Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Hearthstone Garden Club Auction, “Wine and Wreaths,” a success and we look forward to continuing our work within the community in the year to come. We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with peace and prosperity.

Hannah Voitle from Sam Houston State University also received a $1,000 scholarship from the garden club. Hannah majors in Horticulture and minors in Agricultural Business. Hannah spent this past summer studying Viticulture and Enology in France. She was awarded a summer internship at a vineyard in southern France. The final $1,000 scholarship recipient this year is Cassandra Warren, a graduate student at Texas A&M University. Cassandra’s degree is in Horticulture, with a special study in pecans. As a Lloyd Noble Ag scholar, Cassandra shadowed Agricultural Consultants in north-central Texas and south central Oklahoma, as they dealt with farmers and the problems they currently face. Hearthstone Garden Club, established in 1978, strives to stimulate knowledge in gardening, to encourage the art of flower arranging and to encourage civic beautification. Since the beginning of the scholarship programs in 1998, the club has awarded a total of $57,500 to 57 deserving students. This has been made possible through the generous donations and support of the community. For more information, please contact Rhonda Derrick of the Scholarship Committee at tderrick@att.net.
HEARTHSTONE HOA
Please remember that sidewalks are primarily for pedestrians. If driving a golf cart or bike on a sidewalk, always yield to pedestrians. Everyone walking a dog is responsible for picking up “deposits” left by your pet, no matter where you are. The golf course is not appropriate for walking, jogging or exercising pets. This includes Club members. In addition to walking in the neighborhoods, the track at the park is a great place to walk. However, bicycles, golf carts and any other vehicles are never allowed on the path. If you walk your pet there, please bring along a pet waste bag, newspaper bag, etc., in case there are no supplies in the dispensers.

DANNHAUSES WIN HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB’S YARD OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Gary and Janet Dannhaus, winners of the Hearthstone Garden Club’s November Yard of the Month at 7122 Halfpenny. This is a beautiful yard with thick St. Augustine grass surrounded by beds anchored with a combination of ginger, pittosporum, crepe myrtle and ligustrum, with a variety of smaller coordinating plants such as agapanthus, nandina, foxtail ferns, pentas and Aztec grasses.
LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma. Nevertheless, if you lose or find a pet, the email list on the website has been very helpful in reuniting dogs and their families.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

that delighted all ages. Thanks to Truitt Middle School and Labay Middle School for joining our choir in their favorite fundraising venture of the school year. Diana Johnson and Laura Rooney manned the reins of this event and ran the silent auction like pros! The varied selection and beautiful baskets were plentiful and well received. Various vendors such as Pampered Chef, Academy Sports, Mr. Lavin and others donated items and cards. Themed baskets such as Movie night, dogs, car care and self pampering were a big hit! Heartfelt gratitude goes out to all our wonderful fans in the community that envelope our young men and women in their helpful and generous arms. Thanks to our booster club president, Hilary Bracher for an excellent job in emceeing the auction. Everyone seemed pleased with their won treasures. At this time we would like to recognize the students that auditioned for and qualified for the District choir. In no particular order congratulations go to: Kevin Guzman, Robert Newberry, David Moynihan, Kailyn Kolb, Rebecca Peter, Morgan Mayer, Karinna Lara, Vedika Khanna, Madison Suarez, Tyler Denton, Tate Brown, Grace Bracher, Cara Bacon, Marguerite Lavin, Sofia Nash, Evan Moynihan, Alicia McCormick, Diana Luu, Ryan Robbins, Elyse White and Taylor Shaunfield. Auditioning for and moving on to Regional Choir are: Elyse White, Taylor Shaunfield, Diana Luu, Alicia McCormick, Evan Moynihan, Sofia Nash, Marguerite Lavin, Kara Bacon, Tate Brown, Tyler Denton, Kailyn Kolb and David Moynihan. These students have worked very hard vocally and attained a level of excellence that is not reached by most. If you know them or see them at school or in the community, please congratulate them on their vocal accomplishment. Great Job!!! The Holiday Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 10th in the school auditorium. Festive holiday decor will add a flair to this international themed musical celebration. “Christmas around the World” will be a splendor for your eyes and ears... mark your calendars now so you won’t miss a note!

The students will wrap up their 2013 choir experience with a holiday party on the 12th from 6 PM - 9 PM in the teaching theatre and commons areas. It will be an occasion full of laughter and merriment to be remembered and treasured, especially for our seniors. This first half of our children’s school year is already packed with memories and pleasant silliness. We look forward to filling the second half with many more. Of course none of this would be possible without our amazing choral directors, booster club executive board, the booster club and our many volunteers. We hope your time that you share with your children in the choir is filled with warm blessings and happy hearts. Have a Merry Christmas and we will see you in 2014!!!

Teaching discipline & respect, one student at a time...
November also saw a chance for Girl Scout leaders to visit and learn from each other in a “café” event. Leaders have also been busy taking training classes and learning new skills. Those who attended the Council ETC (Every Thing Covered) may not actually have covered EVERYTHING... but there was certainly a lot to choose from! Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following elementary schools (and their corresponding middle and high schools): Wilson, Metcalf, Lieder, Tipps, Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting activities are open to our older Girl Scouts. We have riding and sailing programs, a JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery) program, dance and drill teams, choirs, backpacking groups and many other programs. Girls from troops 16464 and 16172 show HEART pillows they made for breast cancer patients as a project for the International Quilt festival.
COPPER CREEK MEADOWS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Creek Meadows Service Unit held a “Taste of Girl Scouting” event in October for new Girl Scouts. The girls attending made beaded bracelets and began to learn the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Older Girl Scouts helped to teach some favorite Girl Scout songs, like “Princess Pat” and “Yogi Bear.” The audience participated in telling a story about Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low Many thanks to all who helped with the event and all who attended! Our Leader/Daughter event took place early in November at Rocky River Ranch in Wimberley. Girls and their leader moms enjoyed some special time together in a variety of camp activities. The talent show and Dutch Oven cookoff are always popular events. Hiking, playing in the river and some time spent shopping in Wimberley helped round out the weekend.

LOCAL MENTORS NEEDED TO MENTOR ONE CHILD & CHANGE TWO LIVES!
CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.

GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus.
• New Puppy Training?
• Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST CRIME DURING HOLIDAYS

• Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you.

• When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.
NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS CAN BRING DANGER
The New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations can often be fraught with dangers to both people and property. If you plan to use fireworks, please do so in such a way that the debris does not find its way onto your neighbor’s roof or their yard or driveway. Exercise extreme caution so that you do not inadvertently set a neighbor’s home on fire. After you have finished with your fireworks display, clean up the mess so that it is not left as an eyesore for the neighbors to clean. Please confine fireworks to reasonable hours. Fireworks after 1 AM are annoying to most of your neighbors.
Hearthstone
If you have children, please closely supervise them. Each year at New Year’s and in July we read of children maimed or killed by fireworks. If you must use fireworks, exercise sober care and watch your children carefully. If you drink, don’t drive. The Sheriff’s Department and DPS will be conducting stepped up programs to lower or eliminate the incidents involving drunk drivers.
