Even something as simple as a deep breath with sensory techniques ease the mind of stress and anxiety. The problem is, we must make time for these things. Perhaps taking a family trip via plane isn’t a part of the spring break budget this year. No fear! Spending a few days away from Houston is as easy as packing up the car, getting the kids and picking a destination. Check out these ideas: Family road trip number 1: Austin. Under 3 hours from Katy by car with plenty of great food, history and fun. Family road trip number 2: Corpus Christi. This is an excellent destination for beaches, swimming and more. BE WISE - ORGANIZE! It is so easy to keep putting things in your secret pile in that room or area no one sees. But one day someone will notice! Be wise - organize! Here are some easy DIY tips: • Shoe Boxes as DIY Dividers: You can make a completely customizable set with just scissors and shoe boxes. Simply cut the boxes in half by length or width, as needed for your space, then tuck into a drawer. • Picture Frames as Dry-Erase Board: Stay on top of your errands with an eye-catching DIY memo board: Frame a pretty scrap of fabric or wallpaper, hang in a high traffic area and use a dry-erase market to jot down reminders on the glass. • Stepladders as a Bedside Table: This minimalist take on a night table holds only the essentials-a lamp, a smartphone, water-forcing you to edit which items spend the night there. • Magnets as a Medicine Cabinet Organizer: Mount a magnetic strip on the inside of the medicine cabinet door to store tweezers, bobby pins and other grooming tools in plain sight. • A Wine Rack as a Wall Organizer: Hang an unused wine rack on the wall of your garage or supply closet to stash rags, tools, extension cords and more odds and ends. BEST SPRING OUTDOOR WORKOUT Exercise outdoors! Grab a mat (or towel) and a timer to torch fat with this 10-15-20 outdoor Cardio Meltdown: • 10 Long Jumps: Do a long jump the length of your mat or towel and then shuffle backwards to your start position. • 10 Pushups: Kneeling or full, depending on your fitness level. • 15 Sumo Squats: Stand up with your feet wider than your hips and your toes slightly turned out as you sit back into a squat. • 15 Burpees: Start with a jump and then squat down, place your hands on your mat and jump out into a plank position. Jump feet back towards your hands, pop up into standing position and finish with a clap at the top. • 20 Bicycle Crunches: Lie on your back and bend both knees into your chest, hands clasped behind your head. Find a focal point to the left and right of your body. Look at those two focal points as you twist and crunch to each side, reaching your right elbow to your left knee and vice versa. • 20 Mountain Climbers: Start in a plank position and alternate driving your knees into chest, keeping your hips flat and parallel to the ground. Make sure you time yourself performing the full meltdown and try to beat your best time with your next workout. Courtesy: shape.com

GRAND LAKES PET ANNOUNCEMENTS GRAND LAKES PET LOST & FOUND Do you have pets, love animals and want to help your neighbors who have pets? Grand Lakes has a Pet Lost & Found service which helps reunite lost or found pets with their families. To receive pet “amber” alerts, please email Lisa at grandlakes4pets@aol. com and ask to be added to her list. If you ever find a lost pet or lose one of your own you’ll be glad to have this service at your fingertips. Please see more information on page (last page) and in the “Helpful Numbers for Grand Lakes” page in the back.
GRAND LAKES PET LOST & FOUND ON FACEBOOK! Be sure to check out the Facebook pages for pets lost and found in our area: www.facebook.com/GrandLakes4Pets. If residents “like” this page, they will receive even more info. regarding pets for adoption, as well as those found and lost.
5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please check out their website at txlabrescue.org.
ATTENTION: PET POOPS/YOU SCOOP When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR PETS ON LEASHES For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it.
• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.
GRAND LAKES DOG PARK Grand Lakes dog park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

FOCUS ON THE FOREST, NOT THE TREES, OF INVESTING It’s a message worth repeating. Investing is a matter of focus. Despite recent disappointments in stock market performance, investors who are willing to assess the whole universe of investment choices may find that the market continues to offer new possibilities. And those who keep their sights set on long-term investment goals may find that a “forest, not trees” approach to investing offers the greatest potential for success. Focus is especially important for retirement savers - those who are still in the accumulation stage - as well as for retirees who need to keep the potential for growth alive in their portfolios. Are You a Micromanager? As a retirement saver, your employer-sponsored retirement plan gives you the freedom to make your own investment decisions. And because you can easily change plan investments, you may find yourself becoming a micromanager. That’s an investor who changes investments frequently because of daily market movements instead of focusing on the big picture: a long-term investment strategy. But “chasing returns” by moving your money into whatever investment type or stock market sector happens to be doing well at the time rarely pays off in the long run. The Unknowable Future. The problem with chasing returns is that it’s virtually impossible to predict how long a particular investment or market sector will continue to be a top performer. Eventually, another investment or sector will probably take over the lead and there will be little or no advance warning. That can leave you in the lurch if you changed the investment mix of your retirement plan account based strictly on recent performance. The Solution: Keep a Long-term Perspective. You may be much better off by the time you retire if you use a “forest, not trees” perspective when you invest. Concentrate on your goal and choose an investment mix with the potential to help you reach that goal over time.

Your retirement plan offers several investment options, allowing you to choose a well-diversified investment mix for your account. After you’ve chosen your investments, you shouldn’t ignore market and economic developments. But you’ll generally want to stay with your plan unless you decide that changes in your personal situation or risk tolerance make an adjustment necessary. If you’re a “forest, not trees” investor, you can be much less concerned with what the markets do on a day-to-day basis. You’ll be free to switch your investments, but you won’t feel compelled to make a move every time the markets zig or zag. Please email questions/comments to craig@trisperity.com.

MARCH GARDENING TIPS VEGETABLES • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www. plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

THE SCOUTS ARE COMING BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER For some, there’s nothing more exciting than the arrival of the migratory bird, the Purple Martin. They are the largest of the North American swallows. Flying from South America where they winter, they faithfully return to the same locations every year.

The first to arrive are called scouts and they are usually the older males. They are not looking for nesting areas but simply returning to where they nested before. The younger males follow and then the females arrive. Both sexes help build the nest, which will be home to 4 or 5 babies. As soon as the chicks leave the nest, the Martins start congregating in large flocks and roost together in preparation for their trip south. Have you ever heard anyone say, “Location, location, location?” This is especially true if you want to attract Purple Martins. They are colonial nesting birds, which means they occupy apartment-type houses. Since Purple Martins feed while in flight, they prefer their housing be placed in the open, away from human housing and trees. They eat mosquitos, beetles, wasps, dragonflies and other day-flying insects. House Sparrows and Starlings can take over your Purple Martin house. They can prevent Martins from nesting, destroy their eggs and kill nestlings. Do some research on the internet and find out how you can become a successful Purple Martin landlord.

Initially conceived as a way for Katy ISD employees at the administration building to help students and their families, Food for Families has burgeoned into a communitywide initiative that is now primarily supported by individual, private contributions. And for the first time, local eateries donated a portion of their proceeds during the inaugural “Food for Families Restaurant Week,” ultimately helping to provide gift cards for 40 families. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2016 March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mild-mannered hero and his invisible friend. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS) Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.

Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 7th. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which became available January 24th. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system.

RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring
Grand Lakes
throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www. ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
RECYCLE AT THE FT. BEND COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER! The Ft. Bend County Recycling center is located nearby in Rosenberg (just 10 miles away) and accepts glass/bottles and Styrofoam that Waste Management doesn’t pick up. Visit the Ft. Bend Co. government website for information: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us. For more facts on decomposition time, visit http://behealthyandrelax.com/2007/11/how-long-does-it-take-to-decompose.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.
