NEWSLETTER DECISION Did you notice that this month’s newsletter is green instead of blue? That signifies that your Board has adopted the Krenek newsletter as our official newsletter giving us the option to select our own color. Green was chosen to signify the outdoor quality of Grayson Lakes. Since Krenek publishes area news in addition to our articles, our plan is to mark each Grayson Lakes article with the Grayson Lakes logo. The decision to stop publishing our own independent newsletter will save the community approximately $3,500 a year that can then be spent on pressing maintenance issues. Articles are posted to our website at the same time as they are submitted to Krenek, so you can get an early look at Grayson Lakes news by visiting “www.graysonlakesliving.com: latest news/events after the 26th of each month. This posting will beat the paper copy by about 4 weeks. If you prefer to read the newsletter online in its final format, you will find electronic versions at “community: resident forms & documents: Grayson Lakes Recent Newsletters: Krenek newsletters for Grayson Lakes. Electronic versions will be available at about the same time as the paper versions. Your Board gratefully acknowledges work by residents Gwen Heck and Edd Plesko to maintain this important communication link with residents.
Pool Rules and etiquette Summer is in full swing and many residents are enjoying our community pool. However, we have had some complaints about the misuse of the pool and thought it would be helpful to provide a reminder of the rules and pool etiquette: by a resident 18 or older

Rolling thRough stoP signs It is all too easy to fall into a pattern or get lost in thought and forget to stop completely at stop signs. Texas law defines “stop or “stopping as “when required, to completely cease movement and failure to do so is known as rolling through a stop sign or the legal term, “failure to come to a complete stop. With the reduction in speeding Grayson Lakes has become a much safer community. However, rolling stop

signs is now the most reported law breaking community concern. In response, the Ft. Bend County Sherriff’s Office will have no choice but to issue citations for rolling through stop signs. Please help make the community a safer place for ourselves and especially our children, by coming to a complete stop at all of the Grayson Lakes’ stop signs.
Metal tree StakeS Are the supporting wires that initially held your tree in place slack or non-existent? Has your tree started to grow over the support wire and in danger of being killed? If either of these is true, it’s time to remove the metal tree stakes from your yard. This can be a chore. Your Board has heard that Grayson Lakes resident Lanny Hitchcock has equipment to pull these stakes and will do the work for free as long as he can keep the stakes. He can be contacted at LKHitch@yahoo.com
lake level A few residents have asked if the lake has returned to its normal level after last year’s drought. The short answer is Yes. In a typical year, the lake is kept full by natural rainfall. In addition to rain falling directly on the lake, all rainfall within the community boundaries and north of the creek makes its way through the storm sewer system and into the lake. The north lake and the south lake are connected under Grayson Lakes Blvd. and are treated as a single body of water for the purposes of this discussion. Whenever the elevation of the surface of the water exceeds 122 feet above sea level, water overflows to an underground spillway at the corner of Linden Rock and Grayson Lakes. That water makes its way into the creek and from there flows into Buffalo Bayou. Normally, rainfall keeps the elevation of the lake a few inches above 122 feet and we are constantly overflowing the spillway. This is desirable since it helps keep the lake from becoming stagnant. During prolonged dry spells, evaporation can cause the lake to drop below the spillway and we have a well to supplement rainfall. There are probes in the lake that turn the well on if the lake falls more than three inches below the spillway and turns it off when the lake rises to one inch below the spillway. In 2011, this automated system led to about $20,000 in water charges until your Board decided to manually turn the

