Huey and Susan Smith have landscaped a large corner yard with tropical and native plants. A border of red and white begonias frame the house and visually connect an oak tree with shade plantings to full sun yellow Esperanza nestled under palm trees that anchor the corner. The yard has a beautiful display of seasonal fall flowers and foliage.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Father and Son Raise Flags Each Weekday at CCS Michael Shassere and his son, Nicolas, began raising the American, Texas and Christian flags at CCS each weekday morning at the beginning of last year, when Nicolas needed a service project for Cub Scouts. Mr. Shassere writes, “Nicolas enjoyed this so much that he asked Elementary Principal Mr. White if this could be ‘our service to CCS.’ As we all know, parents are rushed in the mornings getting children ready for school, carpooling and off to class. With this project, Nicolas and I enjoy focused father-son time, sharing in the fact that even such a small act is an act of selflessness and as such, honors God, our country, our state and all the staff at CCS.” Cy-Christian Students JAM to Set Record Students and teachers at Cypress Christian School - along with children and adults from around the country - took a one minute fitness break to participate in the first ever JAM World Record 2012. It was a quick, easy and FUN routine for students of all ages and abilities. This national initiative

Joining the tournament for the first time this year will be two teams from outside the Houston area. “A team from Crowley and one from South Grand Prairie will be traveling to Houston for the event,” said Teresa Hull, event co-chair. “This is so exciting because it means that word has gotten out about the high level of organization and quality of our tournament. This will help us continue to build state recognition and gives us great potential to grow,” she said. The tournament was started by community member Eric Burg and modeled after an extremely successful tournament held in Pasadena. Burg, who played basketball in Cy Fair ISD, wanted a way to showcase the talent and facilities in Cy-Fair ISD and the tournament grew from there. In a nail biter championship game between Klein and Cypress Falls last year, Klein pulled ahead in the last moment of the game and won the tournament. “These games are so fun to watch,” said Teresa. “We are hoping to attract many spectators to cheer for the kids since ticket prices are so reasonable (just $2 for students and $3 for adults). We want a lot seats in the seats!” she said. It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull.

SALUTE TO OUR HEROES CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HONORS MILITARY HEROES
February 9, 2013 The Foundation will kick off it’s fifth “Salute to Our Heroes” event on February 9, 2013 at the Omni Hotel Westside Houston. “Salute to Our Heroes” honors the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event go to an endowment enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. The event will be generously underwritten by Earthcare Management and Kodiak Gas Services, as the Missing Man Underwriters. The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will be the Major General Sponsor. This year our guest speaker is Steve Russell. LTC Steve Russell (Ret) commanded the central unit responsible in the hunt and capture of Saddam Hussein. Through leadership and joint efforts across multiple teams, a large organization worked effectively to capture one of the world’s most notorious criminals. Russell is an American Hero. His proven leadership and problemresolution techniques engage audiences through his storytelling. Salute to Our Heroes has two purposes. First, to give tribute to our heroes soldiers serving now, veterans and those who have been wounded or killed in action. We want to honor those who have served their country. The second purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Cy-Fair ISD students. Each year we give three scholarships per Cy-Fair ISD high school and the number of high schools is growing. It has been a challenge keeping up with the demand, but CFEF is dedicated to this mission. The inaugural event honors Jersey Village High School graduate 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, who was killed Dec. 20, 2007 while serving his country in Iraq.

A CFEF endowment was established in Jeremy’s memory by an anonymous donor. Last year the 1st Lieutenant Jeremy Ray Community Service and Peace Award was presented to Klein Funeral Homes & Memorials. Following tradition, the event will have the Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony. The table will have empty table settings with chairs leaning up against the table as though saved for someone. The table settings have a single red rose displayed in a vase in reminder of the bloodshed for our country and the vase was tied with a red ribbon - a symbol of the continued pledge to shed blood for our country. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is a reminder of the bitterness of the loss of comrades in arms; a bowl of salt to symbolize the tears shed by family members of lost loved ones and glasses turned upside down indicate no one will sit there. Last year’s ceremony was performed by the 75th Army Division Honor Guard and was proceeded by Taps performed by William Veenstra, Cy-Fair High School Senior. For more information on the 2013 event please contact Marie Holmes at 281807-3591 or marie@thecfef.org (email).

CFISD SCHOOLS EARN TEXAS HONORS CIRCLE AWARDS
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and 30 of its schools were honored as recipients of the Texas Comptroller’s 2012 Texas Honors Circle Award, recognizing schools and districts that are achieving academic success through cost-effective operations. Award recipients achieved strong academic performance while spending relatively little compared to their peers.

Only 329 school campuses statewide received this distinction for high rankings in the 2012 Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), meaning CFISD accounted for 9.1 percent of all Honors Circle campuses statewide. CFISD was one of only 43 Texas districts to earn the five-star rating from the office of Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller, for academic and financial performance. A five-star rating reflects the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending. Elementary campuses receiving the award achieved a five-star FAST rating, while middle and high-school campuses tapped for the honor achieved at least a 4.5-star FAST rating. Go to www.cfisd.net/newsmedia/ press/2012/0925circle.htm to see a list of the recognized schools.

Three high school bands and three middle school bands have been selected as Mark of Excellence winners by the Foundation of Music Education. CFISD BANDS EARN MARKS OF EXCELLENCE FROM FOUNDATION OF MUSIC EDUCATION
All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a classroom, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is so fortunate to be able to draw from such a great diversity of skills and knowledge in our community. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These jewels in our district give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. If you are interested in being involved in Cy-Fair schools as a volunteer and making a difference or would like more information, please contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at, 281-894-3950. Cy-Fair ISD & Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) November and December 2012 Events for our Treasured Volunteers: November 8th - VIPS General Meeting - 9:30 AM to 12 PM, Berry Center. Open to all CFISD volunteers, parents, staff and community members. November 27th - PIE Mentor Training - 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, Berry Center. Training for individuals committed to serve as a role model and friend to CFISD students. Cypress UMC Goes Back to School A Church’s Challenge to Volunteer Not content with giving $8,000 to a local elementary school last February, the members of Cypress UMC are now volunteering hundreds of hours on CFISD campuses. The congregation was challenged by their senior pastor, Jerome Brimmage, to volunteer a total of 2,000 hours within ninety days.
In addition to volunteering on various campuses, Cypress UMC has adopted a second school, Millsap Elementary. The church previously adopted Adam Elementary in the spring of 2011. As the beginning of school approached, the church donated, delivered and organized enough school supplies in August for 250 students, to be split between Millsap and Adam.

Ars Lyrica presents ‘Pypeth the Watche!’ - 3 PM, Tuesday, November 13, 2012. During the Renaissance and for the next few centuries, the Stadtpfeifer (or “Wait” in England and “Piffaro” in Italy) bands were musical watchmen who proved their watchfulness by piping loudly all over cities during the night, waking residents to announce that all was well. In honor of this little-known (but deeply influential) renaissance Stadtpfeifer tradition, the Shepherd School Crumhorn Collective will present a lively program of German, English, Flemish and French polyphony and dance music, written by and for 16th century civic minstrels. Tickets: $6 - $12. All Children’s Series concerts are free and no tickets are distributed.

Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company 2012-2013 Season
Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed. November 29-December 15, 2012, (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday). All performances begin at 8 pm. Price- $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Local Mentors Needed to Mentor One Child & Change Two lives!
CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.
