2013 GRAYSON LAKES COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE The annual Grayson Lakes Community Garage Sale was originally scheduled for September 21st, but the weather forecast called for rain and thunderstorms, so the Board decided to add September 28th as an additional day and give the residents of Grayson Lakes a second option. There were 58 registered participants for the two days and the turnout was spectacular. Some residents even took advantage of both days to sell their items, with much success. Katy Christian Ministries was in the neighborhood on the 21st to collect leftover garage sale items as donations. Thank you to all who donated your items. We hope your garage sale was a great success! Please remember that garage sales are only allowed as Board sanctioned events. Watch the community calendar to see when next year’s garage sale will be scheduled.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE GRAYSON LAKES Do you enjoy community events? Do you think it is important for Grayson Lakes residents to be informed? Are you interested in maintaining the attractiveness of our community? Are you willing to promote Neighborhood Watch and other crime prevention programs? Would you like to help your Board make good decisions? If so, we have opportunities for you! Frankly, we don’t have the budget to provide all of the things that make Grayson Lakes a wonderful place to live, so we rely on volunteers for “extras.” Many of these volunteers have been working hard for over 5 years and are beginning to wear out. We could use some new energy. Take a look at the committees described below and get involved. You can let Trey, any member of a committee or any member of your Board know you want to help and we will get you started. EVENTS COMMITTEE: The Events Committee organizes the Fishing Derby, the Independence Day Celebration, the Annual Garage Sale and the Christmas Boat Parade and Event. The committee also maintains our Christmas decorations that always need some repair before being hung. There is always a need for help, so please respond when the call goes out for volunteers to support upcoming events even though you might not want to be a standing member of the committee.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE: The Communications Committee handles the signs at our entrances, maintains the web site and provides content for the newsletter, website and Facebook page. The committee is currently in need of a chairperson, so there is an opportunity for someone to shape the way we keep residents informed. There is also a need for volunteers to change the entrance signs and there is always a need for articles of interest to the community. Let Trey know if you can help. SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE: The Safety and Security Committee is in need of leadership from one or more energetic people interested in promoting Neighborhood Watch, Neighborhood Night Out and other national and local crime prevention programs. The presence of Officer Singh in our community is keeping crime low and neighbors watching out for neighbors can only make that better. This is a big job, so you might want to encourage like-minded friends to volunteer with you. The main job for the Safety and Security Committee Chairperson is to create community awareness. Additionally, the chairperson runs the Neighborhood Watch, coordinates the Block Captains and ensures that a captain covers each area in our community. The chairperson contacts the block captains with any safety or security issues in the neighborhood so that the block captains can keep the residents of their block informed. The chairperson will hold

LAKE AND IRRIGATION COMMITTEE: The Lake and Irrigation Committee was organized to advise your Board on matters related to the operation of our lakes and our irrigation. The operation of the lakes is now well understood so there is not much activity regarding that topic. Irrigation is another matter. With steadily increasing water rates it becomes more and more important that we irrigate efficiently. Some members of the committee have monitored the effectiveness of soil moisture sensors that we installed to ensure we don’t water unless our plants need watering. Results have been mixed and the committee particularly welcomes the involvement of residents who have knowledge of irrigation systems.

• 1 jar, 16 oz. of Arriba Medium Red Salsa or your favorite red salsa • Mix together and bake at 350 degrees F in a preheated oven for 30 minutes.

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE: The Landscape Committee was organized to advise your Board on landscaping matters. The committee is currently involved in making recommendations regarding plant replacements. Any resident interested in the maintenance of our landscaping is encouraged to become involved. The work consists of designing and recommending plans for areas in need of replacement plants.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE: This is the only committee that is defined in our governing documents. It is a seven member committee chosen by your Board and it is responsible for maintaining the aesthetic standards established by the developer of Grayson Lakes. This committee works hard to ensure that Grayson Lakes maintains the same look that it had on the day you bought your house. Membership on this committee does require an understanding of the Architectural Guidelines. BUDGET COMMITTEE: The Budget Committee was organized to develop budget alternatives for consideration by your Board. It also gives residents a way to become involved in the budgeting process. The committee is chaired by the current elected Treasurer and a call will go out for volunteers about mid-year via newsletter, website and Facebook. This describes ways you can support Grayson Lakes through involvement on our various committees. If you know a committee member and want to volunteer, let that member know. If you don’t know someone on the committee that you are interested in, contact Ry Reid at 832-678-5390 or send an email to ry@sterlingasi.com. Remember this, the activities outlined above will go away if there are no volunteers to support them unless we pay to have them done with a resulting increase in dues.

TO RESIDENTS WITH CONCRETE FENCES

Shortly after the first of the year, the Association will initiate a maintenance program for concrete fences. In case there is a question, a concrete fence is shown in the picture.

In this particular case, posts are deteriorating and need to be replaced. If you live on a lot with a concrete fence, please watch your mail box for a letter outlining the schedule for inspection and repair. Workmen will need access to your backyard for inspection and provisions for pets will need to be arranged for both the

inspection and the repair. If you have specific concerns about the concrete fence bordering your property or if you have any special circumstances that need to be addressed, contact Ry at 832-678-5390 or at ry@sterlingasi.com. Remember to watch your mail. Thank you for your cooperation. Residents with wooden or metal fences that lie on the property line adjacent to common areas share responsibility with the Association for maintenance and can expect contact in the future. Residents with an urgent repair issue should contact Ry at 832-678-5390 or at ry@sterlingasi.com.

