ANNUAL BOAT PARADE
The annual Grayson Lakes Holiday Event was held on December 6, 2015 at the Recreation Center. A huge thank you goes out to all of the volunteers that made this event possible. Without the help of many volunteers this event could not be put on each year. A special thank you goes out to our generous and faithful sponsor of the annual holiday event Bob Miles, Broker Associate, Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene. Their support made it possible for us to make this year better than ever. We were able to have face painting, crafts, cookie decorating, bounce house, trackless train, horseback rides and visits with Santa. A special thank you also goes out to John and Alesia McMahon for bringing their horses every year for the kids to enjoy. If you are interested in helping out with next year’s event please contact Ashley Thompson at ashleythompson08@yahoo.com. As dusk fell that relatively warm Sunday evening, people lined up along the shoreline to watch seven participating electric deck boats parade by. The boats were adorned with sparkling lights, red bows, a glowing balloon, angels and Santa Claus as they navigated through the calm waters of the neighborhood’s largest lake.

Grayson Lakes
The lighted boat parade circled the fountains near the subdivision Club House before traveling into each of the lake’s coves. Shouts of Merry Christmas echoed back and forth between boat participants and spectators in back yards and on public grounds surrounding the lake. This is the ninth year decorated boats have paraded during the holiday celebration, a testament to this unique aspect of the Grayson Lakes subdivision which permits our lakes to be used for specific type of watercraft. There are only a few other lighted boat parades in all of Houston - in Kemah/Clear Lake, Lake Houston and in a Sugar Land neighborhood. This year’s participants in the Grayson Lakes boat parade were the following families: The Raias, the Burtons, the Johnsons, the Killams, the Muellers, the Bays and the Proctors. Many thanks to those who spent hours decorating their boats and participated this year! The lighted boats sporadically will cruise the lake throughout the holiday season, as owners’ schedules permit.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
Please be a good neighbor - keep the sidewalks clear of vehicles, check for low hanging tree branches and overgrown shrubs near the sidewalks, clean up after your pets, put yard waste at the curb only the night before and remove garbage cans from visible sight except for trash days. The trash service includes pickup from your garage, so only yard waste needs to be placed at the curb.

Do you have an expertise you could share? We are always in need of professional advice from our homeowners. Please let Lisa Presley at Crest Management know if you’d be willing to be on an advisory panel for ad hoc advice (e.g. communications, architect, horticulturalist, finance, etc..)

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP
Just some friendly reminders since there have been some recent complaints about pets in our neighborhood. Being a responsible pet owner is much more than just providing adequate water, food and shelter for your pet. Domestic pets are completely dependent on their owners for their welfare. • Owning a pet is a lifetime commitment. If you can’t make the commitment, don’t get the pet. • Choose a pet that fits your lifestyle. Don’t get a high energetic dog, if you don’t have the time to exercise him. If you can’t afford grooming or can’t do the grooming yourself, pick a low maintenance dog. • Spay or neuter your pets. There are too many homeless animals without adding to the problem. • Don’t make your dog a “backyard dog.” Dogs strive on companionship and need to be with their human pack. • Be aware of weather conditions. Leaving your dog in the car on a hot day or in the yard without shade or water is risking your dog’s life. • Make sure your home is “pet” safe. Pesticides, medications, household cleaners and some houseplants (dieffenbachia, philodendron, hyacinth and mistletoe) can be deadly to your pet. Keep them out of reach. • Provide veterinary care for your pet. Keep their vaccinations
4
up to date and make sure they have annual checkups. • Keep identification tag on your pet... it is your pets ticket back home. Both dogs and cats need ID!! Microchipping is good too, but an external tag is essential, it could mean the difference of your neighbor returning your pet to you or turning him into the pound! • Obedience train and socialize your animal. • Don’t let your pets run loose. Dogs should be walked leashes. Any outdoor off leash access should be secure in a fenced area. An outdoor cats average lifespan is 3 years, an indoor cat’s average lifespan is 14 years. • Provide your pet the proper diet. Obesity can be as deadly as malnutrition. Be aware that some foods can be deadly, such as chocolate and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis. • Make sure your pet get proper amount of exercise. • Take extra precautions during holidays like Fourth of July. It is the scariest time for pets, make sure your pets are secure indoors. Also protect your pet during Halloween. • Be kind to your pet and show him with love... remember you are his world. • Take special care of your pet during their senior years. Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact Ft. KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG KATY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES 2016-2017 ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY MODIFICATION The Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve an attendance boundary modification (ABM) designed to address the opening of three new campuses and alleviate overcrowding at campuses landlocked with 125 percent capacity. This ABM will provide much-needed relief to Rylander and West Memorial elementary schools, as well as, balance enrollment as the District prepares to open two elementary schools and one junior high next school year. During this entire process, the District welcomed feedback from the community through an online survey. Nearly 9,000 parents, staff and community members completed the survey and dozens shared their feedback during the open forum at various Board meetings. These comments helped shape the ABM and addressed major needs and concerns cited by parents and community. The District presented to the Board a preliminary ABM proposal on November 16th and then an updated option on December 7th to better address the overcrowding at West Memorial Elementary. The Board approved the updated ABM option on December 14th. The District estimates that approximately 3,600 students will be impacted by the approved attendance boundary modifications. Katy ISD will be notifying all impacted families in January/February 2016. For more information about the ABM process, including maps of the approved attendance boundary modifications, visit the District’s ABM webpage.

