Fireworks are a violation of the deed restrictions for the Association of Green Trails Phase II. When reporting a violation of the deed restrictions, you must provide a description of the violation and the address of the home where the violation exists.

Home Improvement Reminder

Remember, ALL exterior changes and improvements made to your home or yard (including your fence and roof) requires ARC approval first. If you are replacing your fence, please be aware the fence guidelines were revised in 2004 and a new or replacement fence cannot be installed identical to original fence. If you are planning on replacing your roof, keep in mind the Association’s guidelines only allow for shingles that are Weathered Wood or gray in color. Please do not base your home improvement decision on the fact that someone else in the neighborhood has the same improvement. Security Tips

If you see something suspicious, call the constable at 281-463-6666. Turning on exterior lights makes it easier for the constable or alert neighbors to see your home and to also see what is going on outside it. Park your cars in your driveway and lock them. Keep doors and windows locked (including garages) and alarms set. Trim shrubs so windows are visible. If you are going to be out of town, turn in a Vacation Watch Form. Use timers on lights. WHEREAS, The Association of Green Trails Phase II (hereinafter referred to as the "Association"), is the owner and/or operator of a Pavilion (the "Pavilion") serving the residents of the Green Trails subdivision Houston, Texas; and WHEREAS, the undersigned resident (hereinafter referred to as the "Resident"), desires to reserve the Pavilion owned and/or operated by the Association and use of the same for a private party to be held for / to Resident and his/her/their guests and invitees on ; and WHEREAS, the Association is willing to allow the Resident to conduct such private party and utilize the Pavilion for such purpose and on such date(s), but only upon the following terms and conditions, to which the Resident expressly agrees to be bound: 1.In the event of any damage to the Pavilion, the Resident agrees to be responsible for any and all repairs necessary to return the Pavilion to its condition prior to rental. Further, Resident will pay, upon presentation, any invoice(s) for such repairs. By his/her signature below, Resident agrees to allow a lien to be filed against his/her property (at the address shown below), in the amount of any such damages. 2.The Association shall not be liable for any claims or demands of any kind arising out of the Resident's use or occupancy of the Pavilion, or for any claims or demands of any kind resulting from loss of life, personal injury and/or damages to property incurred or sustained by the Resident or any of the Resident's guests, invitees, licensees, employees, agents, or contractors, arising directly or indirectly, proximately or remotely, from or out of the Resident's use of the Pavilion for the purposes of conducting a private party on the date(s) shown above. 3.Resident agrees, and by these presents does agree, to indemnify and forever hold the Association, its officers, employees, agents, successors and assigns harmless from any and all claims, liabilities, actions, charges or expenses (including attorneys' fees) in connection with the loss of life, personal injury, and/or damage to property arising or alleged to arise directly or indirectly from or out of the occurrence of any event or incident upon or within the Pavilion before, during or after private party or while the Resident, or his/her guests, invitees, employees, agents, and/or contractors are in route to or from the Pavilion before, during and/or after the private party to be held by the Resident; and the Resident, on behalf of him/her/themselves has/have released and do(es) hereby release the Association for its sole negligence and joint negligence for the residents and the Association; its employees, officers, agents, successors and assigns, from and against any and all such claims, actions and/or damages arising directly or indirectly out of Resident's use of the Pavilion for the above stated purposes. 4.The Association shall not be held responsible for any liability due to or resulting from alcoholic beverages served on the premises. 5.Lifeguard fees are to be the direct responsibility of the Resident, and arrangements are to be made directly by Resident with the Association's pool contractor. Residents ONLY may reserve court times. A Green Trails resident who is a USPTA certified tennis pro is available for private or semi-private lessons at our courts for residents only. If interested, contact Laurence Sombito at 281-769-2701. Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time in advance for lessons or leagues, must contact the tennis committee through Elaine Kearney at 281-492-6848. To reserve court time, the sign-up bulletin board is located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the sign-up sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes.) This is to allow maximum court usage for all residents during prime times (mornings and evenings). Should you sign up prior to 48 hours in advance or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. (Of course, you can walk on and play as long as you like if the courts are not previously reserved.) New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. The wheelchair access gate has been tampered with and will be locked to prevent use by non-residents. Residents needing wheelchair access to the tennis courts, please contact the tennis committee and we will be happy to provide you with a key. The lights at the Gerry Ayers courts are numbered. Please note the number of the light before calling to have it repaired. Any maintenance problems at the courts can be reported to Brigitte Hobbesland, 713-591-0880. The tennis court lights are on a timer, they should come on at dusk and turn off by 10:30 pm.

