calories. Plus not having the bowl of chips in front of the TV will curb mindless eating. 2. Low-cal foods first: Instead of bringing out the chicken wings right away, offer lower-calorie foods during the first half of the game, such as a spread of fresh veggies and a lightened-up dip. 3. Give classic recipes a healthy twist: Use nonfat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for dips. Cook Buffalo-marinated chicken tenders instead of chicken wings: you’ll still get that finger-licking yumminess while slashing your intake of saturated fat and sodium. And skip the local pizza delivery; instead, set up stations for everyone to make his/her own healthier and tastier pizza at home. 4. Downsize your dishes. Downsize serving bowls from large to medium. Serve up the tortilla chips in a medium bowl rather than a large one. Same goes for the guacamole: serve that in a small bowl. 5. Be drink aware: choose taller skinny glasses instead of short wide ones. Bigger tip: serve only what your kiddo can enjoy! Courtesy: eatinwell.com

• More than 500,000 king cakes are sold each year in New Orleans between January 6th and Fat Tuesday and another 50,000 are shipped out-of-state
via overnight courier. • The king cakes include a tiny plastic baby doll inside; the person who finds the doll is declared “king” and must buy the next cake or give the next party. • The metro area’s 37,000-plus hotel rooms are traditionally 95% filled during Mardi Gras weekend. • An economic impact study released by the University of New Orleans estimates that Mardi Gras generates over $840 million annually. • The largest of about one dozen Mardi Gras supply houses in New Orleans sells an estimated one billion pairs of beads for a Mardi Gras season. • The super parades of Endymion and Bacchus, scheduled for the Saturday and Sunday before Fat Tuesday, feature a combined total of 67 floats, 60 marching bands and more than 250 units. Their 4,200 members toss more than 1.5 million cups, 2.5 million doubloons and millions of beads. • One of the most photographed objects in all of Mardi Gras is the Boeuf Gras float in the Rex parade. Since the Middle Ages, the bouef gras (fatted bull) has been the symbol of the last meat eaten before Lent. While once a live bull was included in the procession, now a huge papier-mache’ figure appears.

5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

BY CRAIG NARUM CFP®, GRAND LAKES RESIDENT
COMMON ESTATE PLANNING MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM Estate planning can be a minefield of potential missteps, some of which could have far-reaching consequences. Many of the poor choices individuals make when planning for their own future or passing assets to their families are caused by “onesize-fits-all” planning strategies or well-intended advice from family or friends. Following are some common and potentially costly mistakes along with suggestions for avoiding them. Failing to plan. Whether drafting a basic will or crafting an elaborate strategy involving trusts and tax planning, an estate plan can help reduce estate taxes, save on estate administrative costs and specify how your assets are to be distributed. Today, the majority of Americans have no will. If you die without one, your estate will be divided according to the intestacy laws of your state - not according to your wishes. This could create problems if your intended beneficiary is a minor child, a child with special needs, a favorite charity or a combination of the above. In these cases, you need a will that details each contingency and a trust or multiple trusts to accomplish your goals. Not maximizing your marital estate exemptions. Perhaps one of the most important pieces of tax legislation passed recently is referred to as the “portability” provision. This means that if one spouse dies without using up his or her federal estate tax exemption - $5.43 million in 2015 - the unused portion may be transferred to the surviving spouse without incurring any federal estate tax. How might the portability provision work in a real life situation? Consider the following scenario involving the hypothetical $8 million estate of Jim and Helen: If Jim dies in 2015, the executor of his estate can elect to use the unlimited spousal exemption and can also transfer Jim’s unused $5.43 million federal estate tax exemption to Helen. If Helen dies in 2015 with $8 million in assets, her estate will have a total of $10.86 million in federal estate-tax exemptions: the $5.43 million exclusion transferred from Jim and her own $5.43 million exclusion. As a result, none of Jim and Helen’s $8 million estate would be subject to federal estate tax. As welcome as the portability provision may be, it still does not account for future appreciation of assets from the first spouse’s estate. Nor does portability offer protection from creditors and others aiming to lay claim on an estate’s assets.

