Grayson Lakes Board Approves Carried Over Expenditures At the January 11, 2012 meeting, your Board approved a number of expenditures that were carried over from 2011 due to a shortage of funds. • $7,799 was approved for repair and painting of several metal fences throughout the community. Maintenance of metal fences will be an ongoing issue. • $1,955 was approved for repair of the shower at the pool, which developed serious leaks at the end of last year’s swimming season. • The Board accepted an extension to the contract with our landscape maintenance company, CJ’s Yardworks, to add mowing of the Katy-Flewellen median. CJ’s will provide 21 mowings a year at an annual cost of $682.44. • Late last year, a resident noticed grinding sounds coming from the pool area. This was diagnosed as a failing pool pump and your Board approved $1234.64 for replacing the pump.

March Gardening Tips
LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

A Brief History of St Patrick’s Day The story of St. Patrick’s Day begins around 385 A.D. with a man named Maewyn, who at age 16, was sold into slavery, which brought him closer to God. He managed to escape slavery and headed to a monastery in Gaul to study, where he adopted the Christian name “Patrick.” For the next 30 years, he traveled throughout the country, setting up monasteries and converting the natives. After his death in 461 (on March 17th), he was declared a saint. So what happened from there? The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was in America in New York City in 1762, not Ireland, and consisted of Irish soldiers in the English military marching through the city. This was a chance for the soldiers to reconnect with their heritage.

March 2012
Ireland, on the other hand, does not have such a long history of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. This changed around 1995, when the government made a push to use St. Patrick’s Day as a way to drive tourism and to showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Parades and celebrations are now common in Ireland around this day (in fact, their celebrations last several days) and some one million people took part in last year’s festivities in Dublin. When people nowadays think of this day, they get an image of the shamrock in their head. Why? Its origins are rooted in Patrick himself. He used the shamrock as a way to show how the trinity works: three separate elements of the same entity.

Fix Your Body Boredom!
Tired of not seeing results from those hours at the gym? Salads not doing it for you anymore? Check out some of my personal tips. I promise, you WILL see changes and get “unbored” of your body! • Look in the mirror - like what you see? Make it better. Bored with the image? Fix it now. • Get off that treadmill - Jump onto the exercise bike and SPIN. YES - you can do this! • Good-bye sit-ups - Hanging leg pull-ups, planks, reverse crunches are your new friends. • So long to push-ups - Chin ups will get you those strong biceps quicker. • Close your mouth - Trimming that muffin top begins with watching what you eat. • Fast food 1x per month NOT 21x a week - Dietitians recommend fast food ONLY 1x per month. • Do something new NOW - Take a Zumba class, join a local martial arts school, Crossfit; do something new! • No more excuses - Saying you don’t have time means you have time to make excuses. Get up and get going!

Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most

If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.

More than 300 volunteers organize this grand event and ensure that proceeds go to charities chosen by the United Methodist Women. This year, because of the generosity of Chapelwood members, 100% of the proceeds from Spring Thing will support the chosen local and global charities. It includes an expansive silent auction and this year several vacation trips and homes, decorative accessories, jewelry and unique theme baskets. Additionally this market will give shoppers the opportunity to donate directly to a particular charity. Admission to Spring Thing will be free, and entry to the Preview Party is a donation of $10. GOLF TOURNAMENTS Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic is a Golf Tournament that has one main goal. We are all about providing funds to a group of people who are born with Tebial Hemimelia (TH from here on). TH is a rare malformation, 1:1,000,000 or lack of formation of the Tibia which is the weight bearing bone in the bottom of the leg. This tournament started out to pay the medical expenses of Talan Holmes, the tournament chairman’s son. Talan has undergone his first surgery and is now working with his first prosthesis trying to learn to walk. Many families, like the Holmes family, are unaware of TH and until delivery don’t know that their child has TH. Our goal, while still paying the medical expenses of Talan, is to help other families that may not have the ability to raise their own funds or simply can’t raise enough to get their child the prosthesis that he or she needs. The Golf Tournament is on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the River Ridge Gold Club, 3133 Brazos Oak Lane, Sealy, TX 77474. Registration begins - 6:30 AM, Breakfast - 7:00 AM and Event Start Time - 9:00 AM For more information about the tournament, sign up to be a sponsor and to register, visit www.birdeasepro.com/talan2012. THCGC is a 501c3 organization. they did years ago from scrap fabric. Last year we had almost 4,000 people who wanted to make these dolls but we ran out of fabric. I had no idea it would be such a popular station, so I am starting now asking for fabric donations. If you have any fabric (cotton is the best) or old sheets, let me know and I can come get it from you or you can drop it off at a school near you and I can collect it there. If you would like to volunteer at the folk life festival, please contact me at slbedwards@att.net.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today announced the launch of a new summer festival, benefiting the Show and allowing Houstonians an enjoyable, refreshing and entertaining break from the city’s summer heat. Houston’s Hot Summer Break, July 4-8, 2012, is an all day, five-day music, food, beer, wine and spirits festival, featuring top chefs and mixologists, shopping, and live music. Held completely inside Reliant Center, the summer event includes cooking demonstrations, a beer brewing competition, wine and liquor seminars and the search for Houston’s best cocktail, margarita and martini. Patrons also can explore both floors of Reliant Center to listen and dance to live concerts featuring country, blues and jazz music, along with disc jockeys playing a mix of club music. “We are thrilled to announce the development of Houston’s Hot Summer Break,” said Skip Wagner, president of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “Houstonians love to celebrate and this festival offers them a really cool way to do so. We look forward to making it one of the best and most successful events of its kind, offering attendees the ability to get away without going away!” Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar and coffee shop. Net proceeds generated from Houston’s Hot Summer Break will directly benefit the mission of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed approximately $283 million to the youth of Texas. The 2012 Show runs Feb. 28th - March 18th. Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected. Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

