LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www. hearthstonehoa.org.

The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used for any purpose other than association business. Your address will not even be shared among group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined the email group, you do not need to do so again.
HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS
When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to customercare@pcmius.com. The PCMI call center is manned by three people. The main number is 281870-0585. The hours are 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Thursday and 7 AM to 5 PM on Fridays.
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street). 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize).
Hearthstone
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position. 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). FOURTH OF JULY TRIVIA
• The Declaration of Independence begins with the words “When in the course of human events.” • The Constitution is the legal framework of the United States. • Francis Scott Key wrote the words of the Star Spangled Banner. • The Liberty Bell acquired a crack on its very first ring. • The first United States flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes. • In 1942 Congress recognized the Pledge of Allegiance. • The first national capitol was located in Carpenters Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. • The anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is July 4, 1776. • The Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. • The official anniversary date of Flag Day is June 14th. • The first person to sign the Declaration of Independence was John Hancock. • Historians believe Betsy Ross sewed the first official American flag. • The oldest commissioned U.S. naval vessel is named ‘The Constitution.’ • The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are familiarly known as ‘The Bill of Rights.’ • John Hancock’s signature is largest on the Declaration of Independence. • The signing of the Declaration of Independence took until August 2, 1776. • The Statue of Liberty is 151 feet tall.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

CCS ATHLETE COMMITS TO PLAY BASEBALL AT LETOURNEAU Senior Ryan Gibbs will join the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets on the baseball field next year. Ryan was the starting catcher for the Warrior TAPPS 3A state championship run in 2014 earning honors in the division. Ryan’s tremendous work ethic helped to earn him the role of captain during his senior year where he led the Warriors into the playoffs at the 4A level. CCS Head Baseball Coach David Swan had this to say about Ryan: “He has been a cornerstone for our program as catcher for the past three seasons and a key factor in our success. He will certainly be missed, but we are very excited about his opportunity to play at the college level.” Photo by Rachael Lechman

create a positive learning environment for students. Each received the Law Enforcement Medal and certificate. They started a program known as “Thousand Guys in Ties” that has now grown to five CFISD campuses and more than 5,000 students. The program has stretched into a weeklong event at various campuses featuring outside speakers.
The Cy-Fair, Cypress Creek and Cypress Ridge high school yearbooks earned Featured recognition in the Yearbook Yearbook. Only 3 percent of yearbook staffs qualify for this distinction. The Cypress Lakes, Cypress Ranch and Cypress Woods high school yearbooks earned Honorable Mention recognition in the Yearbook Yearbook. Approximately 13 percent of yearbook staffs earn this distinction.
Chief Bragg was recognized on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Salute to Law Enforcement, a program that he started. The day allows various law enforcement agencies and the public to come together for a community event in which fallen officers are recognized, scholarships are awarded and demonstrations are presented. Over the last 20 years, the event has reached more than 50,000 members of the public, and each year more than 80 different agencies are represented. “These recipients are true patriots and heroes in our community,” said Chapter Vice President Tom Jackson. “They have profound impacts in our neighborhoods and on our children. They make things better for everyone around them, and that’s exactly the spirit that the leaders, soldiers, merchants and laymen of the American Revolution would have appreciated.”

BOARD APPROVES CONTINUATION OF RESIDENCE HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS
The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees approved a resolution to continue the residence homestead exemptions for CFISD residents for the 2015 tax year during the regularly scheduled Board meeting on May 11th. CFISD is among a select group of Houston-area school districts that offer a 20-percent Local Optional Homestead Exemption to all resident homeowners. Coupled with a state-mandated $15,000 homestead exemption, CFISD residents pay less per year than residents of most neighboring districts on homes of the same value.
The district also offers local exemptions of $15,000 a piece for both property owners who are age 65 or older or disabled. These residents qualify for an additional $10,000 state-mandated exemption.

