HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB YARD OF THE MONTH

Vickie Menard at 7310 Cart Gate has received the Hearthstone Garden Club’s October Yard of the Month. Vickie’s lot has a wonderful variety of plantings that consist of foxtail ferns, dianella, iris, bougainvillea, hibiscus, Cuban gold duranta, cordyline red sister, super blue liriope, coppertone loquats, dwarf oleander and the pygmy date palms. Congratulations again Vickie! The Hearthstone Garden Club would also like to welcome all residents to join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, November 17th at 7 PM in the Hearthstone Country Club Ladies locker room. Our guest speaker will be Ann Wheeler, owner of Log House Herbs and consultant of culinary and ornamental herbs to Arbor Gate. She will talk about “Cool Season Plants and Herbs.” We look forward to seeing everyone there!

NATIONAL ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH

November has been designated National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and it is about time we recognize the 5 million Americans living with this disease and the 10 million family caregivers that make it possible. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year. In support of families everywhere who are fighting this disease, consider stepping in and helping out by becoming an advocate, making a donation to Alzheimer’s research or by offering support to a patient or family caregiver. LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE

Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

WEBSITE

Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www. hearthstonehoa.org.

HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS

Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists” on the opening page. You will be automatically added to the email group. This group will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to members between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to more than one email address, just register again with each address you want included in the group. The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used for any purpose other than association business. Your address will not even be shared among group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined the email group, you do not need to do so again.

HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS

SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM

1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street). 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize). 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position. 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts).

When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to customercare@pcmius.com.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Copper Creek Meadows Community invited troops at all levels to send representatives to our first Girl Planning Board meeting for the year. Girls were asked to present their ideas for events they would like to see held by our Community. They had lots of great ideas! Thank you to all the girls who attended for their suggestions. Girl planning is an important aspect of Girl Scouting and one that began with our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, back in 1912. Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday was on October 31st and many troops celebrate that day with a birthday party or other special event in her honor. A Brownie Try-it dance workshop was hosted by two Cadette Girl Scouts from troop 14289 in October. The Cadettes are members of the Girl Scout Green Starlettes dance and drill team. They held the event as part of their Silver Award project. They will be purchasing new toys for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. Troop 113017 attended the Compassion Experience at Copperfield Church. Using iPod and head sets, the girls were able to participate in an interactive journey through the daily lives of children in the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Uganda and India This helped them to experience other cultures and better understand the impact of poverty in the developing world. The junior “Flowers” badge workshop held at the LSCLone Star College in October attracted area Girl Scouts to learn more about this subject. Brownie Girl Scouts will have their chance at the “Brownie Bugs” Badge workshop scheduled in November. Troop 113046 enjoyed a visit to Dewberry Farms and a climbing web, among other activities. Junior troop 16468 completed their award project to prime and paint the recycling barrels at Birkes Elementary and presented the finished barrels to their principal. They would like to thank Home Depot for the donation of paint. These busy Girl Scouts are now working on learning to cut out and sew, for their NEXT project! Leaders and their daughters will be able to have a special time together at our Leader/Daughter event in December, This event will be local, but we are planning a return to Wimberley in the spring! Many thanks to all who helped to make our fall product sale a success! We really appreciate the support of our friends, family and neighbors! If you missed our Rally Nights, it is never too late to become a Girl Scout! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. You can check out the Council website at www.gssjc.org. You can also contact the Copper Creek Meadows registrar at ccmregistrar@gmail.com.

Bible Studies LIVING THE PROMISE BIBLE STUDY

Everyone's got an idea of how to sell a house – but when it comes to impressing potential buyers, staging your home may be the most important thing you can do. If you're thinking about selling your home this year, read eight tips on preparing your home for sale. Cut the clutter. Your personal items will distract buyers, so put them out of sight. Extra furniture makes your house seem crowded so store anything you can temporarily live without. Keep in mind that buyers will be looking in your closets, so consider renting a storage unit if you have lots of knickknacks or furniture that needs put away. Clean, clean, clean. Your bathrooms and kitchen should sparkle like new, even if they're not. Shine your sink and pay attention to glass shower doors and counter tops. Repaint the walls. A neutral paint color helps potential buyers imagine themselves living in your house. Give your bathroom the hotel treatment. Make sure your personal grooming items are out of sight, then give your bathroom a warm and inviting feel by putting out a stack of fluffy towels and a new bar of soap. Freshen up your fireplace. Clean off any visible soot. Replace or repaint your fireplace screen if it needs it, and paint or polish the bricks. Update your kitchen cabinets. Re-stain them instead of replacing if the color is outdated. Add some new hardware to your cabinets and your kitchen will look fabulous for less. Consider replacing your kitchen appliances. Studies show that new appliances make a big impact on buyers, so you may want to replace them while you’re giving your kitchen a makeover. Stage your home for the sale. Just like in the bathroom, make the rest of your home seem inviting yet neutral. Add a few vases of fresh flowers in the living room and bathroom. Invest in luxurious bedding for all the bedrooms and accent pillows in the living room.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683 or email at tarar@cypressassistance.org. For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries, Food Pantry requests and a detailed description of volunteer opportunities, please see our web site, www.cypressassistance.org.

LOCAL MENTORS NEEDED TO MENTOR ONE CHILD & CHANGE TWO LIVES!

281-856-7171

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with Doctor Supervised hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org. Boarding & Day Care