KATY TKD ACADEMY’S C3 BOOSTER CLUB COLLECTS TOYS & SUPPLIES FOR TOTS & MARINES Each year the Katy TaeKwonDo Academy’s C3 Booster Club holds several community events that benefit the Katy community. This past holiday season booster club supporters shined in their acts of “Community,” one of the valued “Cs” in the C3 Booster Club name. In December, the C3 Booster Club once again partnered with the U.S. Marines in their Toys For Tots toy drive and this year added a second collection drive - gathering supplies for an active Marine platoon. The generosity of Katy TKD Academy students and C3 Booster Club members was evident as toys mounded in Toys For Tots collection boxes. On “delivery day” Marine representatives joined academy students and staff to celebrate with a photo and a cheer to send off the toys to needy boys and girls. Abundant generosity didn’t stop with toys. Corporal Patrick Reade, brother to academy staff instructor, Michael Reade, is stationed with the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan. Cpl. Reade’s platoon is the fortunate recipient of boxes upon boxes of food and supplies graciously donated by Katy TKD Academy students. The C3 Booster Club is a philanthropic organization that strives to make a difference in Katy and beyond by giving back to its students

Civil Air Patrol Cadet Earns Pilot’s License Cadet 2d Lt. Javier Rocha from Katy, Texas, earned his private pilot’s license in December 2011. The seventeen year old cadet first flew in a CAP Cessna as a passenger during an orientation flight in February of 2009. “During that flight, I knew instantly that I had to become a pilot.” His first act after receiving his license, was to proudly take each family member for a ride. Along with this accomplishment, Cadet Rocha has earned the Doolittle Award, a high honor for cadets. He holds a leadership position in the cadet squadron, has attended encampments for training in emergency services and takes an active part in ground team management during squadron search and rescue exercises. His goal after graduating high school is to obtain a commercial pilot’s license, go to college, then to join the Air Force as an officer in flight training. Javier is currently a senior at Cy-Springs High School.

The Civil Air Patrol is open to boys and girls from the age of 12 thru 21 years old and seniors 21 years old and over. They enjoy good fellowship with training in leadership, ground operations and flight line management. They are afforded the opportunity of flying in orientation flights. They aid their communities at time of local disasters and emergencies.
Outstanding Teacher of American History award Star of Destiny Chapter, NSDAR, was pleased to present Mrs. Kelley Kerlick, 7th Grade Texas History and 8th Grade U. S. History teacher at Cinco Ranch Junior High, with the Outstanding Teacher of American History award at the meeting held January 10, 2012. Mrs. Kerlick has been teaching in Katy ISD for 21 years and while she has taught many subjects, her greatest joy is teaching American History. She loves this country and strives each day to passionately present the history of the United States in a way that not only touches the minds of teens but, more importantly, their hearts. Making the presentation is Star of Destiny Member Rebecca Miller, assisted by her daughter, Anna, who is one of Mrs. Kerlick’s 8th grade students.
Certificate of Appreciation The Star of Destiny, NSDAR, Chapter in Katy, Texas was proud to award Phillip Powell, class of 2012 at Seven Lakes High School, a Certificate of Appreciation for his American flag service. Phillip currently has subscribers in the Seven Meadows and Cinco Ranch Section II subdivisions where he places the American Flag in yards for six American patriotic holidays each year. Phillip developed this flag service after he volunteered for his uncle in Tyler, Texas. He returned to Katy and developed his own business! We commend his patriotic efforts in our community.

The chamber concert begins at 7:30 PM at the church, located at 20775 Kingsland Blvd. The Seven Last Words of Christ provides a musical setting for seven phrases spoken by Jesus Christ while he hung dying on the cross. The St. Peter’s choir is under the direction of David Galasso. General admission tickets are $10 each in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets, visit www.fbso.org or call 281-276-9642.
