STAYING POSITIVE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but all too often we ﬁnd ourselves feeling stressed out rather than joyful this time of year. Though the holiday season can be stressful at times, it is important to remember the true reason for the season and to stay positive. It seems year after year Thanksgiving is the kickoff to a season of greed and discontentment. Just hours after ﬁnishing the Thanksgiving meal, people rush out to begin the frenzy of holiday shopping, overspending, and complaining. So many people spend the holidays comparing themselves to others and are disappointed when they feel like they don’t measure up to those around them. We complain about the lack of square footage and not enough oven space while preparing a feast for our families, meanwhile forgetting that millions of people are going to bed hungry and homeless each night. One excellent way to stay positive during the holiday season is to get involved with a local charity. Whether you spend a day feeding the homeless or giving out toys to local children, seeing how other people live will open your eyes to how truly fortunate you are. Getting the entire family involved can be a wonderful learning opportunity for children. Seeing so many kids who don’t get presents makes it awfully hard to complain about not getting exactly what you wanted on Christmas morning. Another key practice to staying positive is to stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone has a different idea of how the holidays should be. Don’t feel disheartened when your family doesn’t decorate as elaborately as the house next door. After all, happiness is not related to the size of your Christmas tree or the number of presents under it.

Remember the true meaning of the season and don’t get overwhelmed by the details associated with this time of year. The heart of the holidays is love and peace. Rather than getting stressed out by holiday trafﬁc, long lines at the mall, or maxing out your credit card, focus on showing love and compassion to the people around you. Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous. The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the Los Angeles Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season. 1. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. 2. Dress casually and comfortably. 3. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. 4. Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. 5. Always carry your driver’s license or identiﬁcation along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use. 6. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. 7. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. 8. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. 9. Keep cash in your front pocket. 10. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. 11. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

Recreational facilities of Green Trails Estates are ready for the upcoming summer outdoor season with recent upgrades to both pool and tennis courts. “The pool and the courts look beautiful!” says Tom Reilly, GTE HOA President. “We’ve invested over $60,000 to resurface the pool and courts, as well as install a new smart-card access system. Please refrain from depositing any debris (lawn clippings, leaves, pet waste, motor oil, etc.) into the streets or storm drains. Disposing of debris in the street or other portions of the storm water drainage system can create problems. Flooding takes place when the system becomes blocked with debris. This can create a ﬂooding potential that could result in property damage. The water quality is impacted if you’ve used chemicals on your lawn or garden. In addition, pet waste left on yards can contribute to contaminated run off. Grass clippings and leaves left in the storm water system contribute to system wear and can destroy the underground system. Please make sure you dispose of your lawn clippings, leaves and other debris in a proper manner.

will follow up with WCA about the problem. Holidays, which fall on our pickup days mean that trash will be picked up the next school service day. The following is a list of holidays observed by WCA Services: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Please have your trash ready for pickup by 7 AM on pickup days. Landscaping debris, such as large bags of grass clippings, tree branches/limbs, etc. will be picked up either day, but it must be carried to the end of your driveway and left there for pickup; you can bring these heavy items out the night before, but please not several days in advance of pickup. Your neighbors appreciate it! Heavy household items such as hot water heaters, washers, etc. are considered “heavy trash” and are picked up on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All other trash will be picked up “at the back door” (outside the gate beside the garage, etc.) by WCA. Please be sure trash is visible and/or accessible to them, and please keep all pets safely away from that area of your yard. We pay for “back door” pickup, so that is where the men look for your trash.

Recycling plays an important role in how we help to protect the environment. The recycling day for the neighborhood is on Wednesday. Have your recycling bin at the curb no later 7:00 AM. You can recycle the following items; newsprint, magazines, phone books, corrugated boxes (broken down), non-corrugated cardboard (i.e. cereal boxes, soda boxes, etc.), HDPE Plastics 1 & 2 (look for the little triangle symbol usually on the bottom of the container with the number inside of it), aluminum and tin cans, paper, plastics 1 through 7, all glass and all metals. Items excluded include plastic bags, Styrofoam, pizza boxes and food soiled items.

(GT ESTATES) RECREATION CENTER

Estates of Green Trails own the Recreation Center at Shillington Drive and Fry Road. It consists of an Olympic-size swimming pool, totally reﬁnished in the spring of 2015 and two tennis courts, recently reﬁnished in 2015. Use of these facilities is allowed to all Estates of Green Trails residents in good standing who have paid their annual maintenance fee. Green Trails Section III residents in good standing with their homeowners association can also use these facilities. Only residents who have been issued Pool/Tennis Court Access Cards from Sterling ASI are admitted into the pool and allowed to use the tennis courts.

In the fifth year of having an FFA program, Faith West Academy went to the Harris County Fair (October 13th-17th) well prepared and came home with scholarships, belt buckle, ribbons, trophies and merchandise. The Texas FFA is the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest state FFA association with a membership of more than 106,000 and more than 1,045 local FFA chapters. The luncheon was held at the Hilton Americas located at 1600 Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010. Founded in 2009 by children’s author and public speaker, Melissa M. Williams, READ3Zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. One of the primary creative projects at READ3Zero is the annual short-story contest, which emphasizes the concept that reading and writing go hand in hand. The program provides leadership and speaking opportunities to the students after they are published. Children are also allowed to submit drawings for the front and back cover of the book. Organizations, businesses and community members are able to help fund the efforts of READ3Zero by contributing support for future projects. Nottingham Country Elementary School BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN HELD

Nottingham Country Elementary held the annual Boosterthon Fun Run on October 8, 2015. Boosterthon’s theme this year was Big World Recess. Students learned about fitness, leadership and character during the two week program, which included six character plays from real kid athletes on how to Win with Teamwork, Live with Curiosity, Score with Practice, Play with Humility, Ride with Confidence and Run with Endurance. All students in Kindergarten through 5th grade participated in the Fun Run and the average number of laps ran was 34. Students raised pledges from all 50 states, and earned the privilege of sliming two faculty members, Assistant Principal Becky Marron and Coach Rashad Lee, along with Boosterthon team member Tick Tock Taylor. To date, $30,000 has been collected from the fundraiser. Boosterthon Fun Run is organized by the NCE PTA and is

1 be careful with candles:

Nothing kindles the holiday spirit like candles, but those are open flames in your house! In a three-year span, candle fires caused around 130 deaths and $360 million in damage. If you’re leaving the house or going to sleep, blow out all of your candles first!

2 protect your kids and pets:

Holiday decorations can easily be mistaken for a shiny snack. Keep bite-sized ornaments out of reach and remember that mistletoe, poinsettia and holly berries are toxic. It’s best to avoid these if you have kids or pets.

3 be safe with holiday lights:

About 1,300 people are sent to the emergency room every year due to holiday light accidents. Before you plug yours in, check for frayed wires, damaged sockets and gaps in the insulation. If you find problems, toss the lights.

FIRST ANNUAL WOMEN’S QUARTER MARATHON EVENT

January 9, 2016 The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’sonly race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES,‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The ﬁrst half of the season as follows: 2015 - November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake ﬁnds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC.
