SHORT TERM RENTALS NOT ALLOWED

Please be aware that short-term rentals of rooms or entire properties are a violation of deed restrictions.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

If you have an hour to spare each month to help improve your neighborhood, consider volunteering for one of the following committees: Architectural Review, Community Events, Finance, Landscape, Parks Pools, Security, Swim Team or Tennis. For more information, contact Heather Esteban with Crest Management at 281-579-0761.

FIRST HERB SEASON ENDS

The first Green Trails ‘Herb Season’ was a success. Cuttings held on alternating Tuesdays drew many cooks who were eager to learn about and receive herbs at Desert Ivy Park. The Green Trails HOA Board, Landscape Committee chair Chris Abel and the help of Cannon Landscaping have made this venture possible. We hope to add an herb garden at Wisdom Woods Park in 2016 if there is sufficient interest and volunteers to help with planting, plant maintenance and distribution. Cannon Landscaping provides site preparation. We were able to purchase most of the herbs at wholesale price through Cannon. We are looking forward to a successful 2016. Please consider volunteering. It is a great way to meet great people and become involved in the community. Contact Carole Yard, gcyard@sbcglobal.net if interested.

NO CALL IS TOO SMALL

Call the Constable to report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch for Green Trails is via their direct line at 281-463-6666. If something “doesn’t seem right,” don’t wait to be sure. Trust your intuition, call it in and let them decide. You are our best defense.

MOSQUITO CONTROL

Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito Control, but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program includes removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these problem areas: 1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths, which can hold dampness or water. 2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters. 3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles around house. 4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes after watering, you are over watering. 5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray under deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain. Plastic under decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.

DOGGIE DON’TS

Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a leash and picking up after your pets. We thank you! HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog owners allowing their dogs to defecate and urinate in yards. This is especially a problem in high-traffic

If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, be sure you are treating the right problem. Chinch bugs, Brown Patch and Take-all Root Rot fungus are all possible causes. Chinch bugs can be a problem when the weather is hot and dry. Keep lawns properly watered. Excess nitrogen fertilizer makes the lawn more susceptible to chinch bugs. A few chinch bugs are normal, but large brown areas, especially near pavement, need attention. To check for cinch bugs, cut a plug of half-dead, half-alive grass and submerge in water. Chinch bugs (black bodies, white wings) will float. Even if bugs are present, keeping the area well-watered may keep the grass from turning brown. You can apply a solution purchased from a lawn/garden store to help control them. Brown patch thrives in warm, humid environments, especially as nights get cooler. It can cause patches of your lawn to turn brown, wilt and dry up. If you pull on a clump, the blades will break off, leaving the runners. Turf affected by Brown Patch will grow back, usually from the middle of the area out leaving a round ring just before it rebounds completely. Brown Patch often appears in turf, which is high in nitrogen and overfertilized. Large amounts of grass clippings left on the yard may also encourage fungus. Wet soil also encourages fungus. If you irrigate, do so late at night, just before and at daybreak - not in the evening or just after dark. Be sure your yard drains and does not hold standing water. Consult your garden center or the internet for fungicide suggestions. Two or three treatments may be needed during a growing season. One suggested organic treatment for brown patch: Mix one TBSP baking soda, one TBSP corn oil and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution to your lawn. In order for fungicides and fertilizers to work, you will need to test the PH of your soil. Lawns need to have a PH which measures 6.5 - 7.0. You can use a PH test kit or a PH soil probe. Take-all Root Rot Fungus attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. If you pull on a clump of brown grass, it will lift easily - roots and all. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch fungus which usually appears when nights are cooler. For more information on identification and treatment, go to www.plantanswers.com/ root_rot_fungus.htm. Part of this information is from www.bugspray.com/article/fungus.

WATERING TIPS

Conserve water; water only when needed. Your goal should be 1 to 1 1/2 inches per week. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages deeper root growth and helps your yard endure dry spells. Adjust your irrigation so that it does not spray paved areas or run off over curbs. Consider running two shorter cycles to allow water to soak in. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day; you will lose more water to evaporation.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Safety Tips

Taylor High School

In this Season of Giving, we’d like to GIVE thanks for you! The holidays are here! However, there are more than a few hazards lurking among your festive preparations. Here are five important safety tips:

1 be careful with candles:

Nothing kindles the holiday spirit like candles, but those are open flames in your house! In a three-year span, candle fires caused around 130 deaths and $360 million in damage. If you’re leaving the house or going to sleep, blow out all of your candles first!

2 protect your kids and pets:

Holiday decorations can easily be mistaken for a shiny snack. Keep bite-sized ornaments out of reach and remember that mistletoe, poinsettia and holly berries are toxic. It’s best to avoid these if you have kids or pets.

3 be safe with holiday lights:

About 1,300 people are sent to the emergency room every year due to holiday light accidents. Before you plug yours in, check for frayed wires, damaged sockets and gaps in the insulation. If you find problems, toss the lights.

Front row L-R: Brooke Murski, Madison Chalker, Ashley Martin, Katelyn Woolie, Jordyn McCullough and Summer Foley. Back row L-R: Brianna Rangel, Whitney Woolie, Rebecca Hobblesand, Hannah McKinley, Lauren Ramsey, Bren Hefty, Lauren Fecht and Shelby Wilson.

TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY CHEERLEADERS

Taylor HS Varsity Cheerleaders are spreading their cheer this season by taking part in their selected volunteer services. Some of the girls will divide their time within the church, NCL and neighborhood charities.

for grease fires: 4 prepare Your kitchen will probably see a lot of action this season, and grease can ignite without warning. Keep a fire extinguisher handy, and if you wind up in a pinch, remember that flour and baking soda also squelch grease flames. Water does not!

5 climb ladders responsibly:

Each year, more than 164,000 people visit the emergency room because of a ladder accident. Decorations often call for a climb, so be safe by always keeping three body parts in contact with the ladder at all times.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 - November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also our “outing” days to perform in the community. Come and join this fun and wonderful music ministry. Please contact Gail Shipley at 281-782-1598 or gshipnote@live.com for more information.
