February 2016 HEARTHSTONE SECURITY
As Hearthstone residents know, we live in a relatively low crime area and within that area, our neighborhood is a pocket of even lower crime. However, for each person affected by crime, it is a very unsettling experience. For that reason, personal security and that of our neighbors is the highest priority we have. For many years, we have been fortunate to have a close, positive relationship with Harris County Constable Phil Camus and especially with the deputies who patrol Hearthstone. With the retirement of Constable Camus, Chief Deputy Ted Heap is running for election to the office of Constable for Precinct Five. The Board of Directors urges you to get out to vote in the March 1st Republican primary. The last day to register to vote is February 1st and early voting will be held February 16th-26th. We believe that the election of Ted Heap as Constable will be a major asset in continuing our close cooperative relationship with local law enforcement. Meanwhile, our most effective crime prevention tool is an alert and aware neighbor. Get to know all your neighbors. Be aware of any person or activity that “doesn’t seem right.” If you see something suspicious, follow up with your neighbor if appropriate, report it to the Constable’s office at 281-463-6666 or if there may be imminent criminal activity, call 911. The Constables don’t mind checking out activities that turn out to be no cause for alarm. But they need our vigilance to help them protect us. Remember, “If you see something - say something.” THE HEARTHSTONE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Paid Article

LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts).
When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to customercare@pcmius.com. The PCMI call center is manned by three people. The main number is 281870-0585. The hours are 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Thursday and 7 AM to 5 PM on Fridays.
SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street). 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize). 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.

We offer 2, 3 or 5 day classes for students, ages 18 months - 5 year olds. St. Cuthbert School is now offering a Bridge to Kindergarten class for the 2016-2017 school year. The development of the essential building blocks allows children to succeed at learning with greater ease and confidence; by helping them bridge the academic and social gaps necessary to be positive and productive classroom leaders. Our school hours are Monday-Thursday 9 AM-2 PM and Friday 9 AM-12 noon. The program provides a loving, Christian environment offering the children weekly chapel, as well as music/movement, library and computer classes. The 2016 University Interscholastic League Wrestling State Championships will take place at Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District’s Berry Center. After receiving feedback from stakeholders in the wrestling community, the UIL made the decision to change venues to better accommodate the growing sport. A second conference was added to boys and girls wrestling competition in 2013, doubling the number of qualifiers and matches. The 2013 Wrestling State Championships were expanded to three days and two locations. This marks the first time the UIL Wrestling State Championships will be held in the Houston area. The Curtis Culwell Center in Garland hosted the UIL Wrestling State Championships in 2014 and 2015. Prior to that, the UIL Wrestling State Championships had been held in Austin since 1999. “The Berry Center is an excellent venue that will allow the UIL more flexibility with the Wrestling State Tournament schedule to provide the best championship experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said. Boys and girls wrestling has been a UIL-sanctioned sport since 1999. The 2016 UIL Wrestling State Championships will be February 18th- 20th. “Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is extremely proud to partner with the University Interscholastic League to host the State Wrestling Tournament,” CypressFairbanks ISD Director of Athletics Ed Warken said. “We look forward to welcoming the student-athletes, their families and all wrestling fans to the beautiful Berry Center. It will serve as a great venue to highlight the efforts of so many kids and coaches and we are honored to be a part of this event.”