SHORELINE PROBLEMS IN GRAYSON LAKES This is to let everyone know that your Board is aware that soil movement along the shoreline of our lake is causing the concrete apron to break up. Since the lake is owned by MUD 130, not by the Association, the first step needs to be discussions between the MUD Board and your Board about this situation. At the time this is being written, no discussions have occurred and none will occur until after the first of the year. We know this is a matter of significant concern to residents, so updates will be provided through articles in this newsletter.

LOW HANGING LIMBS If things have gone according to plan, you will notice that many of the trees in common areas have recently been trimmed to remove low hanging limbs. Over time, all common area trees will receive the same maintenance and that maintenance will be ongoing. In the interest of your neighbors, your Board asks that you take the time to check your trees and make sure they are trimmed to allow at least 6 feet of clearance. This will make it much easier on residents who enjoy that daily walk or evening run. Advice about trimming trees, from the Texas Master Gardener Handbook, is paraphrased below. Your Board recognizes that many of our common area trees are also in need of trimming and approved funds, at the July Board meeting, for trimming trees along common area sidewalks. The Budget Committee will include a plan for periodic tree trimming in the future. “According to Dr. Alex Shigo, former USDA Forest Service plant pathologist, thick and heavy branches should be removed flush to the collar at the base of the branch, not flush with the trunk (Figure 6). The collar is an area of tissue containing a chemically protective zone. When a dead branch decays naturally, the decay advances downward until an area of very strong wood - or the internal protected zone - meets an area of very weak wood. At this point, the branch falls January 2014

When the collar is removed, the protective zone is removed, causing a serious trunk wound. Wood-decay fungi can then easily infect the trunk. If the pruned branch is living, removing the collar at the base still causes injury. When cutting branches more than 1 1/2 inches in diameter, use a three-part cut. 1. The first step is to saw an undercut from the bottom of the branch about 6 to 12 inches out of the trunk and about one third of the way through the branch. 2. Make a second cut from the top, about 3 inches further from the undercut, until the branch falls away. 3. The resulting stub can then be cut back to the collar of the branch.”

STREET LIGHT OUTAGES

It has come to our attention that some residents don’t know the procedure for reporting street light outages. Your Homeowner’s Association has not contracted for regular inspections and relies on residents to report outages to Centerpoint. Each light pole is marked with a 6 digit number and that is the best way to identify the pole, however, a physical description can be

The Grayson Lakes Community Pool is now closed and will reopen March 1, 2014. Card keys will not open the gate until the pool is reopened.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. January 2014

Grayson Lakes

• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

KATY ISD’S 16TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ

Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 375 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 16th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promise to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during two weeks in November. This year, 10 Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Cimarron, Creech, Franz, Golbow, Exley, Rhoads, Rylander, Williams, Wilson and Winborn Elementary Schools. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, BP America, Inc., CenterPoint Energy, Chick-fil-A of Katy, College Nannies and Tutors of Katy, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Katy Family YMCA, Members Choice Credit Union, Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Pediatric Dentists of Katy, Pepper Lawson Construction, Rainforest Café, The Shady Lady Window Coverings, Tradition Bank, Wood Group and more. Character development is a component of the Primrose Schools Balanced Learning® system, which helps children understand concepts like friendship, generosity and honesty. Character development is the heart of the Primrose culture and is brought to life through many experiential learning opportunities at Primrose. Teaching respect for one another can have a profound effect on a child not only when they are young, but also as an adult.

CHRISTIN VOGEL EARNS GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD Girl Scout Ambassador Christin Vogel recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl scout can achieve. Less than five percent of girls who join Girl Scouts earn this recognition. Thousands of squirrels and swamp rabbits are injured yearly due to natural causes such as storms and diseases, as well as animal attacks and human interaction. Christin’s project addressed the issue of providing shelter for squirrels and swamp rabbits while they recover from injuries. Christin and her volunteers built squirrel boxes and swamp rabbit boxes to donate to the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center rehabilitates wounded animals with the intent to release back into the wild. The shelters that were built will be placed in their natural habitats and the squirrels and swamp rabbits will use these temporary shelters until they are once again fully adapted to the wild and can live efficiently on their own. Christin also conducted educational workshops at local libraries and informed people about how the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center takes in harmed animals and helps Grayson Lakes

Many have been in scouting since 1st grade. They have learned life lessons through the badges they have earned over the years. The scouts have been in various leadership roles from historian to Senior Patrol Leader. Several of the scouts have attended the National Youth Leadership Training to assist them in their leadership roles. In addition to the various merit badges and countless service hours, the scouts had to choose their own project to manage that would benefit the community. Aaron’s project was to build a workbench for permanent display at the Katy Heritage Society. Ashton’s project was to put in a flagpole for the American Flag at Aristioli Classic Academy in Katy. Colby’s project was to build classroom book/storage shelves for Cinco Ranch High School German Department. Cory’s project was to build storage/travel boxes for tympani set for Katy High School Band.