PARENTS: Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your yearly maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Curbside Recycling Info

Curbside recycling now includes all glass, papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans that are placed within the provided recycling bin. Please only use the recycle bins for recyclable materials. If items exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to bin, well marked as recycling materials. If you find items left in your bin, it means they are not recyclable. Please dispose of these items in your trash container for the next scheduled pick up. Please remove caps, liquids and food products from inside the containers when recycling. See www.greentrailstwo.com for additional trash and recycling guidelines and how to obtain additional bins if needed.

WEBSITE

The Website for Green Trails Phase II (www.greentrailstwo.com) has a “blast email” function. This feature allows the Association to send news to residents on a mass basis. The Board of Directors intends to start utilizing this function more frequently to disseminate important information, particularly in emergencies like Hurricane Ike. If you have not registered and would like to do so, please go to the “Join Our Mailing List” section of the Website. The only information that you need to enter is your email address. Each of the other items is optional, including your name. None of the information will be distributed to third parties.

Suspicious Activity?

Call the Constable   and report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch for law enforcement in our neighborhood is to call the constable direct at 281-463-6666. An alert Green Trails resident recently foiled a car theft by calling the constable when something didn’t seem right. The suspects were arrested. Remember, “No call is too small.”

Please note that the association pays electrical charges for a streetlight whether the bulb is functioning or not. To report street light outages you can contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222 or www.centerpointenergy. com. Be sure to note the pole number and the street address.

How Do We Look?

Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Read, volunteers promised to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during one week in November. This year, ten Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Morton Ranch, Hutsell, Nottingham, Kilpatrick, King, Pattison, Mayde Creek, Griffin, Bear Creek and McRoberts Elementary. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. “Promise to Read has become a volunteer event that many in our community really look forward to. TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL CLASS LAUNCHES WEATHER BALLOON TO OVER 100,000 FEET!

The Taylor High School Computer Science 2/3 class launched a weather balloon on Saturday, Oct. 20th, from just west of LaGrange Texas. The balloon journeyed a distance of 61 miles and reached a maximum altitude of 103,000 feet. Teacher, Don Adams, explained “I started formulating the idea of a team-building project for my class during the summer. Many schools have done this kind of project before so I wanted ours to be a little different. I challenged the students on the first day of school using a Prezi presentation of the recent Mars Rover mission and the resulting reaction of the NASA team at the control center during the actual landing. I asked them to work as a team and send a camera to 100,000 feet to take pictures. Any experiments or electronics they sent up had to be built by them. They had to do all of the research and product selection for the mission as well as examine the legal requirements by the FAA for launching weather balloons. To accomplish this “mission,” one of the students took on the role of project coordinator and the rest of the students were divided into the teams necessary to plan and execute the mission.”

