BOARD MEETING

Board Meetings are now bi-monthly, usually on the 3rd Wednesday at 7:00 PM. Hearthstone Country Club.

COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE

The fall community garage sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 17th. Anyone wishing to participate should gather items for sale and plan to set up in your garage or driveway on that date. Garage sales are not permitted on days other than those designated in April and October (usually the 3rd Saturday). Check upcoming newsletters and the website (www.hearthstonehoa.org) for details of events and important community information. Don’t forget to register on the web site so you will be part of the email alerts group.

LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE

Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma.

WEBSITE

Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www. hearthstonehoa.org.

HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS

Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists” on the opening page. You will be automatically added to the email group. This group will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to members between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to more than one email address, just register again with each address you want included in the group. The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used for any purpose other than association business. Your address will not even be shared among group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined the email group, you do not need to do so again.

SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM

1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone you do not recognize on your street). 2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you don’t recognize). 3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at home. 4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position. 5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch the bad guys. 6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town. 7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home. Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors. 8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age, they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there (my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have them call the constable’s office. 9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them, the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision. 10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight (covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count). Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts). GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

Girl Scouts from Copper Creek Meadows have been enjoying all kinds of summer activities. Girl Scout Junior Troop 16468 from Birkes Elementary school has been having an especially busy summer. The girls attended the Bull’s Eye Resident camp and also the Girl Scout Day Camp held at the Houston Farm and Ranch Club. They also enjoyed a night of roller skating and a troop circus visit to the Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey Circus. A “Pottery Fun” workshop was an opportunity to explore a new art form. The girls finished off their troop summer fun with a Space Center Camp-In. Now that school has started, they will be working on Journey project priming and painting metal trash containers at Birkes Elementary. It sounds like these very active and enthusiastic Girl Scouts will be adding quite a collection of patches to their vests and sashes! Many thanks to all those volunteers, Program Aides and Camp Aides who helped to make the Jersey Village Twilight Camp a success! Copper Creek Meadows Community is a part of the Cy-Fair East, Region Four area. The region has a Rallyhood site and Facebook page for Cadette through Ambassador Girl Scouts to provide additional opportunities for our older girls. Check with your troop leader for more information. Cadette Girl Scouts in Area Four will be planning and hosting a Brownie Quest Journey workshop in November in order to earn their Leadership in Action award. Troop 16399 has had several projects to raise funds for the Houston SPCA as they work toward achieving their Bronze Award. Troop 16503 planned their year of events and ideas at their first troop meeting for the new school year. They are also planning to start work on their Bronze Award. Copper Creek Meadows Community already has a Leader/Daughter event on the schedule for December 5th. This will be held locally. Be on the lookout for more information!

LAKELAND

Multi-Million Dollar Producer

“Helping Families Move Through Life” Our Fall Product sale began on September 11th. In person order taking continues through October 4th. Girls can continue to sell online until October 25th through the girls’ online storefront. Three new products this year are Black Forest Trail Mix, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels and Honey Mustard Pretzel Mix. Leaders who attended our community summit meeting in September had a chance to sample all those delicious treats. Everyone agreed it was a great incentive for coming to the meeting! Thanks to Crystal Lawrenz for serving as our Fall Product Manager! Copper Creek Meadows Community would like to thank Andrel Bridgewater, Jennifer Aldaco and all those involved in our Rally and other recruitment efforts. We especially thank those Girl Scout troops and their leaders who provided activities (and a chance to see what Girl Scouts do!) at our Rally nights. Our Rally Nights have been continuing throughout September and the first week of October. We have been forming new troops and placing girls in existing troops. If you were unable to attend one of the Rally Nights, it is not too late to sign up! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Copper Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle and high schools. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Older girls whose schedules do not allow for participation in a troop or group may register as “Juliettes” or “individually registered girls.” Don’t forget that we always need leaders and other adult volunteers! We can’t have Girl Scout troops without them. You don’t need to be a super hero or a park ranger- you don’t even have to have children! You do need to have an interest in working with girls, pass a background check and take some training. Only a little is required to get started, but a lot more is available when you are ready for it. Please contact Marlo Folwell - 713-854-9426 (marlo.folwell@c-a-m.com for more information. You may also check out the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, www.gssjc.org or call the Council office at 713-292-0300.

CY-FALLS STUDENT JOSH GILLIAM OF TROOP 202 EARNS EAGLE SCOUT AWARD

On Sunday, July 19th, Josh Gilliam, son of Jim & Pam Gilliam of Copperfield, earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award. Josh is a member of Troop 202, a troop sponsored by Middlegate Village Homeowner’s Association. Troop 202 meets regularly on Mondays at 7 PM at Copperfield Church. For his Eagle project and at the recommendation given by Josh’s church - Copperfield Church, Josh chose to build a work table/cabinet for the church staff’s resource room. The cabinet was used to replace a limited, portable 6’ table. The cabinet was constructed of ¾” oak ply-wood with an attractive laminate countertop. The bottom consisted of six cubby-hole shelves (3 in front and back) which will be used for storage. Josh used his funds to purchase the materials from Home Depot. With the help of adult and youth volunteers from Troop 202, as well as scout friends from other troops, Josh organized the crew for the building and installation of the work table/cabinet. Upon being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, Josh has thus-far successfully earned 32 merit badges, completed NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), held numerous leadership positions in Troop 202 including Senior Patrol Leader in 2013, participated in three High Adventure trips including Florida Sea Base (2013), Chisolm Trail (2013) and Philmont (2014) and camped with his troop on countless weekends. Josh, 16 years old and in 11th grade, is an outstanding percussionist and a proud member of the CyFalls High School Golden Eagle Marching Band and Drumline! After high school, he plans to pursue music as a profession. His dream is to become successful percussionist with a Drum Corp or large symphony orchestra.

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATER CO. MAINSTAGE SEASON - 2015

Special matinee October 25th at 3 PM and Pay-What-You-Can night on October 26th at 8 PM. Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely revamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. The show was one of Mildred’s Umbrella’s earliest productions and was originally staged by the company in 2004. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOSPICE CARE (CYPRESS AREA)

CY-FAIR VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Volunteers are the Heart of Hospice, they are a vital part of the hospice team. What volunteers can do to show that they care is everything from providing caregiver relief, being the friendly visitor with the smile, holding someone’s hand, providing that extra loving care and being a good listener. Volunteering can include music or pet therapy and much much more.

The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department provides fire, rescue and EMS services to 156 square miles of Northwest Harris County for the residents of Harris County Emergency Service District #9. By operating from 12 community based volunteer fire stations we are able to quickly and efficiently respond to help our neighbors in times of emergency. For more information on the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department or on how you can join the other 350 volunteers of our Department and be one of Cy-Fair’s bravest, call us at 281-656-3840 or visit us on the web at www.cyfairvfd.org.

All those interested in volunteering, please contact Adrienne Harris at adharris@odyshealth.com or 281-463-3697 (VistaCare).

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

Our facility is unique in that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call our administrative assistant, Ms. Denise Pace, at 713-983-0075, for more information. A background check will be required of all individuals applying for a volunteer position at our facility.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE

DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes. DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally. If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today! Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org and a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information you need! Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.org and click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.