well off in August. The lake fell an estimated additional 5 inches until we were saved by substantial rains in October of 2011. Since August of 2011, the well has remained off and since October of 2011 there has been enough rain to keep the lake above the spillway. Should we enter into another drought, your Board will need to decide if we are going to return to automated operation or leave the well off until a conscious decision is made to turn it on. At this point, a large fraction of you are asking, “Why don’t we raise the elevation of the spillway to hold more rain water?” The answer is this. Our lakes were designed for flood control and the elevation of the spillway is part of that design.
Board CandidateS needed When the Grayson Lakes community was created by the developer, The Grayson Lakes Community Improvements Association was established to manage and maintain common area property and to interpret and enforce the deed restrictions contained in our governing documents. A 5 member Board is responsible for management of the Association. In December of each year, an election is held to fill expiring terms. Three positions will need to be filled this coming December. Grayson Lakes property owners and/or residents are encouraged to run for the Board and exercise their knowledge and judgment in the operation of our community. The Grayson Lakes CIA Board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Recreation Center. Deliberations include finances, community activities, newsletter content, vendor performance and overall maintenance. A form has been provided elsewhere in this newsletter for those who would like to announce their intention to run for the Board. Please consider stepping up to serve your community.

CrosswaLk Laws With the placement of the Traffic Signals at the main entrance to our community and the removal of crossing guards during school zone times, a little refresher on Crosswalk and Pedestrian Laws couldn’t hurt. This is particularly important since one of the children from our community was struck by a vehicle while in the crosswalk, so please take the time to read below. According to Texas law 5522, no vehicle can enter or pass through a crosswalk while a pedestrian is anywhere in the crosswalk and the crosswalk signal is not a solid red hand or “do not walk;” the vehicle must yield the right of way to the pedestrian(s). You may only drive through the crosswalk once all pedestrians have completely exited the crosswalk. This includes larger streets with a median, such as Katy-Flewellen and is regardless of the direction of travel by the
August 2012
Grayson Lakes
pedestrian. The intersection at the entrance to our community has the new style of crosswalk signals, which includes a count down. During this count down the pedestrian still has the right of way. Only a solid red hand denotes that the pedestrian no longer has the right of way. It is also against the law to enter an intersection without ensuring that you can completely exit the intersection before the signal changes to red. Vehicles waiting to pass through a crosswalk containing a pedestrian should wait outside of the intersection until all pedestrians have cleared the crosswalk. Often drivers will look to their left when making a right turn for oncoming traffic, especially out of our community and will not notice a pedestrian entering the crosswalk on their right. Please ensure that you always look in both directions before entering an intersection, especially to look for pedestrians. Pedestrians should also take steps to ensure their safety when crossing intersections. Pedestrians should dismount anything they are riding before entering the intersection such as bicycles and skateboards. They should also meet the eyes of the surrounding drivers to ensure that the drivers are aware of them. Pedestrians should not stop in the crosswalk, but should keep moving in the same direction as the same pace until they have completely exited the crosswalk. Please help keep our community, especially our children, safe by knowing, understanding and following the laws as described above.

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION CHANGES FOR 2012 - 2013 The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a change in the eligibility requirements for students to receive transportation services. Starting in August 2012, the eligibility for bus transportation will change from the current 3/10 of a mile to approximately 1/2 mile for elementary students and approximately one mile for junior high and high

school students. Bus transportation will continue to be provided for students for whom a hazardous condition may exist between home and school, as well as special needs bus routes. Approximately 52 bus routes (elementary and secondary) will be eliminated, affecting approximately 6,600 students or nearly 21% of the 32,000 students that ride school buses daily. The Katy ISD Transportation Department began building bus routes in June and will have specific routing information available for parents sometime in August. The district will announce specific dates once they become available. The changes are the result of the Transportation Department experiencing particular challenges this year in having a sufficient number of drivers available to meet daily transportation route requirements. Due to vacant routes and driver absences, there have been days in which the department has found it necessary to find drivers to cover up to 46 routes. These changes will allow the district to better meet route driver needs and will provide for more effective route management, including driver training and driver support in issues involving student management. “The change in transportation services comes after extensive review of our current transportation operations that not only revealed a heavy burden for drivers covering multiple routes, but also a high amount of uncertainty and risk due to vacant routes and driver absences,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “In comparison to other school districts, Katy ISD’s transportation eligibility distances remain among the shortest in the Houston area as many districts require students to live outside of a two mile radius.”

