LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE

Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

WEBSITE

Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM

1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street).

Hearthstone

NMLS#217251

2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize). 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position. 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts). GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Scouts COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL

Girl Scouts in Copper Creek Meadows Community have been having a great time at San Jacinto Council’s resident, day and twilight camps! Camp is a wonderful place to meet new friends and share Girl Scout traditions. Sailing at Camp Casa Mare, canoeing and swimming at Camp Agnes Arnold and horseback riding at Camp Misty Meadows are only some of the camp experiences girls in our Council can enjoy. “I can’t wait to get back” was one comment from a first time camper. Many of the day and twilight camps this year had a “safari” theme and might have included survival skills, archery, swimming, a cookout and maybe even a sleepover! Camp wouldn’t be camp without songs, crafts and games and special snacks like s’mores and banana boats! Soon it will be time for us to start anew Girl Scout year and also to welcome new Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place- and we have been doing it for over 100 years! Many things have changed since 1912 - Girl Scouts today are more likely to be building robots than ironing hair ribbons! - but our core values are strong and enduring. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 17 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scout programs are geared to their particular age levels and interests. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls! Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Older girls whose schedules do not allow for participation in a troop or group may still want to participate as “Juliettes” (individual Girl Scouts). We have many special interest groups for activities such as backpacking, archery, horseback riding and sailing. Our Council also has several choirs and a dance group, the Green Starlettes. San Jacinto Council also offers special programs and events and so does Area 4 (the portion of the Council, which includes Copper Creek Meadows Community). Copper Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residential areas for the elementary schools listed below and the corresponding middle and high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome! Our elementary schools are Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps, Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Hairgrove, Owens, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center. For information on the Girl Scout program, check out the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website (www.gssjc.org) or call 713-292-0300. For information on Copper Creek Meadows Community, contact Marlo Folwell-713-854-9426 or email marlo.folwell@c-a-m.com.

We are ALWAYS looking for adults to be troop leaders and volunteers. You don’t have to be Superwoman or Ranger Rick - you don’t even have to have children! You do have to be interested in working with girls, pass a background check and go through some training. Lots more training is available, but you only need a little to get started. We also need people with skills and special interests who might be willing to share them with your young neighbors. Sometimes we just need people who are willing to be there and decorate the cafeteria, hand out programs, make popcorn or measure the standing broad jump! We’d love to talk to you about volunteering!

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE

DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. 28

August 2015

DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today! Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org and a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information you need! Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.org and click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.

LOVING ARMS PET PACEMENT ANIMAL FOSTERS NEEDED

Summer is here, children are out of school. What better time to get involved with a rescue group and help a dog or cat in need? That’s what fostering an animal is all about. Fostering is an important step in the transition from shelter/street to “happy ever after.” Loving Arms Pet Placement is a fosterbased rescue for dogs and cats and is always in need of foster families. While fostering can be challenging, knowing you helped an animal when it most needed shelter and security and helped it find its forever home will give you endless joy. Can you handle puppies and kittens or only mature animals? Can you take more than one animal at once? PETS

Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he can run right back in at the first sign of danger! He would do best in a quiet household because of his dislike of loud or sudden noises and he would love to be an only cat. Benjamin is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and neutered. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.
