MOSQUITO CONTROL

Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito Control, but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program includes removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these problem areas: 1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths, which can hold dampness or water. 2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters. 3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles around house. 4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes after watering, you are over watering. 5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray under deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain. Plastic under decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.

DOGGIE DON’TS

Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a leash and picking up after your pets. We thank you! HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog owners allowing their dogs to defecate and urinate in yards. This is especially a problem in high-traffic areas near park entrances. Be aware that it is not just your dog. Once a yard has been “used,” other dogs want to do so as well. A resident should not have to pick up after even one dog, much less ten. In addition, runners and walkers in our parks don’t enjoy dodging excrement. Please carry a bag and pick up after your pet. Remember also, that even the sweetest dog may seem intimidating to some people. Respect their rights and comply with leash laws.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LAWN?

If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, be sure you are treating the right problem. Chinch bugs, Brown Patch and Take-all Root Rot fungus are all possible causes. Chinch bugs can be a problem when the weather is hot and dry. Keep lawns properly watered. Excess nitrogen fertilizer makes the lawn more susceptible to chinch bugs. A few chinch bugs are normal, but large brown areas, especially near pavement, need attention. To check for cinch bugs, cut a plug of half-dead, half-alive grass and submerge in water. Chinch bugs (black bodies, white wings) will ﬂoat. Even if bugs are present, keeping the area well-watered may keep the grass from turning brown. You can apply a solution purchased from a lawn/garden store to help control them. Brown patch thrives in warm, humid environments, especially as nights get cooler. It can cause patches of your lawn to turn brown, wilt and dry up. If you pull on a clump, the blades will break off, leaving the runners. Turf affected by Brown Patch will grow back, usually from the middle of the area out leaving a round ring just before it rebounds completely.

Brown Patch often appears in turf, which is high in nitrogen and overfertilized. Large amounts of grass clippings left on the yard may also encourage fungus. Wet soil also encourages fungus. If you irrigate, do so late at night, just before and at daybreak - not in the evening or just after dark. Be sure your yard drains and does not hold standing water. Consult your garden center or the internet for fungicide suggestions. Two or three treatments may be needed during a growing season. One suggested organic treatment for brown patch: Mix one TBSP baking soda, one TBSP corn oil and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution to your lawn. In order for fungicides and fertilizers to work, you will need to test the PH of your soil. Lawns need to have a PH which measures 6.5 - 7.0. You can use a PH test kit or a PH soil probe. Take-all Root Rot Fungus attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. If you pull on a clump of brown grass, it will lift easily - roots and all. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch fungus which usually appears when nights are cooler. WATERING TIPS

Conserve water; water only when needed. Your goal should be 1 to 1 1/2 inches per week. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages deeper root growth and helps your yard endure dry spells. Adjust your irrigation so that it does not spray paved areas or run off over curbs. Consider running two shorter cycles to allow water to soak in. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day; you will lose more water to evaporation.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers. KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. In Katy ISD, KEYS offers four opportunities for those who wish to join our KEYS mentor family: Traditional Mentoring - Pairs one mentor with one child once a week. In addition to being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, he has also successfully earned 38 merit badges, completed 162 hours of service, camped 126 nights and hiked over 230 miles. He held numerous leadership positions (Patrol Leader, Chaplin’s Aid, Instructor, Troop Guide, Assistant Patrol Leader) and he is currently the Troop 584 Senior Patrol Leader. He attended and staffed National Youth Leadership Training and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Jacob will be a senior at Seven Lakes High School in the fall and plans to attend college to pursue a career in medicine.

Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Early registration cost is $80 for Basketball and for Cheerleading until November 2nd. The cost after November 2nd is $90. This year the cost does include the basketball shorts or the cheer mock turtleneck for Cheer. January 9, 2016 The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through ﬁtness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. 10TH ANNUAL KATY WINE FEST TO SUPPORT THE BROOKWOOD COMMUNITY’S “CENTER FOR LEARNING” The 10th Annual Katy Wine Fest hosted by the Cinco Ranch Rotary will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Café at Brookwood, located at 1752 FM 1489 in Brookshire. “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love.
