HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB WISHES YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
As the Holiday Season is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on those who have helped to shape Hearthstone Garden Club in a most significant way. We would like to congratulate our club for winning first place in the National Federation of Garden Clubs yearbook competition this past year under the direction of our former president, DeeAnn Schunneman. Hearthstone Garden Club has won many awards each year, but this is the first time for our yearbook. Hearthstone Garden Club’s Annual Holiday Auction was a great success. We thank all the members and vendors who graciously donated their time and auction items. We also recognize the value of those who graciously supported our community projects and scholarship program with their purchases at the auction. It was truly a wonderful evening enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who has helped to make Hearthstone Garden Club “The Best Little Garden Club in Texas” and we look forward to continuing our work within the community in the year to come. We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with peace and prosperity.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
Hearthstone Resident since 1976
The Foundation will kick off its fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret.) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling. Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school, and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq. A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials.

Tues. - Thurs. - 9am-7pm Fri. - 9am-5pm • Sat. - 9am-4pm
Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at marie@ thecfef.org or 281-807-3591.

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR
‘Tis the season for rejoicing in shining fashion! Our choir family had a wonderful opportunity to shine with its A Cappella choir on October 30th. Several choirs in the state of Texas were in attendance at Sam Houston State University in their Performing Arts Center for an imitational concert. Each choir had it’s own unique style and the evening was topped off by the college choirs delightful pieces. The solos and accompanists were an impressive touch and the crowd pleasing show closer was Queen’s “Somebody to Love.” It was an honor to be invited and we thank SHSU director Mr. Franklin for including our choir in this program. The women’s PJ party was a big success! Who doesn’t love hanging out with their besties in their comfy PJ’s? We thank Becks Prime for their generous donation, which allowed the girls to feast upon guacamole and salsa to their hearts content!

The men’s lock in was equally a great bonding experience. Chips and queso disappeared like magic! Thanks to the parents that helped by sending in snack foods, treats and their warm personalities as chaperones for our young men and women. WE LOVE OUR PARENT VOLUNTEERS! Our students push themselves vocally by competing against the finest high school singers as they attempt to move towards the Texas State choir. At this point in time, we would like to recognize those members that have joined the Regional choir: Trevor Reagor, Grace Bracher, Diana Luu, Taylor Shaunfield and Scott Johnson. Making Regional and moving on to Pre Area auditions are: Katie Ferrigan, Abi Amadin, Marguerite Lavin, Sarah McIntyre, Elyse White, Tate Brown, Evan Moynihan, John Rooney, Tyler Denton, Brandon Zachary, Lauren Lafferty, Jordan Svehla, Venessa Clarke, Alicia McCormick, Thomas Kang and Ronald Pabello. WAY TO GO EAGLES!!! Outstanding job, congratulations! Our year will culminate in a vocal extravaganza for the holiday season. The holiday concert will be December 11th in the school auditorium. Traditional Christmas will be the theme of affair and our students look so wonderful in their gowns and tuxedos. This delight for the soul in sound is one concert you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. We assure that you will return to the season uplifted with a song in your heart! Have a blessed season, enjoy those you love, treasure your moments and we will see you next year!

CY-FALLS VOLLEYBALL COACH CELEBRATES 500TH VICTORY

“It’s a huge milestone,” Stephenson said. “I’m very proud that each one of those has been with Cy-Falls. I’m proud of the coaching staff and the student athletes who have come through the program throughout these last 20 years, as well as the Cy-Falls administration and parents. Everyone has been so supportive and instrumental in helping make this possible.” Following the victory, her team surprised her with a “500 Wins” t-shirt and banner and campus athletic coordinator Kirk Eaton presented Stephenson with a commemorative “500 Wins” volleyball that was signed by the players and marked with the date and score of the milestone-clinching game. Stephenson said she was aware of the approaching 500th victory, but had kept it a secret from the team until later in the season. “When the secret got out, the team really rallied around that and put a lot of pressure on themselves to make sure they were a part of it,” she said. “That last game was a do-or-die situation; if it didn’t happen then, it would have to be next year. They pressed hard in that game to make sure they got the win.” Stephenson began coaching in 1980 upon graduating from college. She said her career has been filled with memorable achievements, none greater than winning the Class 5A state championship with the Lady Eagles in 2000 alongside current assistant coaches Pam McRae and Cary Stengler.

“That was a very special, driven and talented group and winning a state championship is pretty much the top moment in any coach’s career or life,” she said. “That’s the best memory of all amidst a lot of great memories. GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit held an investiture ceremony for our new leaders at the October service unit meeting and celebrated the birthday of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low (October 31st) with a special cake. We know that our new troops are holding investiture ceremonies for their girls and celebrating with families and friends.
Our fall service project this year was in support of Covenant House’s 22nd Annual Candlelight Vigil and Rally for Homeless Youth. Troops brought their donations of new and gently used clothing, especially coats, jackets and other cold weather gear, to our service unit meeting on November 13th. Thanks to Jerilyn Kortegast for coordinating this project.

We know lots of our troops attended the B.I.G. event, but so far we only have a picture of troop 16239. This “cover girl” troop picture also included Cadette Erin B. and Senior Juliette Kristina B. They certainly look as if they had a great day! January 11th – 13th is our Leader/Daughter weekend, when our leaders spend some special time with their OWN daughters! We’ll be back in the hill country and looking forward to crafts, campfire sing-alongs and the dutch oven cobbler cook-off, along with the always hilarious talent show. Hiking, horseback riding and a climbing wall may also be on the agenda for some of our group. We’ll hope it is warm enough to play in the river, but whatever the weather, we know we’ll have a great time! Shopping in Wimberley on the way home makes a great weekend even better! There are rumors that some of our leaders and daughters actually like that part best! Girl Scouting in the United States has been developing girls of courage, confidence and character since 1912. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. If you missed our Rally Nights in September, give us a call. It is never too late to join! The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/ uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour. org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.
