MOVEMBER VS. NO SHAVE NOVEMBER (2 CONCEPTS, 1 GREAT CAUSE)

It’s November which can only mean one thing, No Shave November, Noshember or Movember. Whatever you call it, it’s the month to raise awareness for men’s health. According to the American Cancer Society, one in six men in their lifetime could be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The society reported, “There are 238,590 new cases of prostate cancer in a year in the United States.” Despite popular belief this isn’t just a hipster holiday for men to prove how “manly” they are by the size of their beard. At the root of this movement is awareness, solidarity, and promotion of a healthy life style. People often confuse the two, Movember and No Shave November with each other. In reality these are two separate things for one great platform: Prostate & Testicular Cancer Awareness and research. No Shave November: This facial hair growing contest has participants not shaving at all for the month. Unlike Movember, No Shave November does not raise funds for testicular and prostate cancer research and allows participants to grow facial hair other than mustaches. The goal of No Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. As for No Shave November rules, men grow an entire beard and at the end of the November, they shave a unique mustache. With the money men and women usually spend on shaving and grooming, participants are encouraged to instead donate those funds to research organizations and groups that educate others about cancer prevention, saving lives, and aiding those fighting the battle. Movember: Movember started in Melbourne, Australia in 2004 where a group of 30 men organized an event and grew moustaches for 30 days in order to raise awareness for prostate cancer and depression in men. Later, they became known as the Movember Foundation charity. Since that time, Movember has raised over $299 million in global funds. In the US, Movember national partners include major partners Gillette and TOMS in addition to several supporting and promotional partners. Collectively, Movember partners support the global movement by generating awareness about men’s health, promoting the campaign and creating remarkable experiences for participants. What are the Movember Rules? Number one, shave clean on November 1st, you must start with a clean shaved face. Second, for the entire month of November, each “Mo Bro” must grow and groom a moustache. Third rule of Movember, you can’t let your mustache join with your sideburns, that’s considered a beard. Fourth, which goes along with the third rule, no joining the handlebars to your chin, that’s considered a goatee. And the last rule and most important rule in No Shave November, each man participating must conduct himself like a true gentleman. Estates of Green Trails has bi-weekly trash pick-up on Wednesdays and Saturdays by Waste Corporation of America (WCA) (Phone 281-368-8397). Should you be overlooked by WCA on a pickup day, please call WCA directly and register any complaints with Sterling ASI (Phone 281-491-0266). They will follow up with WCA about the problem. Holidays, which fall on our pickup days mean that trash will be picked up the next school service day. The following is a list of holidays observed by WCA Services: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Please have your trash ready for pickup by 7 AM on pickup days. Landscaping debris, such as large bags of grass clippings, tree branches/limbs, etc. will be picked up either day, but it must be carried to the end of your driveway and left there for pickup; you can bring these heavy items out the night before, but please not several days in advance of pickup. Estates of Green Trails own the Recreation Center at Shillington Drive and Fry Road. It consists of an Olympic-size swimming pool, totally reﬁnished in the spring of 2015 and two tennis courts, recently reﬁnished in 2015. Use of these facilities is allowed to all Estates of Green Trails residents in good standing who have paid their annual maintenance fee. Green Trails Section III residents in good standing with their homeowners association can also use these facilities. Only residents who have been issued Pool/Tennis Court Access Cards from Sterling ASI are admitted into the pool and allowed to use the tennis courts.

Recycling plays an important role in how we help to protect the environment. The recycling day for the neighborhood is on Wednesday. Have your recycling bin at the curb no later 7:00 AM. Any Estates of Green Trails or Green Trails Section III resident with a Pool/ Tennis Court Access Card can use the tennis courts. Tennis Court Hours: 7:30 AM until 10:00 PM. Rollerblades, skateboards or any other wheeled vehicles are not allowed on the courts any time.

The 10.75 mile, asphalt trail is available from dawn to dusk for walkers and bicyclists, foot-and non-motorized-wheel-trafﬁc. The trail runs from Highland Knolls at Fry Road through George Bush Park to Highway 6 then connects to Terry Hershey Park. (When all of this is completed, you will be able to walk/ bike to Terry Hershey Park (east of Hwy. 6) along this trail. Also look for the new trail connecting the trail behind the subdivision along the drainage canal to the new trail along Baker Road.

Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for up to one hour per week during the school day, during the school year. During those weekly visits mentors and students engage in a variety of activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. combat stress, TBI, chronic pain issues and military sexual trauma. Jacob led over 20 volunteers who spend 225+ hours on this project. In addition to being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, he has also successfully earned 38 merit badges, completed 162 hours of service, camped 126 nights and hiked over 230 miles. He held numerous leadership positions (Patrol Leader, Chaplin’s Aid, Instructor, Troop Guide, Assistant Patrol Leader) and he is currently the Troop 584 Senior Patrol Leader. He attended and staffed National Youth Leadership Training and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Jacob will be a senior at Seven Lakes High School in the fall and plans to attend college to pursue a career in medicine.

Sports BEAR CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH UPWARD BASKETBALL AND CHEERLEADING 2015-16

Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Early registration cost is $80 for Basketball and for Cheerleading until November 2nd. The cost after November 2nd is $90. This year the cost does include the basketball shorts or the cheer mock turtleneck for Cheer. They will have one hour of practices a week and on Saturdays, they will have a game for one hour beginning in January. Every practice and game takes place on our Campus. They will learn great new skills from encouraging coaches. Registration begins October 1st online. Each child needs to attend one evaluation session. Our first Evaluations will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, November 2nd, 3rd & 5th, between 6 and 7:30 PM and on Saturday, November 7th between 9:30 AM-12 Noon. January 9, 2016 The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through ﬁtness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. Registration opened September 15, 2015 for this new Houston running event. An anticipated 300 guests will be in attendance to raise money for The Brookwood Community’s ongoing training and outreach programs and to continue support for the “Center for Learning.” The Katy Wine Fest will celebrate wines from across the United States, including several Texas wineries. In total, more than 60 wines will be featured at this year’s Katy Wine Fest. Additionally, many of Katy’s ﬁnest eateries will offer light bites and delectable treats to event guests. No Label Brewery will also be onsite sampling different brews in the Beer Garden. The talented Chris Austin Martinez will provide the musical entertainment. Friday, December 11th and Saturday, December 12th Proceeds from the Christmas Home Tour help Child Advocates of Fort Bend (CAFB) advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children in this community. Through its two programs, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC), the agency touches the lives of more than 400 young victims each month. A Fort Bend holiday tradition, the Tour offers guests the opportunity to view beautifully decorated homes in Fort Bend County while helping to raise much needed funds to support CAFB’s programs serving abused and neglected children. “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love.
