COMMUNITY EVENTS IS GREATLY IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS
We have 4 community events a year (Easter Egg Hunt, July 4th Parade & Pool Party, Fall Dive-In Movie & Snow Day) and without volunteers, these events would not happen. In the past, we had enough volunteers where each person only had to help an hour for each event. The more volunteers, the lighter the load for all involved. If you have children who enjoy these events, please consider volunteering and contact Kristie Poldervaart at poldervaartk@gmail.com or 281-647-9483.
Mosquito Control
Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito Control but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program includes removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these problem areas: 1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths can hold dampness or water. 2. Clean out stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters. 3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles around house. 4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes after watering, you are over watering. 5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray under deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain. Plastic under decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.

Remember, ALL exterior changes made to your home or yard [including your fence] require ARC approval first. In need of an ARC form? Go to our neighborhood website at www.greentrailstwo.com.
Curbside Recycling Info
Curbside recycling now includes all glass, papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans that are placed within the provided recycling bin. Please only use the recycle bins for recyclable materials. If items exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to bin, well marked as recycling materials. If you find items left in your bin, it means they are not recyclable. Please dispose of these items in your trash container for the next scheduled pick up. Please remove caps, liquids and food products from inside the containers when recycling. See www.greentrailstwo.com for additional trash and recycling guidelines and how to obtain additional bins if needed.
STORM DRAINS
It is easy to overlook our storm drains, except during a heavy rain. These drains divert excess rain water and prevent street flooding. The rain water flows from the drain through a storm drain system into our bayous and eventually into Galveston Bay. Please be mindful of what goes down these drains. Problem No. 1 - FLOODING Blowing leaves or debris can clog drains and cause street flooding. Problem No. 2 - WATER POLLUTION Storm water receives NO treatment, so if storm water is contaminated by pollutants - then it stays polluted. Try to minimize use of lawn chemicals to prevent chemical runoff into the bayous. Do not pour oil or chemicals down the drain; take them to a recycling center.
6
May 2012
Problem No. 3 - IT IS ILLEGAL So, do not put anything other than clean water into the storm drains. For more information, visit www.CleanWaterClearChoice.org.
GREEN TRAILS TENNIS NEWSLETTER
PARENTS: Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. We try to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities our neighborhood enjoys for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort them home. Should you notice anyone abusing our courts, please contact the constable at 281-463-6666 and report it. Please note: tennis courts are for tennis only. Please let your children know that the courts are not for soccer, bike riding, skating or any other use. We want to keep our courts and amenities in good condition for the use they are intended for. If you are interested in playing ladies tennis, we can offer you a spot on league teams at the B level (Monday) or A and B levels (Wednesday). The Tennis Committee has approved court reservations for these times. Each league level is currently looking to add new resident players. If you are interested in joining a ladies league, please contact Elaine Kearney - number is below. Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time in advance, must contact the committee through Elaine Kearney, 281-4926848. A Green Trails resident who is a USPTA certified tennis pro is available for private or semi-private lessons at the Green Trails courts for residents only.
Green Trails II
KATY PAINTING
The tennis committee requests you book your lessons by signing up for the court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening lessons or weekend mornings). If interested, contact Laurence Sombito directly at 281769-2701 for more information. Sign-up boards are located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period (this means 3 blocks on the sign-up sheet). Should you sign up too early or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. Also, remember to keep the gates locked at all times. Please do not prop open our gates, this damages the locking mechanisms. If you are a new resident and need access cards, please contact Karen Janczak at Crest Management, 281-579-0761. ONLY Green Trails residents should have access cards for the courts; please do not give extra cards to friends. Crest Management will be notified if non-residents have cards. You must have a card to access the tennis courts. If someone requests that you allow them entry to our courts, please do not allow anyone access that does not have a card. If you see that the brooms or water-remover rollers are lying on the court, we ask that you please make an effort to hang those in order to preserve them. Please be considerate and pick up any trash you have left on the court. Should you encounter any maintenance problems with any of our courts, please contact Brigitte Hobbesland, 713-591-0880. The lights at the Gerri Ayers Recreation Center are numbered. Should you notice a light out on the court, please note the number before calling to have it repaired. Tennis court lights are on a timer. To turn on the lights, flip the switch to the “ON” position; lights will come on within 15 minutes. If the lights have been on and then turned off, it will take the lights 15-20 additional minutes to come back on. This one switch controls lights on all courts.

