GRAND LAKES NEWS New Year. New YOU! Happy New Year, neighbors! We will still have a few days remaining in 2013 by the time you get this newsletter, so spend those few days reflecting. How did you grow? What did you gain? What did you lose? What was your biggest achievement? What could you have done better? If you ask me, I reflected upon 2013 each day this year, every 365 days of it. Each day was a way for me to do something better. I made many changes within myself so that I may enjoy the beauty within others. We have to let go of many things in order to gain that one big thing. My biggest gain was my closeness to my faith. What a fascinating journey it has been as I studied His word, lived it and shared it. I am sure you all have a great story to share as well! Have a wonderful 2014! Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

Here we are - 2014! How did you do in 2013? Chances are, you did your best! And this year, you’re doing to do even better. Like millions of Americans, you will make some resolutions. This time around, set GOALS! Check out some reasonable goals for your new year: • Do something totally different related to fitness - join a class of some kind, get into a sport, start an exercise group. • Make a list of non-negotiables - make a list of must-do’s and stick with it. I must exercise today. I must eat at least 3-5 servings of fruits/vegetables today. I must stop texting and driving. • Go on vacation - Promise yourself a getaway at least 2x this year! • Volunteer and do something great - this is the easiest goal to achieve. Who doesn’t like to help others? • Learn something new - go back to school, take a course, learn a skill or change your career.

IMPROVE YOUR FINANCES

• Cabinet Painting • Sheetrock Repair & Texturing

With proper training, anyone can go from walking to running. Here is a sample 8 week plan for your first 10K. Please note: be sure to stretch for at least a full 5 minutes or 10 minutes (ideal) before your run and contact your physician for any concerns:

www.krenekprinting.com HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. Each year a fundamental question arises. Young people especially want to know, “Why do we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?” The following is a brief analysis of the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior’s vision and what he did to change America and the world forever: After World War II, many more people felt that new laws were needed in efforts to give African Americans their rights. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that blacks and whites could go to the same schools, saying that “separate but equal” schools were inherently unequal. However, many people still did not want to change. It took a strong leader, a person who believed in peace and justice, to win more freedom for black Americans. Martin Luther King, Jr. was that man. Between 1955 and 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. helped change America. He brought to the world’s attention how unfairly blacks were treated. He had the help of millions of Americans, but his strong leadership and unprecedented power of speech gave people the faith and courage to keep working peacefully even when others did not. This led to new laws that ended the practice of keeping people of different backgrounds apart, making life fairer for everyone. America will always remember the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, on the third Monday in January, we celebrate his birthday. This is the first national holiday to honor an individual black American. The legacy of Dr. King lives in each of us and we are responsible to promote, teach and live the American Dream. PET POOPS/YOU SCOOP

When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR PETS ON LEASHES from Frugé Properties

Tammy Frugé

For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can and immediately email the Grand Lakes Pets Lost and Found: grandlakes4pets@aol.com

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

STOP THAT BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

GRAND LAKES COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) AND HAM RADIO VOLUNTEERS The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, like fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Have you been trained as a CERT member? Leslie Power and Shelia Maneffa are gathering information about CERT trained individuals in Grand Lakes. If you are CERT member and would like to be included in this Grand Lakes Team, please email Leslie: freetofly1234@gmail.com - TEEN CERT trained members are welcome, too. We would like to meet at least quarterly in order to stay informed and organized. If you have not been trained, but would like more information, visit citizencorps.gov/cert - The West I-10 Fire Department holds periodic training classes. Visit their facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/West-I-10-CERT - If interested in a class, contact Scott Fenwick at scottfen@swbell.net - The classes are held one night a week for 8 weeks at the Fire Department. We would also like to include any Ham Radio operators in our Emergency Response Team. If you would like to join us, please let us know. You could be instrumental in our communications should the need ever arise.

COMMON INVESTMENT MISTAKES - AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Investing is too often driven by emotion. Even the most seasoned investors can make bad decisions based on “gut instincts” or something they heard around the water cooler. Here are some of the more common investment mistakes and how you can avoid them. Go with the herd. If everyone else is buying it, it must be good, right? Wrong. Investors tend to do what everyone else is doing. Generally speaking, they can be overly optimistic when the market goes up and overly pessimistic when the market goes down. For instance, in 2008, the largest monthly outflow of U.S. domestic equity funds occurred after the market had fallen over 25%

from its peak. And in 2011, the only time net inflows were recorded was before the market slid over 10%. Don’t do what everyone else is doing. Instead spend more time creating - and sticking to - your investment plan.

at one point, yet all have since filed for bankruptcy, making them perfect candidates for the downwardly mobile investor. Diversify your investments. Hold on to your losers. Suppose you bought a stock five years ago and since then, it has lost 70% of its value. What do you do? Hang on to it hoping that someday it will at least break even? What if it is a dog? Admitting you made a bad decision can be tough to swallow. But if the signs point to your investment being a loser, sell and be done with it.

Buy on tips from friends or pundits. Who needs professional advice when your new co-worker can give you some great tips? With all the experts out there crowding the airwaves with their recommendations, why not take their advice? No one has ever been 100% correct about forecasting the market. Do your own research and make decisions based on your own factors, including time horizon and risk tolerance.

Sell when the market is down, and buy when the market is up. The temptation to sell is always highest when the market drops the furthest. And it’s what many inexperienced investors tend to do, locking in losses and precluding future recoveries. The reverse is true when the market rises. Responding to the market’s ups and downs is a surefire way to lock in losses. Stay steady and keep your long-term goals in mind.

Invest all of your money on one high-flying stock. Sure, if you had invested all your money in Google 10 years ago, you might be a millionaire today. But what if, instead, you poured all of your assets in Enron, Conseco, WorldCom, Washington Mutual or Lehman Brothers? All were high flyers

AND OTHER HOUSTON

L O C AT I O N S Stay on the sidelines until the markets “calm down.” Since markets almost never calm down, this is the perfect rationale to never get in. In today’s world, that means settling for a miniscule “safe” return that may not even keep pace with inflation. Investing involves risk. Set a course that allows you to potentially grow your assets while assuming a comfortable amount of risk.

January 2014

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY • Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. Grand Lakes

HAMILTONVEIN.COM • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semishaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

RAE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration - with record breaking participation - each October. Thousands of schools across America - from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico - participate every October.

KATY ISD’S 16TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ

Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 375 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 16th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promise to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during two weeks in November. This year, 10 Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Cimarron, Creech, Franz, Golbow, Exley, Rhoads, Rylander, Williams, Wilson and Winborn Elementary Schools. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate.
