GRAND LAKES NEWS CONTACT PMG AT 713-329-7100 TO GET YOUR NEWSLETTER “Simple living, high thinking.” Words of wisdom from my father. We all remember hearing, “you’ll remember this when you grow up.” And oh how our parents were so right. You must agree. When reflecting upon my own upbringing, I am grateful for my very simple growth into adulthood. Our parents, families give us as much as they can; the rest is up to us. Food, shelter, clothing are essential, paired with love and care. Vacations, gifts are bonuses. It is the simple things that bring the most joy because there is much thought put into them. Phone calls versus text messages. A greeting card in the mail versus a facebook birthday wish. A visit from a friend versus a tweet. These were the simple things that made life memorable. What are the things you miss about simple living? Just take a moment to reflect and refresh your soul. Blessings for all. Questions, comments: email - monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

TASTY HALLOWEEN TRIVIA
Many kids (and parents) look forward to Halloween for the candy treats more than the festive costumes. For some fun facts on your favorite Halloween food including snack-size bars, gum and candy corn, read on. You might be surprised by how many other parents are dipping into their kids’ trick-or-treat stashes. • Halloween night nibbles. Bite-sized chocolate candies are the most popular type of candy to be included in Halloween activities (76 percent), followed by bite-sized non-chocolate candies (30 percent). • Favorite finds. Eighty-four percent of kids say candy and gum are their favorite treats to receive when trick-or-treating. • Snack-size snitches. Parents admit that their favorite treats to sneak from their kids’ trick-or-treat bags are snack-size chocolate bars (70 percent sneak these), candy-coated chocolate pieces (40 percent), caramels (37 percent) and gum (26 percent). • Sweets for the sweet. Only 7 percent of kids (6-11 years) say they would keep their candy all to themselves if they received lots of Halloween treats. Instead, most would either share some with their family (66 percent), their friends (64 percent) or their teachers (26 percent). Courtesy: nymetroparents

5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET
PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING!
1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet.
Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!
Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please check out their website at txlabrescue.org.
When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!
• Training. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.
KEEP YOUR PETS ON LEASHES
STREET LIGHTS
PET POOPS/YOU SCOOP
For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can and immediately email the Grand Lakes Pets Lost and Found: grandlakes4pets@aol.com.

PARKS, TOWN SQUARE AND COMMON AREAS IN THE COMMUNITY In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.

ASK YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNER
BY CRAIG NARUM CFP®, GRAND LAKES RESIDENT
INVESTORS: DON’T LET FEAR KEEP YOU ON THE SIDELINES While the U.S. stock market, as represented by the S&P 500 Index, has risen a stunning 205.66% as of March 31, 2015, since its low on March 9, 2009, some investors are still reluctant to participate after the near market collapse that accompanied the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Fleeing the market certainly may have felt like the right thing to do at the height of the financial crisis. But history shows that making investment decisions based on emotion has never proven successful. For instance, greed may have led an investor to own too many technology stocks when the bubble burst on that industry in 2000. Alternatively, fear may have caused investors to cash out of stocks following the crash of 1987 and miss some or all of the subsequent rebound. Fast forward to 2015 and the reality is that investors who missed the extraordinary rally that has occurred since March 2009 may have helped to put their long-term accumulation goals at risk. This is especially true for investors with shorter time horizons, such as those approaching retirement. Consider this: From 2010 through 2014, U.S. stocks recorded an average annualized return of 15.5%, compared to 0.1% for money market securities. The nearly nonexistent returns associated with cash-like investments could have a powerful impact on investors’ purchasing power over time.

One of the key determinants to investment success over the long term is having a disciplined approach to balancing short-term risk (stock price volatility) with long-term risk (loss of purchasing power). Finding a “middle ground” in your investment philosophy - and portfolio makeup - may go far toward helping investors manage overall risk and realize their investment goals.

For instance, history supports the case of stocks, as they have tended to outperform other asset classes as well as inflation over long periods of time. But investors who are too focused on the long term may over-allocate their portfolios to stocks - and over-expose themselves to short-term volatility risk. Alternatively, investors who are extremely averse to short-term risk may do the opposite and face heightened long-term risk.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER • Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The regrowth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that oddball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Although DCA does not assure a profit or protect against a loss in declining markets, it can help achieve some important objectives. First, it gives investors a measure of control while eliminating much of the guesswork - and emotion - associated with investing. Second, DCA can help investors take advantage of the market’s short-term price fluctuations in a systematic way - by automatically buying more shares when prices drop and fewer when prices rise.

How might this balanced approach to risk be used to get investors back in the market? One of the best ways to take emotion out of investing is to create a plan and stick with it. And one of the best ways to do that is through a systematic investment plan called dollar cost averaging (DCA). Dollar cost averaging is a process that allows investors to slowly feed set amounts of money into the market at regular intervals.

We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. For more information, contact Heather Sanders at 281-396-2645.

KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. For more information, contact Tammy Stringer at tammyrstringer@katyisd.org or 281-396-2645.
KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. For more information, contact Necole Gibson at 281-396-2439.
KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. In Katy ISD, KEYS offers four opportunities for those who wish to join our KEYS mentor family:

Traditional Mentoring - Pairs one mentor with one child once a week. KSR (Katy Students Run) - Matches running coaches with high school students as they prepare for the Houston Half Marathon. Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers. KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. All mentors must make a one school year commitment to a student and complete an application and background check. For more information, contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.

Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff ’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will

call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a
Grand Lakes
fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
