LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE

Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB YARD OF MONTH WINNER

Congratulations to Gary and Rita Lindenberger at 7518 Holly Court Estates! Their yard has a wonderful variety of plantings that include a Crepe Myrtle, Sago Palms, two Oak trees, potato vines, periwinkles, begonias and crotons by the welcoming front door. SAVE THE DATE: The Christmas Holiday Decoration Contest Deadline is Monday, December 14th!

SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM

1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street). 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize). 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position. 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Where is one to find peace and joy? In a world that is filled with sadness, uncertainty, loneliness, and disappointment, often we are left asking, “Is there any hope?” Cornerstone Presbyterian Church’s desire is to proclaim that there is hope! And that hope is in Jesus Christ. Join us as we look into God’s word to learn more about the savior of the world. Visitors are welcome.

47+ YEARS EXPERIENCE

CCS FIRST GRADERS LEARN “PUMPKIN PATCH GOSPEL” “Farmer Frye” shared the gospel message with young students by using a pumpkin to illustrate sin, a clean heart and a new creation. The day after hearing this special parable, first grade classes enjoyed a fun field trip to Dewberry Farm. The best part of the day was a visit to the pumpkin patch so each child could pick out a pumpkin to bring home as a special reminder of the “Pumpkin Patch Gospel.”

Girl Scouts in Copper Creek Meadows Community have had a busy autumn! The Fall product sale was a success and we thank our family, friends and neighbors who have supported us! We would also like to thank Crystal Lawrenz and all the volunteers who made the program run smoothly this year. Our Girl Scouts have been taking advantage of the autumn weather to take field trips and learn about the outdoors. Troop 113017 made a trip to Dewberry Farms to enjoy the fall activities. Troop 113035 worked on their Hiker Badge at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. They also worked on the Letterboxer Badge and have been collecting books for Lowery Elementary. Troop 16369 hosted the Rally Night at Owens Elementary. While parents took part in a meeting, these Girl Scouts held a flag ceremony and taught the younger girls Girl Scout songs, played games and showed them what Girl Scouting is all about. Copper Creek Meadows Community is looking forward to a Leader-Daughter event in December and hoping to have another one in the spring. Many of our troops will be participating in holiday themed events and service projects. Troops may be attending a performance of “The Nutcracker,” making cards to deliver to a nursing home or collecting food or toiletries for the needy. The Girl Scout Christmas tree at the Museum of Natural Science has often displayed ornaments made by local troops and we expect that tradition will continue this year! On February 19th, we will be celebrating “World Thinking Day,” as we learn more about Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. Other activities are being planned for later in the year. This year’s Girl Scout Cookie Sale will begin on December 19th, so be on the lookout for Girl Scouts in your neighborhood! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. It is never too late to sign up! You may contact ccmregistrar@gmail.com for more information or go to the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website at www.gssjc.org. The Council phone number is 712-292-0300. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and develops personal fitness. Troop 573 is lead by our Youth Scouts with support from our Adult Volunteers. In addition to the weekly meetings, the Scouts in Troop 573 plan and organize monthly camping trips that focus on a variety of activities including hiking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding and more.

TROOP 1296 EAGLE SCOUT CANDIDATE DAWSON BENNETT

Troop 573 also provides support for the Cy-Fair Community by participating in Service Projects that are organized and executed by Scouts earning their Eagle Rank. Troop 573’s focus on the Scout has led to a long list of Eagle Scouts that have found success in education and careers thanks to their dedication the Scout Oath and to help people at all times. You can learn more about BSA Troop 573 by attending our Troop Meetings, online at www.troopmasterweb5.com/075636T or on Facebook at facebook. com/BSATroop573.

Eagle scout candidate Dawson Bennett raised funds to support the building of 100 “Whisper Phones” for use in Copeland Elementary school. As a former Copeland Colt, Dawson chose a project that would give back to a school that he says “taught him so much.” Whisper Phones are a literacy tool that allows a student to whisper into it when reading aloud, which then amplifies their voice, allowing the student to hear their sounds and words distinctly. It also decreases noise levels in the classroom! If you are interested in joining Boy Scouts, please call Troop 1296 Committee Chair Mr. David Covington, at 281-855-2239. Boy Scout Troop 1296 meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7 PM during the school year. Meetings include activities, skill sessions and planning for our monthly camp outs. Come join the fun!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club will conduct FREE vision screening to children from six months of age and older at the Jersey Village Holiday in the Park, to be held Sunday December 6th, from 1-4 PM at Clark Henry Park. This vision screening uses a unique special camera that takes a photo of the child’s eyes and within seconds relates a pass or refer status. Those with the refer status will need to have a professional eye examination at a local optometrist. Vision problems are the leading disability in children, who are unaware that they cannot see properly. They cannot compare their vision to others and vision problems do not cause pain or inflammation, so parents, teachers and caregivers are unaware that the child has visual difficulties. Eighty percent of learning is visual. The Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club has

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today! Questions?