Traditional strategies like credit shelter trusts and bypass trusts do provide these benefits and therefore are still essential planning instruments for married couples.
probate issues. A specialist will have more experience and skill in his/her chosen area - and that will translate into higher quality services provided in the most cost effective manner.
Naming a family member as executor. Your executor is the person who will be responsible for administering your estate after death. The responsibilities of an executor are serious and you will want someone who will take them seriously. There are many important reasons to choose a paid executor - a bank or trust company, for instance - along with (or instead of) a spouse or family member. A professional executor is familiar with the probate process and may actually save the family money, keeping expenses under control. This will undoubtedly be an emotional time for your loved ones and a family member may find it difficult to focus on the details involved with settling an estate. In addition, when you name a family member, especially a beneficiary as executor, you introduce the potential for conflict of interest. The larger the estate, the more likely those conflicts become.
No set of rules or advice can apply in all cases, but a sure way to avoid these and other problems is to rely on a trusted team of tax and legal professionals led by your financial advisor. This communication is not intended to be tax and/or legal advice and should not be treated as such. Each individual’s situation is different. You should contact your tax/legal professional to discuss your personal situation. Please email questions/comments to craig@trisperity.com.
Relying on advice from family or friends. Would you go to a friend or relative for surgery or to fix your car if he or she was not a skilled surgeon or auto mechanic? Why would you take their advice about estate planning issues if they are not professional planners? When seeking a professional, look for a specialist - someone who knows trusts, estate tax law and

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law.

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

First Baptist Academy’s Matthew Bradberry, Kevin Beck-Perez and Pierce Donalson.
FBA STUDENT MAKES FIRST CHAIR TROMBONE AT ALL-STATE First Baptist Academy’s Kevin BeckPerez was selected as the first chair trombone student at this year’s 2015 All-State middle school band competition hosted by the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB). Auditions were held on November 7, 2015 at Sealy High School. Students selected to be in the honor band attended an all-day clinic followed by a concert the following Saturday in Bellville, Texas. Seventh grader Beck-Perez, as well as alto saxophone players Matthew Bradberry, 8th grade and Pierce Donalson, 7th grade, chose to participate in the audition which required hours of practice despite their rigorous class and homework schedules in the two weeks prior to the audition. The competition began with blind auditions. Students individually played prepared music that consisted of several scales and excerpts from two music selections for three to four judges in a closed room. Students were scored, ranked and subsequently selected to play in the region band for the following weekend based on their audition performance. In the alto saxophone section, Bradberry ranked 15th and Donalson ranked 29th out of forty-one students auditioning for five spots. Beck-Perez ranked first out of fifteen students who auditioned for ten trombone spots.

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES 2016-2017 ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY MODIFICATION
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve an attendance boundary modification (ABM) designed to address the opening of three new campuses and alleviate overcrowding at campuses landlocked with 125 percent capacity. This ABM will provide much-needed relief to Rylander and West Memorial elementary schools, as well as, balance enrollment as the District prepares to open two elementary schools and one junior high next school year. During this entire process, the District welcomed feedback from the community through an online survey. Nearly 9,000 parents, staff and community members completed the survey and dozens shared their feedback during the open forum at various Board meetings. These comments helped shape the ABM and addressed major needs and concerns cited by parents and community. Grand Lakes

The Board approved the updated ABM option on December 14th. The District estimates that approximately 3,600 students will be impacted by the approved attendance boundary modifications. Katy ISD will be notifying all impacted families in January/February 2016. For more information about the ABM process, including maps of the approved attendance boundary modifications, visit the District’s ABM webpage.

COMMUNITY INVITED TO SUPPORT TEACHER GRANTS
The Katy ISD Education Foundation is inviting parents, businesses and community members to contribute to its teacher grant initiative by becoming a Foundation Investor or making a one-time donation. The Foundation’s annual Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program awards funds to teachers to implement classroom projects that engage and excite Katy ISD students. Formed in 2013 to support creative classroom programs in Katy ISD schools, the Foundation has awarded more than $500,000 to teachers throughout the district, enriching the learning experience for more than 65,000 Katy ISD students. Each spring, teachers are invited to apply for a grant through a competitive, three-step evaluation process. Submissions are judged by community volunteers. This year’s grant application process launched in November with teacher grant applications due March 30, 2016. Grants will be awarded in May 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. Foundation Investors pledge annual gifts that range from $1,000 to $50,000 per year. One-time contributions of any amount are also welcome. Additional information about

Katy High School’s Head Football Coach Gary Joseph, was recently selected as a 2016 inductee into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Coach Joseph, along with eight other inductees, were announced on Saturday, December 19th at NRG Stadium. Coach Joseph began his coaching career at Luling High School 37 years ago. After advancing in jobs at Brazosport and Austin Westlake, he then moved to Katy High School, where he has served for 33 years. He was the KHS defensive coordinator and then assistant head coach for 22 years before becoming the KHS head coach in 2004. During his tenure as head coach, he has led the Katy Tigers to eight state final games with three of those appearances resulting in 6A State Championships. His current coaching record stands at 167-14. While individual and team accolades are greatly appreciated and honored, Coach Joseph also strives to build a strong group of student athletes who recognize, through the actions of their head coach, the necessity for integrity, loyalty and the value of leading oneself and others through life’s victories with humility and hardships with grace. The induction banquet will be held on May 7, 2016 in Waco, Texas.
