Newsletter Decision In the July issue of the newsletter, we announced that we are now using Krenek Publishing for our newsletter. We recently discovered that Krenek was not using the correct mailing list and about a third of Grayson Lakes residents did not receive a newsletter until the November issue. Therefore, we are rerunning the article from July. Did you notice that this month’s newsletter is green instead of blue? That signifies that your Board has adopted the Krenek newsletter as our official newsletter giving us the option to select our own color. Green was chosen to signify the outdoor quality of Grayson Lakes. Since Krenek publishes area news in addition to our articles, our plan is to mark each Grayson Lakes article with the Grayson Lakes logo. The decision to stop publishing our own independent newsletter will save the community approximately $3,500 a year that can then be spent on pressing maintenance issues. Articles are posted to our website at the same time as they are submitted to Krenek, so you can get an early look at Grayson Lakes news by visiting “www.graysonlakesliving.com: latest news/events” after the 26th of each month. This posting will beat the paper copy by about 4 weeks. Opportunities to Serve Grayson Lakes Do you enjoy community events? Do you think it is important for Grayson Lakes residents to be informed? Frankly, we don’t have the budget to provide all of the things that make Grayson Lakes a wonderful place to live so we rely on volunteers for “extras.” Many of these volunteers have been working hard for over 5 years and are beginning to wear out. We could use some new energy. Take a look at the committees described below and get involved. You can let Trey, any member of a committee or any member of your Board know you want to help and we will get you started.

Events Committee: The Events Committee organizes the Fishing Derby, the Independence Day Celebration, the Annual Garage Sale and the Christmas Boat Parade and Event. The committee also maintains our Christmas decorations that always need some repair before being hung. There is always a need for help, so please respond when the call goes out for volunteers to support upcoming events even though you might not want to be a standing member of the committee. Communications Committee: The Communications Committee handles the signs at our entrances, maintains the web site and provides content for the newsletter, website and Facebook page. The committee is currently in need of a chairperson, so there is an opportunity for someone to shape the way we keep residents informed. There is also a need for volunteers to change the entrance signs and there is always a need for articles of interest to the community. Let Trey know if you can help.

Safety and Security Committee: The Safety and Security Committee is in need of leadership from one or more energetic people interested in promoting Neighborhood Watch, Neighborhood Night Out and other national and local crime prevention programs. The presence of Officer Singh in our community is keeping crime low and neighbors watching out for neighbors can only make that better. This is a big job, so you might want to encourage like-minded friends to volunteer with you.

The main job for the Safety and Security Committee Chairperson is to create community awareness. Additionally, the chairperson runs the Neighborhood Watch, coordinates the Block Captains and ensures that a captain covers each area in our community. The chairperson contacts the block captains with any safety or security issues in the neighborhood so that the block captains can keep the residents of their block informed. The chairperson will hold meetings as necessary. These responsibilities could be shared by a leadership group rather than falling on a single individual. Lake and Irrigation Committee: The Lake and Irrigation Committee was organized to advise your Board on matters related to the operation of our lakes and our irrigation. The operation of the lakes is now well understood so there is not much activity regarding that topic. Irrigation is another matter. With steadily increasing water rates it becomes more and more important that we irrigate efficiently. Some members of the committee have monitored the effectiveness of soil moisture sensors that we installed.
Reserve Fund Study The Homeowner’s Association Board of Directors contracted to have a Reserve Fund Study completed this year. The Reserve Fund Study was conducted to assist the Board and Budget Committee regarding understanding the useful remaining life of components and systems that the Association is responsible for maintaining. Last year was the first year the Budget Committee was able to earmark monies for the Reserve Fund. This fund is to be used to repair and maintain items in the community that are over and above typical maintenance that is expensed annually. According to the Reserve Fund Study, over the next 20 to 30 years, the Association will be responsible for replacing approximately 1.6 million dollars in community systems and components. The Reserve Fund Study also indicated that the community’s current reserve fund is inadequately funded to maintain these amenities. Therefore, the coming year’s budget will reflect an increased amount earmarked for the reserve fund to meet the Association’s responsibility for amenity maintenance. Once finalized, the Reserve Fund Study will be uploaded to the community web page. The findings of the Reserve Fund Study were discussed at the December Annual Homeowner’s Association Meeting.

