VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

If you have an hour to spare each month to help improve your neighborhood, consider volunteering for one of the following: Pocket Park Monitor/Gerri Ayers Park Monitor/Community Events/Community Events Chair/Landscape Chair/Architectural Review Committee/Community Awareness Chair. If any of these interest you, please contact Kristie Poldervaart at poldervaartk@gmail.com or 281-647-9483.

NO CALL IS TOO SMALL

Call the Constable to report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch for Green Trails is via their direct line at 281-463-6666. If something “doesn’t seem right,” don’t wait to be sure. Trust your intuition, call it in and let them decide. You are our best defense.

MOSQUITO CONTROL

Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito Control, but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program includes removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these problem areas: 1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths, which can hold dampness or water. 2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters. 3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles around house. 4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes after watering, you are over watering. 5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray under deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain. Plastic under decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.

DOGGIE DON’TS

Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a leash and picking up after your pets. We thank you! HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog owners allowing their dogs to defecate and urinate in yards. This is especially a problem in hightraffic areas near park entrances. Be aware that it is not just your dog. Once a yard has been “used,” other dogs want to do so as well. A resident should not have to pick up after even one dog, much less ten. In addition, runners and walkers in our parks don’t enjoy dodging excrement. Please carry a bag and pick up after your pet. Remember also, that even the sweetest dog may seem intimidating to some people. Respect their rights and comply with leash laws.

As we near the end of the month and (hopefully) cooler nights, change your watering times so that grass does not stay wet at night. That encourages brown patch and other fungal diseases.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LAWN?

If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, be sure you are treating the right problem. Chinch bugs, Brown Patch and Take-all Root Rot fungus are all possible causes. Chinch bugs can be a problem when the weather is hot and dry. Keep lawns properly watered. Excess nitrogen fertilizer makes the lawn more susceptible to chinch bugs. A few chinch bugs are normal, but large brown areas, especially near pavement, need attention. To check for cinch bugs, cut a plug of half-dead, half-alive grass and submerge in water. Chinch bugs (black bodies, white wings) will float. Even if bugs are present, keeping the area well-watered may keep the grass from turning brown. You can apply a solution purchased from a lawn/garden store to help control them. Brown patch thrives in warm, humid environments, especially as nights get cooler. It can cause patches of your lawn to turn brown, wilt and dry up. If you pull on a clump, the blades will break off, leaving the runners. Turf affected by Brown Patch will grow back, usually from the middle of the area out leaving a round ring just before it rebounds completely.

Watch for brown areas that may be due to chinch bugs. Verify that is the problem before you spray. Practice water conservation. During hot weather, water lawns late at night or early morning to reduce evaporation. Consider two short cycles rather that one long one to allow water to soak in. Deep watering promotes deep roots and healthier lawns. Comply with any restrictions established by our MUD districts. If you see a problem with sprinklers in common areas, please report it to Crest Management.

Brown Patch often appears in turf, which is high in nitrogen and overfertilized. Large amounts of grass clippings left on the yard may also encourage fungus. Wet soil also encourages fungus. If you irrigate, do so late at night, just before and at daybreak - not in the evening or just after dark. Be sure your yard drains and does not hold standing water. Consult your garden center or the internet for fungicide suggestions. Two or three treatments may be needed during a growing season. One suggested organic treatment for brown patch: Mix one TBSP baking soda, one TBSP corn oil and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution to your lawn. In order for fungicides and fertilizers to work, you will need to test the PH of your soil. Lawns need to have a PH which measures 6.5 - 7.0. You can use a PH test kit or a PH soil probe. Take-all Root Rot Fungus attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. If you pull on a clump of brown grass, it will lift easily - roots and all. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch fungus which usually appears when nights are cooler. For more information on identification and treatment, go to www.plantanswers.com/ root_rot_fungus.htm. Part of this information is from www.bugspray.com/ article/fungus.