The teams that the students decided on were: A legal team with the responsibility of researching and making sure they complied with all FAA regulations regarding balloon launches. The payload team was tasked with the design of the payload package to include the container for the experiments and cameras, as well as what experiments were to be sent aloft. They learned how to do electronic soldering and how to assemble electronic boards to contain the chips and memory cards necessary for each experiment. They also had to take into account the extremely cold temperatures encountered at high altitudes as well as the hurricane force winds the payload would pass through. The launch and recovery team was responsible for all launch and recovery procedures. They developed a checklist to be followed the day of the actual launch. This team also selected the balloon and parachute recovery system and was also tasked with calculating how much helium would be required for the balloon to reach 100,000 feet. The balloon, when launched, would have a diameter of 6.5 feet and by the time it reached 100,000 feet would expand to over 30 feet in diameter. The software team developed tracking software to project approximately where the landing would occur. Coupled with software from the University of Wyoming and wind aloft reports from the US Weather Service we were able to narrow the search area to a small triangle several miles wide. The actual recovery site was inside this triangle! The end result is over 5,000 pictures taken every 2 seconds from pre-launch to the max altitude. The team used an iPhone to get live GPS updates as to the location of the balloon when it landed. However, the software on the iPhone failed shortly after the launch and the balloon disappeared for two weeks until its location was discovered by a farmer/rancher in one of his fields west of East Bernard. The payload was recovered intact and included two cameras, the iPhone (which still recorded the track the balloon followed), temperature sensors and an altimeter/GPS unit that recorded the altitude using up to 66 satellites for triangulation. The coldest temperature recorded by the temperature sensors was a -67 degrees Fahrenheit. Mr. Adams commented “All in all, I was very pleased with the entire project. It was an empty feeling when the balloon disappeared but seeing the

student’s reaction when I revealed the recovered balloon to them in class was something I will never forget. The team building aspect of the project accomplished everything and more that I had hoped. This is something we will definitely repeat.”

New Latter-day Saint Congregation in Katy

Portions of the existing Katy 1st Ward, Katy 3rd and Katy 4th, make up the new ward. Katy Mills Ward now serves 350 church members south of I-10, between Woods Road on the west and Mason Road on the east, with the south boundary approximately at FM 1463. The Katy Mills Ward is one of eleven congregations that make up the Katy Stake. The Church presence in Katy began with one member in around 1950 and has steadily grown since then and now includes several thousand Latter-day Saints. The bishop or lay leader of the Katy Mills Ward is Cody Larsen, who works as a finance manager at Phillips 66 and Company. Bishop Larsen will be assisted in leading the congregation with two counselors: Robert Lund and Dave Bleazard. They began immediately setting up leadership for various auxiliary organizations, for youth, children and adults. The new Katy Mills Ward meets at the LDS meetinghouse at 1928 Drexel Road in Katy, sharing that building with two other wards. Their Sunday meetings start at 11:00 AM. Visitors are always welcome. A congregation, called a ward, is a geographic area with about 300-600 church members. When an area sees growth, such that local wards are reaching the upper size limits, a new ward is formed. CHILDREN • Storytime - Storytime for preschool-aged children is held each Wednesday at 11:15 AM. Stories, fingerplays and songs are featured. This is ideal for children ages 3 to 5, but all children and their caregivers are welcome. • INFANT STORYTIME - This program will meet each Thursday morning at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM. This is an interactive program for children, ages 0 to 18 months and their caregivers. Each session will last about 20 minutes, featuring nursery rhymes, songs and finger plays. • TOTALLY TODDLER STORYTIME - Toddlers, ages 18 to 36 months, are invited to participate in our Totally Toddler Storytime, which will be held on Tuesdays, at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM and Wednesdays, at 10:15 AM. This program is designed with “little wrigglers” in mind. Together the children and their caregivers participate in songs, games, fingerplays and hear some good stories. Tickets are required for Toddler Storytime. Tickets are given to the first 30 toddlers the day of the event. • Afternoon Art- Glue, paper, scissors, markers, fun and more! STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. DIRECTIONS: Pour the apple cider and maple syrup into a large stainless steel saucepan. Place the cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, orange peel and lemon peel in the center of a washed square of cheesecloth; fold up the sides of the cheesecloth to enclose the bundle, then tie it up with a length of kitchen string. Drop the spice bundle into the cider mixture. Place the saucepan over moderate heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cider is very hot but not boiling. Remove the cider from the heat. Discard the spice bundle. Ladle the cider into big cups or mugs, adding a fresh cinnamon stick to each serving if desired.
