WHY YOU SHOULD NOT FEED DUCKS HARMLESS GESTURES LEAD TO HARMFUL CONSEQUENCES For generations feeding ducks has been a pastime shared by many of us who have grown up thinking that this was an environmentally responsible and humane way to dispose of old or stale bread. However, feeding ducks and geese is actually unhealthy and potentially dangerous for the birds. This seemingly generous act, in fact, can be extremely harmful. Bread and similar products such as crackers, chips, doughnuts and popcorn are a great source of carbohydrates but have little nutritional value. In fact, feeding bread is equivalent to feeding your child nothing but candy. Without healthy food and proper nutrition the ducks and geese will quickly succumb to disease and death. THE PROBLEMS WITH FEEDING DUCKS Feeding ducks and geese can lead to the following problems as well: • Duckling malnutrition - in areas where ducks are regularly fed bread the ducklings will not receive adequate nutrition for proper growth and development. • Overcrowding - Where food is easy to come by, ducks and other waterfowl will lay more eggs and the pond or lake will become overcrowded. This makes it more difficult for the birds to seek out healthier food sources and increases territorial aggression, especially during mating season. It will also cause ducks to cross busy streets in search of food.

• Pollution - What happens to all that bread that is not eaten? It causes algae growth, pollution and can eventually eradicate fish and other life in the vicinity. • Diseases - A diet rich in carbohydrates leads to greater fecal production and bird feces easily harbors bacteria responsible for numerous diseases including avian botulism. • Attraction of pests - Rotting leftover food attracts other unwelcome pests such as rats, mice and insects. These pests can also harbor additional diseases that can be dangerous to humans. CARING FOR DUCKS & GEESE If you care about ducks and geese, do not feed them. They can live longer, healthier lives by relying on natural food sources such as aquatic plants, seeds, grasses and insects rather than taking handouts from will-meaning humans. Now that you know, you can help by not feeding the ducks and geese and by educating other duck lovers.

Being a responsible pet owner is much more than just providing adequate water, food and shelter for your pet. Domestic pets are completely dependent on their owners for their welfare. • Owning a pet is a lifetime commitment. If you can’t make the commitment, don’t get the pet. • Choose a pet that fits your lifestyle. Don’t get a high energetic dog, if you don’t have the time to exercise him. If you can’t afford grooming or can’t do the grooming yourself, pick a low maintenance dog. • Spay or neuter your pets. There are too many homeless animals without adding to the problem. • Don’t make your dog a “backyard dog.” Dogs strive on companionship and need to be with their human pack. • Be aware of weather conditions. Leaving your dog in the car on a hot day or in the yard without shade or water is risking your dog’s life. • Make sure your home is “pet” safe. Pesticides, medications, household cleaners and some houseplants (dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth and mistletoe) can be deadly to your pet. Keep them out of reach. • Provide veterinary care for your pet. Keep their vaccinations up to date and make sure they have annual checkups. • Keep identification tag on your pet... it is your pets ticket

back home. Both dogs and cats need ID!! Microchipping is good too, but an external tag is essential, it could mean the difference of your neighbor returning your pet to you or turning him into the pound! • Obedience train and socialize your animal. • Don’t let your pets run loose. Dogs should be walked leashes. Any outdoor off leash access should be secure in a fenced area. An outdoor cats average lifespan is 3 years, an indoor cat’s average lifespan is 14 years. • Provide your pet the proper diet. Obesity can be as deadly as malnutrition. Be aware that some foods can be deadly, such as chocolate and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis. • Make sure your pet get proper amount of exercise. • Take extra precautions during holidays like Fourth of July. It is the scariest time for pets, make sure your pets are secure indoors. Also protect your pet during Halloween. • Be kind to your pet and show him with love... remember you are his world. • Take special care of your pet during their senior years. FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact Ft. GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

LOCAL VETERAN GROUPS MEET

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid highphosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

If you are an honorably discharged War Time Veteran or currently serving on active duty and want to associate yourself with fellow Veterans, please consider joining one of the following groups. (Each organization has its own requirements for membership.)

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

AMERICAN LEGION: The Jonathan D. Rozier Post 164 of Katy Texas meets the fourth Wednesday of each month, at 7 PM at the Katy Elks Lodge #2628, at 1050 Katy-Ft. Bend Road, Katy TX. Meetings start promptly at 7:30 PM. The American Legion is the largest war time Veteran’s organization in the nation and invites all eligible Veterans to join. Proud sponsor of the American Legion Boy’s State Program. Greg Clock, Post Commander. Visit us at www.LegionPost164KatyTX.org for more information. VFW: The Floyd E. Breedlove Post 9182 of Katy Texas meets the first Monday of each month at the VFW Hall on George Bush Dr. in “Old Town Katy.” Meetings begin with a covered dish dinner at 6:30 PM, followed by the business meetings of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary at 7:30 PM. Frank Torres, Commander. Ladies Auxiliary President, Betty Edmundson.

• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART: Tri-County Chapter 723 of the MOPH meets the third Thursday of each month at the Katy Fire Station on Ave. D in Old Town Katy. Felix Garcia III, Commander, 386-793-8065 or sgtg31@yahoo.com.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

Additional information is available through the Veterans Memorial Museum at: 281-391-VETS (8387).

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES

cr@crrealtyco.com

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

RUOK PROGRAM

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