WATERING TIPS

Conserve water; water only when needed. Your goal should be 1 to 1 1/2 inches per week. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages deeper root growth and helps your yard endure dry spells. Adjust your irrigation so that

TO DO FOR SEPTEMBER

Apply a low-nitrogen winterizer fertilizer to the lawn toward the end of this month or early in October. You may begin planting bulbs for spring. Use superphosphate or bulb food instead of bone meal to feed bulbs if squirrels are a problem. Refrigerate tulips, hyacinths, muscari and crocus at least 4-6 weeks before planting.

GREEN TRAILS TENNIS

Please note: Our tennis courts are for tennis ONLY. Please let your children know the courts are not for soccer, bike riding, skating, climbing or any other use. ACCESS CARDS New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card.

Because Green Trails is not in a high risk area for storm surge, we will likely be encouraged to “hunker down rather than evacuate. Do you have your emergency supplies? Have your valuables and important papers organized and ready in case you do need to leave after the storm.

COURT RESERVATIONS To reserve court time, the sign-up bulletin board is located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the sign up sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes.) This is to allow maximum court usage for all residents during prime times (mornings and evenings). Should you sign up prior to 48 hours in advance or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. (Of course, you can walk on and play as long as you like if the courts are not previously reserved or in demand.)

To avoid a last minute scramble: Keep your yard picked up so loose items and debris do not become windblown missiles. Prune branches that may hit your house and remove dead trees.

TENNIS LESSONS/COACHING Please book tennis lessons by signing up for a court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening or morning lessons, please.)

PEAK HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE

HerschelRothchild.com GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

For more information contact Christine Rothchild at 281-599-6519 or c.rothchild@kw.com

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant.

Green Trails II

• Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

NEW HOPE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

New Hope Child Development Center ended another fun year with many joyful celebrations including Splash Day and Graduation ceremony. Our “Big Kids” sang and danced their hearts out to a very proud audience of parents and students. There was lots of laughter with a few tears mixed in. We are always sad to see our children grow up and move on but we’ve been doing this for nearly 35 years so you would think we would be used to this by now! Our year was sprinkled with many community outreach projects benefiting Pregnancy Help Center’s Connor’s Closet, JoJo’s Bears, Eternal Food Ministries, Souper Bowl of Caring and several Homeless ministries.

forget to make your windows and floors sparkle. If your carpet appears old and stained, think about replacing it.

Lighten up Let the sun shine in, and turn on the

lights. Open all blinds or curtains, and make sure the house is well lit.

Temperature Be sure potential buyers are comfort-

able when touring your home. If it's freezing outside, leave the heat on, and if it's summer, turn on the air conditioner.

Keep it ready to show It may be a little inconve-

nient, but until you accept an offer, keep your home trim overgrown shrubs, especially if they block in tip-top shape at all times. What this means is that windows or the path to your front door. each room should have a clear purpose, nice flow and be clean and clutter-free. Paint It’s important to make your house generic. A fresh coat of neutral paint will make your home appear larger, brighter and more appealing to potential buyers.

Make repairs Fix things like leaky faucets and

sticky cabinets, and replace old screens. They may seem insignificant, but minor repairs add up in the mind of a potential buyer.

Rearrange Make sure your furniture placement al-

lows for easy traffic flow and shows the purpose of each room. If you have too much furniture, weed it out! If you don't have enough furniture, borrow or rent.

Pack up This includes personal photos and por-

traits. Less is always more. The less clutter and knickknacks you have lying around, the more potential buyers will be able to see your home and what it offers.

Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely revamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Campy and fun, it is the story of two sexually repressed women who find freedom and passion in the vampiric world in the late days of Victorian London. The show was one of Mildred’s Umbrella’s earliest productions and was originally staged by the company in 2004. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history. October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

GRACE NOTES

Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also our “outing” days to perform in the community. Come and join this fun and wonderful music ministry. Please contact Gail Shipley at 281-782-1598 or gshipnote@live.com for more information.

Misc. Events DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30

HOUSTON CHILDREN’S CHARITY

Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids. org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

ADOPT A US SOLDIER

Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.
