LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.
WEBSITE
Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www. hearthstonehoa.org.
HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS
When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to customercare@ pcmi-us.com. The PCMI call center is manned by three people. The main number is 281870-0585. The hours are 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Thursday and 7 AM to 5 PM on Fridays.

SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street). 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize). 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position. 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts). GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.

www.dependablecomfort.com • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

The Smart TREE SERVICE
St. Cuthbert Episcopal School’s 2016-2017 registration will start on February 2nd at 8 AM and will continue each day during school hours until all of our spots are full. We offer 2, 3 or 5 day classes for students, ages 18 months - 5 year olds. St. Cuthbert School is now offering a Bridge to Kindergarten class for the 2016-2017 school year. Our bridge program is designed for children who are not quite ready for kindergarten. We recognize the need to engage children with summer or fall birthdays who are five years old, entering Kindergarten or First grade the following school year, however still need a bit more time before entering a rigorous learning environment. The development of the essential building blocks allows children to succeed at learning with greater ease and confidence; by helping them bridge the academic and social gaps necessary to be positive and productive classroom leaders. Our school hours are Monday-Thursday 9 AM-2 PM and Friday 9 AM-12 noon. The program provides a loving, Christian environment offering the children weekly chapel, as well as music/movement, library and computer classes. Our curriculum includes Handwriting Without Tears, reading and math. The program is open to all children, regardless of race, nationality or faith. St. Cuthbert School is NAEYC accredited. National Archery Champion visits Covenant Academy. Seventh grade students recently learned how to shoot arrows like a master archer… or rather a High Elf of Lothlorien. Having recently finished reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the students celebrated their accomplishment with a feast in CA’s wooded Preserve. Much like the Fellowship prepared to feast with the elves as a farewell to Lorien, CA’s fellowship of learners paused to celebrate their journey together as they look forward to reading the next great book. COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY - GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
Copper Creek Meadows Community held a “Cookie Kickoff” for the Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale. We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the “Lemonade” cookie and enjoyed “frosted lemonade.” We also learned fun facts about Girl Scout cookies, played games and did other activities to help develop skills such as goal planning and financial responsibility. The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale began on Dec. 19th and continues through March. Sales of Girl Scout Cookies provide funds for individual troop activities and help to support our Council camps and a variety of programs. Proceeds from the Cookie sale help to feed and shoe the horses, maintain the sailboats and canoes and buy archery equipment. We greatly appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors! Thank you! Information on Council Day and resident camps has been sent to registered girls, but you can also check on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. Troop 113017 celebrated the birthday of Juliette Gordon Low, our Founder, with a pajama party on Oct 31st. The pink hats and a variety of masks added to the fun. Troop 113035 participated in a painting badge workshop at Rice University. The workshop finished with a birthday celebration and cake for Juliette! Our Leader/Daughter holiday craft event was a lot of fun for those who attended. Thanks to all who assisted with the event! Our Spring Leader/Daughter event is coming up in April. This is always a popular event, with camping, shopping and all kinds of activities. In the past, activities have included riding, rock climbing, talent show and Dutch Oven Cook-off. Can’t wait to find out what is on the schedule this year.

Our World Thinking Day event is coming up in February, when we celebrate our membership in the international Scouting movement and learn about other countries. Last year, we had some very creative booths, decorations and swaps and we can’t wait to see what our troops will be doing this year! Second year Brownie Troop 16150 volunteered to decorate a float for the Great Pyrenees Rescue Group at the Brenham Christmas parade. The girls also made jingle sticks and walked with the group in the parade. These busy Brownies also joined with other Copper Creek Meadows troops who made cards, letters and drawings for soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Troops from our community also joined in creating ornaments for the Girl Scout Christmas tree at the Museum of Natural Science. This year’s theme was “Back to Nature.” Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. Older girls whose schedules may not allow for participation in a troop may join as “Juliettes” (individually registered girls). Copper Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome! Our elementary schools are Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. For more information, please contact Marlo Folwell 713-854-9426 (marlo.folwell@c-a-m.com). You can also contact Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council at 713-292-0300 or check the website at www.gssjc.org.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps
12
youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH
St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will hold their 15th annual Chili Cook-Off and Chili Bowl on Saturday, January 30th, from 12-2 PM. This event is open to the public. Come and sample our chilies and place your vote for your favorite and see if it becomes the grand prize winner. Then join the team for a fun game of football right on our front lawn. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. You are invited to the Ash Wednesday services at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on February 10th at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. All services have Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service is designed for children and their families. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which is dedicated to reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter.

It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

LOCAL MENTORS NEEDED TO MENTOR ONE CHILD & CHANGE TWO LIVES!
CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