Street Light Outages It has come to our attention that some residents don’t know the procedure for reporting street light outages. Your Homeowner’s Association has not contracted for regular inspections and relies on residents to report outages to Centerpoint. Each light pole is marked with a 6 digit number and that is the best way to identify the pole, however, a physical description can be used instead. portunity and of those, stealing from unlocked vehicles is the most prevalent. Thieves target unlocked and unarmed vehicles because the crime is quick and doesn’t raise any suspicion. The thieves look through the vehicles and take any high dollar items that they can find including laptops, radar detectors and GPS/Nav systems and they can be in and out in under a minute. Remember to lock and if equipped, arm, your vehicles every time you leave them. In the instance that you may not want to arm the vehicle, such as arriving home in the early hours of the morning, you can lock the doors manually with your key. Additionally, parking in the street allows the thieves access to your vehicles without even entering onto your property. Parking in your driveway or, even better, in your garage is a much better option. It is also good practice to remove any holders, such as portable navigation system mounts, from outside view by placing them in the glove box or center console. If the holders or mounts are not hidden, thieves can quickly pick out your vehicle from others as likely having valuable items. Please remember to protect your property, starting with your vehicles.

• Please be courteous to your friends and neighbors and park properly. Did you know it’s illegal to park against traffic or block driveways and sidewalks? Parking in the street also poses a danger to children who may run out from between parked cars and it can create delays for emergency vehicles. • RV’s, boats and trailers are not allowed to be stored on driveways or streets in Grayson Lakes. Sure you can bring it by to prepare for your trip, but sorry it can’t be parked in Grayson Lakes for an extended period of time. • Please pick up after pets when they make a deposit in the neighborhood. Everyone loves their dog, but no one like a souvenir on their shoe. • Please keep your dog properly restrained. Even the friendliest of pets can seem scary to some residents and we want all our neighbors to feel comfortable in the community.
Lake Lot Residents PLEASE REMEMBER: If your lot is on the lake, your neighbors see your back and side yards. Please do not use them for storage unless they are screened with shrubbery or a fence. It is very unsightly for your neighbors. Be a good neighbor. Also, storage buildings are not allowed on lake lots. DON’T FORGET, before installing anything in your backyard, get approval from the ARC.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY • Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying.

• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

WOODCREEK ELEMENTARY 1 ST GRADE STUDENT #1 AT ENTIRE SCHOOL FOR COOKIE DOUGH FUNDRAISER SALES! Brandon Bullard was the #1 student at WoodCreek Elementary School by selling over $1,600 in the Cookie Dough Fundraiser. He set a goal to sell 100 items to win the scooter from the prize brochure, but got so excited that he kept selling and ended up selling the most! The fundraiser helps purchase items for the school and is a great way to teach goal setting to young children! He is pictured with his goal poster that his mom and brother helped him create. Thank you to everyone that helped him achieve this goal, he worked hard to finish it! We are so proud of you Brandon! Love, Mom, Dad and Trevor.

KATY ISD’s SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL ADVANCES TO STATE MARCHING CONTEST IN SAN ANTONIO! The Seven Lakes High School Band represented Katy ISD at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday, November 6th. They competed against other marching bands from across the state for top honors. This is quite an achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the directors, band and color guard members.

After earning a Division 1 rating in the Region 23 UIL Marching Contest earlier this month, Katy ISD’s Seven Lakes High School advanced to the Area Marching Contest held on Saturday, October 27th. A total of 22 bands competed in the Area Contest, with 10 advancing to Finals and only 4 advancing to compete at the State Marching Contest. The Seven Lakes High School band was among the top 4 bands and advanced to State! Only 4 times since the 1980’s has a school from Katy advanced to the State Marching Contest and only 2 times in 5A classification. The last time a school advanced to the State Marching level was Seven Lakes High School in 2007, as a 4A school. The State Marching Contest took place at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Tuesday, November 6th. The 5A competition comprised of 38 bands from across the State. These are considered the “best of the best” and competition is steep. 5A Bands began their preliminary performances at 7:30 AM on Tuesday, with the final band performing at 6:15 PM. The Seven Lakes High School Spartan Band performed their “In the Loop” Competition Show at 10:30 AM. The Spartan Band competed with both band and color guard members and comprises approximately 320 members. Directors include: Damon Archer Directors of Bands; David Reynolds - Associate Director of Bands; Jonathan Yoo - Assistant Director of Bands; and Angie Fritsch - Guard Director. Drum Majors include: Grace Chung - Head Drum Major; Alaina Roth; Molly Todd and Mark Milhelin. Rachel Luergering is the band’s Student Teacher. Excitement and support surrounded the Seven Lakes Spartan Band! The school even arranged a “Fan Bus” for students to travel to San Antonio to support the band at their performance! Parents, family, friends, as well as former students could be seen in the Alamodome with “In the Loop” Competition Show t-shirts or orange band shirts. Seven Lakes Principal Ted Vierling, Assistant Principal James Morris, as well as Superintendent Alton Frailey, Assitant Superintendent Joe Kelley, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Christine Caskey and Bob Bryant Executive Director of Fine Arts were also in attendance. The Seven Lakes fan base was said to be the loudest in the stadium, cheering for the band as they entered the field for their performance.