Each spring, teachers are invited to apply for a grant through a competitive, three-step evaluation process. Submissions are judged by community volunteers. This year’s grant application process launched in November with teacher grant applications due March 30, 2016. Grants will be awarded in May 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. Foundation Investors pledge annual gifts that range from $1,000 to $50,000 per year. One-time contributions of any amount are also welcome. BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER
Against Benjamin Franklin’s wishes, the Bald Eagle became our national symbol in 1782 and by 1970, they were nearly extinct. There are several reasons for this. It was legal to hunt eagles for sport and the long-held belief that eagles picked up lambs and children with their talons was another reason to kill the birds. Since the diet of the eagle is mostly fish, eagles were killed to protect fishing grounds. The use of pesticides proved disastrous to the survival of the eagles. The chemicals collected in the fish that were eaten by the birds. These chemicals severely limited their ability to reproduce and when they did produce, the eggshells were very thin and weak. The chemical DDT was restricted in 1972. When restrictions were put in place and DDT was banned, the eagle population began to rebound. It was removed from the US government’s list of endangered species in 1995 and went from being classified as endangered to threatened. In 2007, it was de-listed and has been assigned a risk level of “Least Concern.” Bald eagles mate for life but recent research suggests there may be an occasional “divorce” and if a mate dies, an eagle will “remarry.” They work together to construct the largest nest of any North American bird, which they return to every year. The work to build the nest is what actually “cements” their bond. Typically the nests are 5 to 6 feet in diameter and 2 to 4 feet wide and since they tend to use the same nest every year, the nest can continue to get a little bigger every year. They prefer to nest in old growth at least 65 feet high, near open water and away from human habitation but have been seen in populated areas. Because the Bald Eagle is our national symbol, it has been given protection by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The Act prohibits anyone, without a permit issued by the Secretary of the Interior, from “taking” bald eagles. Taking is described to include their parts, nests or eggs, molesting or disturbing the

birds. The Act provides criminal penalties for persons who “take, possess, sell, purchase, barter, offer to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, at any time or any manner, any bald eagle... [or any golden eagle], alive or dead or any part, nest or egg thereof.” In the winter of 1999, a pair of Bald Eagles decided to make The Woodlands their home. Normally staying away from populated areas, these eagles didn’t seem to mind the noise and traffic in the area. The eagles have returned every year and have fledged 22 eaglets. The Woodlands Development Company in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service developed a habitat conservation plan protecting their nesting area from development. FAST FACTS • The only difference in appearance between the male and the female is that she is bigger. Eagles have an average wingspan of 6 to 8 feet. • Bald Eagles can live up to 35 years of age. Of course there are older Bald Eagles on record. • During courtship eagles will soar into the air, chase each other, fly upside down, lock talons and take death-defying spirals back to the ground. This is done with both potential mates and competitors. Timing is everything! Poor timing can result in death for both birds. • They lay 1 to 3 eggs and incubation takes about 35 days. The eggs hatch a few days apart in the order they were laid. It can take 12-48 hours for them to hatch. • It’s not uncommon for the first-born to kill the smaller one. Parents do not intervene. • 40% of young eagles don’t survive their first flight. • They reach full adult size at 2 months. Eaglets fledge at about 3 months but it takes 4 to 5 years to become an adult. This is when they get their distinctive white plumage. • The site of their first flight is where they will return to nest and raise their young. • Once fledged, the young ones will remain around the nest for up to 9 weeks learning to fly and hunt. The parents will continue to feed them. • Bald Eagles have 7,000 feathers.

