(GT ESTATES) Security
Neighborhood security is provided by the Harris County Constables Precinct 5 Office, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. We also have an additional contract with them (Contract 50 - in conjunction with the other sections of Green Trails and Windsor Park Lakes). To contact the Constable’s Office: • Emergency - 911 • Harris Country Constable Dispatch: 281-463-6666. PLEASE CALL THEM IF YOU SEE ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS OR NEED SECURITY INFORMATION. The Constable’s office encourages residents to call if they see any suspicious or bothersome activity. Please keep your vehicles locked at all times to reduce crime of opportunity.
(GT ESTATES) Vacation Watch
Residents of Constable Precinct 3 contract subdivisions, which include Estates of Green Trails, can have their homes checked by a drive-by patrol officer while they are away on vacation. Please contact the Constable’s office at 281-427-4791 or 713-453-6959 or complete a Vacation Watch Form, which can be found in the Forms section - You will need to complete the form and submit it to the Constable’s office one week before you leave! If your home is monitored by a private security alarm system, please be sure to tell them you are in Green Trails Contract 50 with the Harris County Constable in Precinct 5. You must also have an Alarm Permit with the Harris County Sheriff’s office. There is a $35 new permit fee or a $10 renewal fee for the permit. The application can be found on the following web site: www. hcso.hctx.net/forms/forms.asp.
(GT ESTATES) Trash Service 2011
Estates of Green Trails has bi-weekly trash pick-up on Wednesdays and Saturdays by Waste Corporation of America (WCA) (Phone 281-368-8397). Should you be overlooked by WCA on a pickup day, please call WCA directly and register any complaints with Sterling ASI (Phone 281-491-0266). They will follow up with WCA about the problem. Holidays, which fall on our pickup days mean that trash will be picked up the next school service day. The following is a list of holidays observed by WCA Services: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Please have your trash ready for pickup by 7 AM on pickup days. Landscaping debris, such as large bags of grass clippings, tree branches/limbs, etc. will be picked up either day, but it must be carried to the end of your driveway and left there for pickup; you can bring these heavy items out the night before, but please not several days in advance of pickup. Your neighbors appreciate it! Heavy household items such as hot water heaters, washers, etc. are considered “heavy trash” and are picked up on Thursdays only. All other trash will be picked up “at the back door” (outside the gate beside the garage, etc.) by WCA. Please be sure trash is visible and/or accessible to them, and please keep all pets safely away from that area of your yard. We pay for “back door” pickup, so that is where the men look for your trash.
(GT ESTATES) Recycling
Recycling plays an important role in how we help to protect the environment. The recycling day for the neighborhood is on Wednesday. Have your recycling bin at the curb no later 7:00 AM. You can recycle the following items; newsprint, magazines, phone books, corrugated boxes (broken down), noncorrugated cardboard (i.e. cereal boxes, soda boxes, etc.), HDPE Plastics 1 & 2 (look for the little triangle symbol usually on the bottom of the container with the number inside of it), aluminum and tin cans. No glass or any items not listed above, please.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Schools FIRST is a statewide rating system created to ensure that school districts are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices, while achieving improved performance in the management of their financial resources. The Schools FIRST accountability rating system assigns one of four ratings, with the highest being Superior Achievement, followed by Above Standard Achievement, Standard Achievement and Substandard Achievement. Approximately 784 out of the 1,029 school districts in Texas received the Superior Achievement rating this year. Katy ISD also recently announced that it has been named a Five-Start District in the Texas Comptroller’s Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) – one of only 23 districts in Texas to receive this rank for two consecutive years.

facility and vocational program for adults with disabilities. The bike rally or BW15 provided residents with a fun, inclusive bike ride. Some Brookwood residents rode tandem bikes with volunteers from the churches. Others rode independently on either regular or specially modified bikes. Church members from the Katy 3rd and 4th wards, two congregations from the south Katy area, provided food and drinks for the participants. The LDS volunteers also came to support the residents with cheering and encouragement. After the bike rally, the Katy churches provided a carnival with games and activities for the residents at the Brookwood community. This event was part of a broader Houston-wide “Day of Service” in which many Houston area Latter-day Saint congregations participated. The Brookwood community is located in Brookshire, Texas and provides an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging and demands dignity and respect for adults with disabilities. The Christmas Revels: Musical Theater in Celebration of the Winter Solstice
The darkest time of the year casts a powerful spell over nearly every culture in the northern hemisphere, and has given birth to countless ways of celebrating the winter solstice. Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/ German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenth-century Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas. As always, this interactive family friendly show will include superb music, lovely costumes, and traditional dances. Our adult and children’s choruses will add to the warmth, as will performances by accomplished guest artists, including an Alphorn duet and yodlers, who are genuine interpreters of Bavarian culture. A keepsake booklet containing information about the Bavarian celebrations and songs featured in the show is included with the ticket. Don’t miss this heartwarming event and join in with our nationwide family of returning Revels fans. Local Mentors Needed to Mentor One Child and change two lives!
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. The Harris County Leadership Academy and Krause Center are in Katy and close to home. WE desperately need loving and caring Katy resident mentors for the 150 + boys that do not have have anyone visiting them! One CROSSROADS mentor says, “Volunteering through CROSSROADS has been a truly rewarding experience. I’ve mentored some really good kids who made some really bad choices and it’s been gratifying to get to know them, earn their trust and watch them grow.” Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Susan Burden (Katy Resident) at 713-295-2784, sbcrossroads@gmail.com or visit us at www. CROSSROADS-volunteers.org.

SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.
