5 TH ANNUAL KENNEDY’S DISEASE GOLF SCRAMBLE

Please help support our drive for a cure or a treatment for Kennedy’s Disease, aka Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy. Last year you allowed us to write a $32,000 check to the KDA, thank you so much. The 5th Annual KDA Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, September 26th at Cypress Lakes Golf Course, 18700 Cypresswood Drive, Cypress, Texas 77429. With your continued help and generous support, maybe we can reach our goal this year of breaching $100K (we are at $90K) No donation is too small - and all are greatly appreciated! Kennedy’s Disease is a rare and currently incurable and non-treatable X-linked recessive genetic progressive neuro-muscular disease. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons

are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body, which is most noticeable in the extremities (legs/arms), it is especially noticeable in the face and throat and causes speech and swallowing difficulties, major muscle cramps as well as other symptoms. Please go to www.kdgolfscramble.com and sign up to golf at the prestigious Cypress Lakes GC. If you can’t attend you can still sponsor a hole for $100 (silver), $300 (Gold) or $750 (platinum). All levels will give you a professionally done sign, with your name and sponsorship. The Platinum & Gold also gives you green fees & free raffle tickets. Hole sponsorships & donations are tax deductible. Shotgun start is 8 AM and registration starts at 6:45 AM, I will be there for the BBQ lunch & auction at 12 noon. All money collected goes to Kennedy’s Disease research for a treatment or cure. I’d sure like to see you there; maybe we can get a few minutes to catch up. The KDA is a 501(c)3 Organization - for more information please go to www.kennedysdisease.org.

• Fertilize: best way to remember when to fertilize is with the holiday method - St Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and then Thanksgiving, plus a bonus day before Christmas. • Overseed with annual ryegrass: Bermudagrass goes dormant and turns brown in the winter months, so you can overseed it with annual ryegrass. The ryegrass grows and stays green during the cooler months, then dies out once it gets hot - just as your Bermudagrass starts turning green again. • Prevent winter weeds: Stop pesky winter weeds just like you did summer species: Use a pre-emergence herbicide from mid-October to mid-November. • Finish up mowing: Keep mowing your lawn as it slows down during the fall season. Don’t let it get too long as it goes dormant. Courtesy of bhg.com

THE HARDEST WEEKS OF SCHOOL

By the time the September issue is in hands, school will be in session. Kids will be getting adjusted to the normal daily routine they are used to for 9-10 months out of the year. Or will they? The first two weeks of school can be the most difficult - for students, teachers and administration. Here’s why: • New schedule adjustment - sleeping early, waking up early and adhering to a schedule are challenging. • New teachers - equals new classroom policies and procedures, new classroom management techniques, new way of learning, new authority figure. • New classmates - everyone will be seeing some familiar, many new faces. • New grade/learning level - it is intimidating to go to a new grade or even new learning level. It is equally stressful for teachers and administration to adjust to a whole new group of students. • New hopes - everyone will have goals; however, only the most dedicated and driven will be able to achieve them. YOU CAN DO IT!

• Labor Day in Canada began in 1872 in Toronto, but quickly made its way south to the U.S. Originally it began as a significant demonstration demanding rights for workers. • The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. The Labor Day parade of about 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square uptown to 42nd street and ended in Wendel’s Elm Park at 92nd Street and 9th Avenue for a concert, speeches and a picnic. • Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. • On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. • What are we celebrating? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce. • In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living. Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines. • The year in which the 8-hour day was firmly established was 1916 with the passage of the Adamson Act. This was the first federal law regulating hours of workers in private companies. • Traditionally people did not wear white or seersucker clothes after Labor Day, as it unofficially marked the end of summer. • The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend. • Labor Day is the unofficial last day of vacation before the start of the new school year (and mourned by students all over). Stated differently, it is the Back-to-School kickoff (cheered by parents all over!). Courtesy of Forbes.com

When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

KEEP YOUR PETS ON LEASHES For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can and immediately email the Grand Lakes Pets Lost and Found: grandlakes4pets@aol.com.

• Training. Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

GRAND LAKES DOG PARK Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned. The homeowners association maintains all of these areas so if there is any damage to these areas the community pays for it. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community beautiful.