How Do We Look?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

About Our Furry Friends
Harris County requires both dogs and cats to be vaccinated, licensed and kept in fenced yards or on leashes. This is for the safety of both our neighbors and your pets. Remember, that if you leave food outside for a dog or cat, you may be attracting other nuisance animals, including rats. If your dog tends to bark, please do not leave it outside. When walking your pets, PLEASE PICK UP AFTER THEM!
GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
• Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.

Morton Ranch High School hosted its 7th annual Black History Program on February 16th. This year’s theme, “HEROES,” paid homage to the student’s heroes within their lives - whether a past historical figure that paved a way for them to have a better today or someone within their family that is their constant cheerleader. Student performances ranged from original poetry works, lyrical and hip-hop dances, skits and songs. Nottingham Country Elementary in Katy celebrates 30 years of ExcelleNCE in education on Thursday, March 22, 2012. The event drew a huge crowd of over 600 students, parents and Board members. It was a festive event, with the Taylor High School band marching down the sidewalk and the Memorial Parkway Junior High cheerleaders performing. Kristin Abel, the PTA President, presented NCE’s Principal Marlene Bourgeois, with a new electronic marquee as a gift to the school. The new electronic marquee was paid for by the PTA and generous sponsors such as Mac Haik, BP and other local Katy Businesses. Gary Reeves was honored for serving NCE with over 10 years of replacing the letters on the old sign. Marlene spoke and acknowledged several members of the Katy ISD Board who were on hand and then the band and cheerleaders lead the crowd through the newly renovated cafeteria, while enjoying the new mural, into the gym. The 1st grader’s, led by Nancy Lawrence, performed a song, followed by the NCE Choir. Everyone enjoyed cupcakes, browsing memorabilia from over our last 30 years and celebrated the schools achievements. All had a good time.

Living Word Lutheran Church Dedication and Blessing of Quilts and Kits
On Sunday, March 25th, the interior of Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy was transformed for a Dedication and Blessing of Quilts and Kits for Lutheran World Relief. Hand tied quilts decorated all the pews. Baby Care Kits filled with baby clothes, diapers and blankets were on display, in addition to 100 red backpacks filled with school supplies. Volunteers of all ages joined the fun after the service as they packed the quilts and kits into boxes to be delivered to the warehouse in Baltimore, Maryland. From there, they will be distributed to people in need located in areas of natural disaster, or countries recovering from war. The quilts are used as wall dividers in refugee camps, mattresses and blankets to keep bodies warm or to wrap up for comfort when feeling alone. These gifts of comfort were the project of Piecemakers, a community quilting group, that meets three times a month at Living Word Lutheran Church in Katy. If you would like to join the group for a work session or to donate fabric, thread or bedding, call the church office at 281-392-2300.

Who: Joe Joe Bear Foundation a 501(c)(3) organization When: June 9, 2012 Why: When visiting hours are over, children in hospitals with life-threatening illnesses are alone, with no one to comfort them. A gift of a teddy bear from the Joe Joe Bear foundation is the comfort they need in these lonely times… a reminder of those who love them and want them to overcome their illnesses. We have given thousands of bears to hospitals like Shriner’s and MD Anderson; but the need is always present.

FoundationsAcademy.com Award Winning HFAC Actors Academy presents Les Misérables School Edition at the Berry Center
The award-winning Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) Actors Academy is proud to present the school edition of the 8-time Tony award winning musical Les Misérables performed entirely by students! This compelling musical voyage into post-revolutionary France opens on Saturday, May 5th at the Berry Center 8877 Barker Cypress Rd, Cypress, TX 77433 and has 8 performances through Sunday, May 13th. The epic story presented in Les Misérables School Edition is a great way to introduce children to the magic of musical theatre. Broadway’s legendary musical, originally adapted from Victor Hugo’s timeless novel, has been specially adapted to meet the needs of young performers. Relentless in its musical drive, Les Misérables School Edition is filled with powerful imagery of darkness and light, highlighting, throughout its dramatic action, the struggle inherent in the human condition and the indomitability of the spirit, despite great suffering. Set in 19th century France, this classic and poignant musical, tells the story of Jean Valjean, a strong-hearted man jailed for stealing a loaf of bread. As he struggles to make a new life for himself given his new found freedom, he must grapple with questions of faith, fatherhood and allegiance to the law. PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE Performance Location: The Berry Center 8877 Barker Cypress Rd, Cypress, TX 77433 (easily accessible from 290 and I-10). Opening: SATURDAY, May 5th at 3 PM

Volunteers Needed - We Believe In The Power Of Second Chances
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator.