CLASS OF 2012 SOS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Spartans Out Serving is a student volunteer organization founded by parents in 2005. This organization strives to educate, empower and inspire the student members to volunteer and serve others. The members learn selflessness and community awareness as they make a positive impact on the community. During the past year, over 1,200 members reported 30,500 community service hours. They have volunteered here at school, throughout Katy and the Houston area, the United States and around the world. This year 139 Senior SOS members completed the requirements to wear a white community service cord at graduation. Each of these students will receive a $1,000 to use towards their education after graduation: Kimberley Argarwal, Kenzie Buchanan, Natalie Chen, Rachel Fallin, Matthew Williamson, Nicole Yost and Jane Weber. Natalie Chen served 535 hours during her time in Spartans Out Serving (SOS). Natalie’s most meaningful volunteer experience was working with children at the Chinese Community Center in Houston through their summer youth Program. She plans to continue to volunteer when she begins her journey at UT Austin. Rachel Fallin served 275 hours during her time in SOS. Community Service changed her life when she became a camera operator at Second Baptist church and she knew she wanted to major in radio, television and film studies in college. The impact of one testimony videotaped and seen by thousands was profound.

of the pain and suffering in the world and plans to continue volunteering wherever he may go. Kenzie Buchanan served 287.6 hours during her time in SOS. The most meaningful volunteer experience was when she went to New Orleans for a week mission with her family in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Kenzie has come to love serving others and finding joy in being able to help out the community. Kimberly “Komal” Agarwal served 154.5 hours during her time in SOS. Komal’s most memorable volunteer experience was at Katy Visual and Performing Art Center as a teacher’s assistant while using her artistic skills. Nicole Yost served 498 hours during her time in SOS. The most meaningful experience Nikki had was building a ramp for a wheelchair bound man through UM Army. She learned skills to be a wellequipped independent homeowner one day as well as touching the life of someone who was prisoner in his own home. Nikki plans to continue contributing to her community wherever she goes.

The criteria they used to select these students is based on the following: Total numbers of hours volunteering at three or more different places and most important what they submitted on x2vol.com and how they answered the two required questions: “How did the community benefit from this project?” and “What did I learn about myself from this event?” Freshman - Abby graeflin, Abigail Rucker, Colby Brown and Charles Deng. Sophomores - Matthew gulick, Kiran Makhnejia, Jack Weber and Caitlyn Mortus. Juniors - Angela Camille, Piper Argo, Mark Melton and Kent Cho. We also have one student that really represented what Spartans Out Serving is all about - serving our community. She brought a new program, “Milk for Many” to Seven Lakes, which collects unused milk, juice and chips at lunch and delivers them to the Katy Christian Ministries Food Bank each day. Our 2011- 2012 Spartans Out Serving MVP is Melissa Keckley.

DECIBELLES (A BArBErShop ChoruS) We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny mathis’ “Chances are,” perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it. Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

All Moms of Katy: come run AMOK with us! We are a fun group of moms who support each other through the joys and woes of parenting with playgroups, park days and the occasional moms night out. Contact membership at allmomsofkaty@gmail.com to get involved.
WoRKing MoMs of Katy
This is a group to support working moms in the Katy area who would like to find support and camaraderie in other working moms and also a social network. Play dates will be held on Saturdays and an occasional mom’s night on a weeknight. I’m hoping that there are other moms out there just like myself who would like to have like-minded moms to hang out with on the weekend and fun things to plan with the kids during non-work hours. If you’re interested, please join my group and take a minute and tell me a little about yourself so we can get to know one another and start building a group together. Katy paRents of gifted and talented suppoRt Kpgt
Did you know there is a support group for the Gifted and Talented Program in KISD? The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. To function successfully as an advocacy organization, KPGT needs membership and volunteer support! Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. KPGT works cooperatively with KISD to co-host events such as the very popular “Super Saturday” and the “Student Summer Scholarship Seminar.” Our non-profit organization offers summer scholarships and grants for innovative programs to the GT teachers in KISD. Won’t you show your support of our efforts and join KPGT today? Visit our website at www.kpgt.org for a printable membership form.