Many students proudly wore their letter jacket before school’s end and underclassmen will continue to sport them next school year. The successful events just kept rolling. The lock-ins are always a great time with laughter filling the air. Pop show, “One hit Wonders,” pleased and delighted the audience of all ages. The costumes, choreography and talent shined throughout the acts from beginning to end. Fundraising helped support efforts and taught the students that if you work hard, you can play hard and they did play! Thanks to Tonya McLaughlin and Julie Mayer for their flawless choir banquet endeavor in making the trip “All Around the World” a reality for our students. Thanks go out too to their tireless minions! We say farewell to our seniors as they sang their final notes as students on the auditorium stage. Tears flowed and hugs all around as memories of high school are cemented. As part of the end of the school year performance, two students, voted on, are awarded scholarships from the Choir Board based on merit. The Music scholarship was awarded to Diana Luu and the Academic scholarship went to Tyler Denton. Congratulations to these exceptional students, as well as the entire class of 2015! We wish you much happiness in your life’s journey! It takes a strong engine to drive this choir’s adventures. That engine, the executive board, bids a warm and sincere adieu to our President, Hillary Bracher and her ever supportive husband Jimmy. Through the years they have attended banquets, danced/laughed alongside the students, scooped countless bowls of ice cream, carried power washers to car washes, sold chocolate, served spaghetti and barbecue, ideas... the list of tireless participation goes on. After two students raised through the choir, they have become a standard presence that will be greatly missed. Your volunteer hours have been many and appreciated. Our students are better people due to your leadership. Thank you.

And as always, keep a song in your heart!

The butterflies made from pool noodle sections and tissue paper by troop 16462 and the balloon bumblebees made by troop 16320 were ones we particularly noticed. There were lots of others to look at, also - we have some very creative and artistic girls in our Community!

troops! As each troop was announced, one of the leaders told about the troop’s activities during the year. Service projects and cookie sales, (some service projects INCLUDED cookies or were funded by cookie sales), field trips and campouts, participation in Council and Copper Creek Meadows Community events were only a few of the things mentioned. Girl Scouts are active girls! Troop 16465 bridged from Brownie to Junior Girl Scouts, after a very busy year! Their most recent activity was “camping in space” at the Johnson Space Center. Their visit included Mission Control, Rocket Park and the training center and all the fun of a sleepover. Members of the troop are Kerrigan Abner, Tristan Chambers, Caroline Deputy, Carter Green, Alyssa Laich, Jaydah Mora, Kiran Nath, Annie Patrick and Mia Walther. Cadette troop 16435 used cookie booth donation funds to purchase and deliver Girl Scout Cookies to Casa Esperanza de los Ninos. They also toured the offices and learned about the children they help. Troop 113046 sent a no-sew blanket and a Girl Scout Build-A-Bear to a young girl with Stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer in Ohio. Troop 16468 members have been earning the Independence Badge and showing their increasing maturity with a variety of activities. They have been discussing bad habits and resolving to break them; learning how to separate laundry and getting other tips for washing clothes and have been learning to help around the house (this included fixing a leaky faucet). The girls also went shopping WITH a Girl Scout buddy (without their parents) to buy 2-3 items. This helped them to learn about budgeting and making choices.

Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

CORNERSTONE UMC LAUNCHES SUMMER SHOE DRIVE!
Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. You can bring your donations by MondayThursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church office to schedule a time to pick up the shoes. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Contact the Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas office today, 713-682-4500, to find out about opportunities near you. With trainings for the fall semester beginning as early as September, start making a difference today.
Information about the Volunteer Guild can also be found on the Pearl’s website at www.pearlmfa.org under the Guild page.

CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

SPECIAL CHEERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call our administrative assistant, Ms. Denise Pace, at 713-983-0075, for more information. A background check will be required of all individuals applying for a volunteer position at our facility.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the
36
friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today! Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org and a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information you need! Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.org and click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

Summer is here, children are out of school. What better time to get involved with a rescue group and help a dog or cat in need? That’s what fostering an animal is all about. Fostering is an important step in the transition from shelter/street to “happy ever after.” Loving Arms Pet Placement is a fosterbased rescue for dogs and cats and is always in need of foster families. While fostering can be challenging, knowing you helped an animal when it most needed shelter and security and helped it find its forever home will give you endless joy. Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in what capacity you can help. Can your home only accommodate small animals or can you foster big dogs? Can you handle puppies and kittens or only mature animals? Can you take more than one animal at once? Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement. com or visit us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529 each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.