ASK YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNER BY CRAIG NARUM CFP®, GRAND LAKES RESIDENT

RETIREMENT CONFIDENCE: IT’S ALL IN THE PLAN Americans’ confidence in the ability to afford a comfortable retirement continues to rebound from the lows reported between 2009 and 2013. The increasing optimism is coming largely from workers who indicate they and/or their spouse have a retirement plan, such as a defined contribution (401(k)-type) plan, defined benefit (pension) plan or individual retirement account (IRA). This is one of the key takeaways from the 25th annual Retirement Confidence Survey (RCS) - the longest-running survey of its kind, conducted by the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and Greenwald & Associates. According to the 2015 RCS, among workers with access to some type of retirement plan, more than one in five (22%) are “very confident” they will have enough money to live comfortably in retirement, up from 13% in 2009 - a time when devastating losses to retirement plan assets caused by the financial crisis of 2007-2008 crushed investor confidence. This year an additional 36% reported being “somewhat confident” in their ability to live comfortably in their later years, while 24% are “not at all confident” in their retirement prospects. This percentage has remained statistically the same for the past two years. Paying the Bills. The data also showed that workers are becoming more confident in their perceived ability to pay for living expenses in retirement. For example, 37% of workers report being “very confident” that they will be able to pay

10

for basic living expenses - up from 29% in 2014. Similarly, a smaller but growing percentage of workers express confidence in their ability to meet medical expenses (18%) and long-term care expenses (14%) - up from 12% and 9% respectively in 2011. Retirement Plans Make the Difference. Among the total survey population about two-thirds are somewhat or very confident in the steps they are taking to prepare for retirement. Yet the story is quite different for workers without access to a retirement plan. Among this group, only 23% have done a retirement needs calculation and 64% say they have saved less than $1,000. By contrast, among those with access to a retirement plan, 35% have saved at least $100,000 compared with just 3% of those with no plan. Delaying Retirement May Not Be an Option. Perhaps as a way to make up for their lack of planning, 16% of workers in the 2015 study say the age at which they plan to retire has changed and, among this group, 81% plan to retire later than originally expected. But, the researchers contend, this plan may fall flat for many. “Workers still expect to work longer to make up for any savings short falls,” stated Craig Copeland, senior research associate at EBRI and coauthor of the study. “However, many retirees continue to report that they retired before they expected to due to an illness or disability, needing to care for others or because of a change at their job. Consequently, relying on working longer is not a solid strategy for retirement preparedness.” Please email questions/comments to craig@trisperity.com or visit www.Trisperity.com.

5TH ANNUAL KENNEDY’S DISEASE GOLF SCRAMBLE Please help support our drive for a cure or a treatment for Kennedy’s Disease, aka Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body, which is most noticeable in the extremities (legs/arms), it is especially noticeable in the face and throat and causes speech and swallowing difficulties, major muscle cramps as well as other symptoms.

THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATER CO. MAINSTAGE SEASON - 2015 All Shows at Studio 101,1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mac Wellman’s Dracula: By Mac Wellman, Directed by Jennifer Decker. October 15th-17th, 22nd-24th and 29th- 31st at 8 PM. Special matinee October 25th at 3 PM and Pay-What-You-Can night on October 26th at 8 PM. Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely re-vamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Campy and fun, it is the story of two sexually repressed women who find freedom and passion in the vampiric world in the late days of Victorian London. The show was one of Mildred’s Umbrella’s earliest productions and was originally staged by the company in 2004.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016 “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history. October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.

FORT BEND COUNTY AND HOPE FOR THREE HELP TO COMFORT KIDS IN CRISIS With great effort from Hope For Three’s volunteer, Mare Solcher and Deputy Kaminski of the Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constables Office, Hope For Three is helping to make things bearable for children in crisis. Solcher, who chairs the project, recently presented homemade blankets, entertaining toys and soft comforting bears to Precinct 1 Constables Office. Deputy Kaminski, who is a certified Mental Health Peace Officer, stated often times when arriving on a chaotic scene where children are involved, having a cuddly bear or some type of toy on hand, brings comfort to the child. The project is part of the Hope for Three, Autism Advocates Crisis in Training (CIT) partnership with Fort Bend County Law Enforcement. The CIT program seeks to bridge the gap between police response and mental health care by forming a partnership with behavioral health and human services professionals, consumers, their families and law enforcement. For more information on how to donate items for children in crisis, contact Sergeant Soland, Crisis Intervention Team at Scott.Soland@fortbendcountytx.gov. Donations are given to all children including those with unique abilities. For information on Hope For Three, its resources and how you can BE the difference call 281-245-0640 or visit www.HopeForThree.org.

All you really need to host is the ability and desire to share your home and open your heart to a new family member and culture. Families need to provide 3 meals a day, transportation to school and a shared (or their own) room. When you open your heart and home as a host, you introduce a new family member to your traditions and shape a student’s understanding of the US culture. YFU students are between the ages of 15 and 18, are proficient in English, bring their own spending money and carry their own health insurance.