Did you know that Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is the top cookie program in the United States-and for the second year in a row? Cookie sales continue through March 20th and cookie booths will be starting up on February 12th. Sales of Girl Scout cookies help to fund individual troops and our Council programs and help to support our great camps we appreciate the support of our families, friends and neighbors! Girl Scouts involved in the annual Cookie Sale are also learning important skills that will last a lifetime, such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Our World Thinking Day event in February is going to have booths representing many different countries. So far, we have Vietnam, Madagascar, Puerto Rico, Japan, Finland, Germany, Ireland, France, China, Egypt and Canada signed up. World Thinking Day reminds us that Scouting is an international organization and helps us learn about our sister Scouts and Guides in other countries. We will be returning to Wimberley for a Leader/Daughter event in April and expect to enjoy horseback riding and rock climbing in addition to playing and kayaking in the river. The Talent show and Dutch Oven Cook-off are traditions at this event, but they are new and different every year! This is always a special opportunity for leaders to spend time with their OWN daughters. Did you know that there are two Little Free Libraries locally that were made by Girl Scouts? One is on the porch of the Copperfield Community Center (15409 Willow River Drive) and the other is inside the Langham Creek YMCA (16725 Longenbaugh). Troop 113035’s book collection drive for Lowery amassed over 600 books (their goal was 400!), so they are planning to donate some books to these libraries and they also filled up a Little Free Library next to the Lowery Elementary School. Daisy troop 113042 put together some “survival” bags, including different kinds of candy, for the CY-Fair ISD police dept. They visited the department in November and created a beautiful “thank you” sign for the department. Junior troop 16468 has been a very busy group of girls! They worked on the Junior First Aid badge at several troop meetings. Among other things, they learned basic CPR skills using dummies and learned what to put in first

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
Hearthstone
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. Sharing Our Story Lenten Program - All are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Lenten program, Sharing Our Story. The program will

This will be a meaningful service and everyone is invited to attend. Movie Night: Cornerstone United Methodist Church is hosting a night of free family fun! Join us on Saturday, February 20th (Snacks and fellowship 5-5:30 PM, movie starts at 5:30 PM) for a showing of Inside Out. Join Joy and the four other emotions running the Headquarters of 11-year-old Riley’s mind, as she strives to make sure Riley stays happy. Cornerstone United Methodist Church has partnered with Fiest Elementary School to provide assistance to disadvantaged students attending this elementary school located. More than 50% of the students attending the school are classified as “below the poverty level.” In order to assure that these students have the school supplies they need, the “Friends of Fiest” at Cornerstone have established a “Cornerstone Closet for Fiest.” This is an ongoing project whereby a stockpile of supplies is maintained so that when students deplete their initial supply and families cannot afford to replenish their needs, teachers can draw from the stockpile in the “Closet” to provide needed items. Currently the most needed items are composition books, pencils, glue sticks and facial tissue. Contributions can be dropped off in the church office or placed in the “Closet for Fiest” bend in the lobby of the worship center. All contributions are welcomed. Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert. Ramsey knows firsthand what financial peace means in his own life-living a true rags-to-riches, back-to-rags, back-to-riches story. Financial Peace University is a tool that supports churches by equipping them with a biblically-based accountability class that will train the congregation and community to manage their resources. Now Ramsey has come up with a practical tool to help parents teach their children to develop a healthy and responsible understanding of how money works entitled “Smart Money, Smart Kids.” Cornerstone United Methodist Church will offer this six-week course equipping parents to raise money-smart kids on Thursday nights at 7 PM from February 4th through March 10th. The cost is $70 (includes Smart Money and Smart Kids, workbook, online access to all video content including lessons and resources and “More is caught than taught” vinyl decal) and classes meet for one hour each week at the church.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through February. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

TUESDAY EVENING LADIES’ BIBLE STUDY AT LIVING WORD LUTHERAN CHURCH
The women’s group will begin a study His Name is Jesus, Life and Power in the Master’s Ministry by Pastor and Author Jack Hayford. His Name Is Jesus focuses on the life of Jesus as seen in Matthew, Mark and Luke. It shows how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecy and how to understand key parables and other teachings of Jesus. LOCAL MENTORS NEEDED TO MENTOR ONE CHILD & CHANGE TWO LIVES!
CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

SPECIAL CHEERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call our administrative assistant, Ms. Denise Pace, at 713-983-0075, for more information. A background check will be required of all individuals applying for a volunteer position at our facility.
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!

We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster families. Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster families socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible.