BEST SUPER BOWL PARTY EVER!! Impress your guests by hosting the best super bowl party this year on February 7th. Here are some FOOD tips that may TRIM the waistline on this traditionally food fest football fun-day: 1. Create a Food Free space: Keeping snacks in another room will help everyone save calories. Plus not having the bowl of chips in front of the TV will curb mindless eating. 2. Low-cal foods first: Instead of bringing out the chicken wings right away, offer lower-calorie foods during the first half of the game, such as a spread of fresh veggies and a lightened-up dip. 3. Give classic recipes a healthy twist: Use nonfat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for dips. Cook Buffalo-marinated chicken tenders instead of chicken wings: you’ll still get that finger-licking yumminess while slashing your intake of saturated fat and sodium. And skip the local pizza delivery; instead, set up stations for everyone to make his/her own healthier and tastier pizza at home. 4. Downsize your dishes. Downsize serving bowls from large to medium. Serve up the tortilla chips in a medium bowl rather than a large one. Same goes for the guacamole: serve that in a small bowl. 5. Be drink aware: choose taller skinny glasses instead of short wide ones. Bigger tip: serve only what your kiddo can enjoy! Courtesy: eatinwell.com Grayson Lakes

CHINESE NEW YEAR FEBRUARY 8 TH! An estimated 1.4 billion people around the world will be celebrating the New Year on February 8, 2016. Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, starts on the night of the second new moon of the winter solstice and ends 15 days later on the night of the full moon. During Chinese New Year, families gather to enjoy delicious foods and to wish each other good luck in the year ahead. Children are often given red envelopes filled with coins, though the money inside is not as important as the color and symbol found on the envelopes, which signifies happiness and good blessings. Each year, the New Year celebration is associated with an astrological animal. 2016 is the year of the Red Monkey, also known as the Fire Monkey. People born in the year of the Monkey are said to be wise, intelligent, confident, charismatic, loyal, inventive and have leadership, according to Your Chinese Astrology. MARDI GRAS 2016!
MARDI GRAS - FUN FACTS: WOULD YOU BELIEVE? • More than 500,000 king cakes are sold each year in New Orleans between January 6th and Fat Tuesday and another 50,000 are shipped out-of-state via overnight courier.
18
• The king cakes include a tiny plastic baby doll inside; the person who finds the doll is declared “king” and must buy the next cake or give the next party. • The metro area’s 37,000-plus hotel rooms are traditionally 95% filled during Mardi Gras weekend. • An economic impact study released by the University of New Orleans estimates that Mardi Gras generates over $840 million annually. • The largest of about one dozen Mardi Gras supply houses in New Orleans sells an estimated one billion pairs of beads for a Mardi Gras season. • The super parades of Endymion and Bacchus, scheduled for the Saturday and Sunday before Fat Tuesday, feature a combined total of 67 floats, 60 marching bands and more than 250 units. Their 4,200 members toss more than 1.5 million cups, 2.5 million doubloons and millions of beads. • One of the most photographed objects in all of Mardi Gras is the Boeuf Gras float in the Rex parade. Since the Middle Ages, the bouef gras (fatted bull) has been the symbol of the last meat eaten before Lent. While once a live bull was included in the procession, now a huge papier-mache’ figure appears. • The five truck parades that follow the krewes of Rex, Argus and Grela on Fat Tuesday feature more than 350 decorated flatbeds with nearly 15,000 costumed maskers aboard. Your partner is a special person - the only one in the world like them, with their own wonderful traits and unique gifts. They are entitled to their own decisions, hobbies, goals and hopes.

3. Be generous and loving in all your dealings with your partner. Give unconditionally, rather than wanting something back in return. Instead, commit 100% to doing things for your partner and with zero expectation. 4. Always have integrity. Commit to tell your partner the total truth, as honesty is one of the key things people want in a relationship. Knowing they can trust you builds a zone of safety and comfort around them. 5. Resolve your differences as soon as they happen. Conflict actually fuels a genuinely passionate partnership. So accept responsibility for your part of the issue at stake and do not blame your partner. 6. Do not criticize. It is ok to complain but not criticize. Your partner is doing the best they can – support them in becoming an even better person. NEVER put your partner down in front of other people. 7. Create a haven for your partner. Make them feel so safe and secure with you that they drop all their defensiveness. Be considerate of your partner’s feelings and treat them with the utmost care and kindness. 8. Let go of the past. All relationships have their difficulties. Remember only the lessons learnt and forget the details. Weather the stormy moments and savor the memory of sunny days. 9. Have a fun date with your partner regularly and often. Give the relationship the same commitment you made when you first met simply put each other first! Courtesy: lifehack.org Grayson Lakes

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,
‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016
“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2016 January 29th-February 21st: “Forever Plaid” On their way to see the Beatles’ American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, a quartet of high school friends’ musical dreams begin and quickly end after a car crash involving a busload of Catholic schoolgirls. March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mild-mannered hero and his invisible friend.