The UIL State Marching competition for 5A takes place every other year (even years). The competition is evaluated by 5 different judges and all bands are given a composite score. Based on these results, the top 10 out of 38 bands advance to Finals, which take place later in the evening. Unfortunately, the Spartan Band did not advance to Finals, however just making it to this level is quite an accomplishment and something to be very proud of. Marcus High School from Flower Mound placed first in this year’s Contest. They also placed first in 2010. 8 out of the top 10 bands in this year’s Finals were also among the top 10 bands in the 2010 State Marching Contest Finals. The Seven Lakes Spartan Band and other bands within the Katy Independent School District are fortunate to have the support of a district that understands the value and importance of Fine Arts to their student’s education and overall success in school. The Seven Lakes High School Spartan Band would like to thank Katy ISD for their support at this recent trip to compete at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest. The band is also very fortunate to have supportive corporate sponsors which include Conoco-Philips, Wal-Mart Transportation, Baytown Shopping Center, M&H Enterprises, Soteica Visual Mesa, Drs. MORE THAN 165 PARTICIPATE IN 15 TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ PROGRAM Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 345 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 15th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promised to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during one week in November. This year, ten Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Morton Ranch, Hutsell, Nottingham, Kilpatrick, King, Pattison, Mayde Creek, Griffin, Bear Creek and McRoberts Elementary. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a threeyear period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. “Promise to Read has become a volunteer event that many in our community really look forward to. Most of our visiting readers return year after year,” says Sandi Meier, Katy ISD Promise to Read and Classroom Champions Coordinator. “Having a guest reader in the classroom is a fun treat for students, but it also promotes the life-long joy of reading.” Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: Amegy Bank, American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, CenterPoint Energy, Chick-Fil-A of Katy, City of Katy, CiCi’s Pizza, Cinco

New Latter-day Saint Congregation in Katy

Growth in the Katy area has led to the need for a new congregation in the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A congregation, called a ward, is a geographic area with about 300-600 church members. When an area sees growth, such that local wards are reaching the upper size limits, a new ward is formed. That is what happened this October in Katy, with the creation of the new Katy Mills Ward. Portions of the existing Katy 1st Ward, Katy 3rd and Katy 4th, make up the new ward. Katy Mills Ward now serves 350 church members south of I-10, between Woods Road on the west and Mason Road on the east, with the south boundary approximately at FM 1463. The Katy Mills Ward is one of eleven congregations that make up the Katy Stake. The Church presence in Katy began with one member in around 1950 and has steadily grown since then and now includes several thousand Latter-day Saints.

The bishop or lay leader of the Katy Mills Ward is Cody Larsen, who works as a finance manager at Phillips 66 and Company. Bishop Larsen will be assisted in leading the congregation with two counselors: Robert Lund and Dave Bleazard. They began immediately setting up leadership for various auxiliary organizations, for youth, children and adults. The new Katy Mills Ward meets at the LDS meetinghouse at 1928 Drexel Road in Katy, sharing that building with two other wards. Their Sunday meetings start at 11:00 AM. Visitors are always welcome. Family Reading Club - January 20 th-March 2 nd This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours - 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week - will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 4th. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 19th. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

INGREDIENTS 4 skinned and boned chicken breast halves 5 cups water 1 large onion, chopped and divided 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 2 celery ribs, chopped (about 1/3 cup) 3 (16-ounce) cans great Northern beans, rinsed, drained, and divided 3 (4.5-ounce) cans chopped green chiles 1 cup canned chicken broth 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro Toppings: tortilla chips, shredded Colby-Jack cheese, salsa, sour cream INSTRUCTIONS Place chicken, 5 cups water, and half of onion in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, and cook 15 to 18 minutes or until chicken is tender. Remove chicken, reserving broth in Dutch oven. Cut chicken into bite-size pieces; set aside. Melt butter in a skillet; add celery and remaining onion, and sauté until tender. Stir chicken, celery mixture, 2 cans beans, and next 6 ingredients into broth in Dutch oven, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, and cook 1 hour, stirring frequently, until thickened. Process remaining 1 can beans in a blender until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides. Stir bean puree into chili. Remove and discard bay leaf; stir in cilantro just before serving with desired toppings. YIELD: Makes 6 to 8 servings PREPARATION TIME: 10 min. COOKING TIME: Cook: 1 hr., 30 min.
