Cinco Ranch High School Senior and Robotics team President, Elizabeth Waters with her FIRST Robotics Competition Dean’s List Finalist Award.
ELIZABETH WATERS NAMED FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION “DEAN’S LIST” FINALIST AWARD WINNER
Cinco Ranch High School Senior and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 624 “CRyptonite” Student President Elizabeth Waters won the FRC Dean’s List Finalist award at the Lone Star Regional Qualifying Tournament held in Houston on April 6th - 7th. She vied with Dean’s List Award Finalists from around the world for a Dean’s List Award at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship Event in St. Louis on April 25th – 28th. This year, under Elizabeth’s continued leadership, the Team CRyptonite has nearly doubled its membership, won the Bayou Regional Qualifying Tournament in New Orleans in March and were Finalists at the Lone Star Regional Qualifying Tournament. The team won many other awards at the two tournaments and are headed to the Championship Event in St. Louis. Elizabeth was instrumental in furthering CRyptonite’s commitment to expanding FIRST robotics in the community. This year, under her leadership, the team increased the number of junior high FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics teams they coach to three: two at Cinco Ranch JH and one at Beck JH. Elizabeth also personally convinced Stratford High School to start a new FRC team at the school. Team CRyptonite mentored that team this year, providing them with hands-on support. Academically, Elizabeth is near the top of her class at Cinco Ranch HS. She is a National Honor Society member, a member of Mu Alpha Theta (Math Club) and was a Student Council member. She has had summer intern positions at the University of Texas Satellite Design Lab and Noble Plastics. Elizabeth plans on majoring in Mechanical Engineering and will attend Georgia Tech where she has been awarded the Provost Scholarship.

“We are thrilled to announce the development of Houston’s Hot Summer Break,” said Skip Wagner, president of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “Houstonians love to celebrate and this festival offers them a really cool way to do so. We look forward to making it one of the best and most successful events of its kind, offering attendees the ability to get away without going away!” Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar and coffee shop. Net proceeds generated from Houston’s Hot Summer Break will directly benefit the mission of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed approximately $283 million to the youth of Texas.

FORT BEND COUNTY LIBRARIES GO GREEN, SAVE MONEY Fort Bend County Libraries is saving county taxpayers’ money by using email and telephone notifications rather than mailing out letters. Patrons may receive notices by email, telephone or text message about books they have requested or that are overdue. By sending out notices electronically, the library saves money on the costs of paper, printing and postage, which helps preserve the environment as well. Library patrons can manage their online library account by clicking on “My Account on the library’s webpage. To verify or add a telephone or email account to the record, simply go to “Contact Information and Preferences, then “Preference for receiving library notices and select “email address, “telephone or “TXT messaging from the drop-down list to choose the format by which library information notices should be received. Patrons who opt to receive text messages will need to ensure that their cell phone number is included on their library record and indicate which cell phone provider they use by selecting a choice from the drop-down menu. Standard text-messaging rates apply, based on the patron’s cell-phone plan.

Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community servicehours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.
Standup for KidS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www. standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

AN ART VOlUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT HOUsTON APHAsIA REcOVERY cENTER
Stephanie Schmadeke, Director of the Houston Aphasia Recovery Center (HARC), a not for profit facility which helps people recover from brain injury, is looking for volunteers to teach painting or drawing lessons to their clients. Their location is 6260 Westpark (in the West Loop/SW Freeway area). This would be perfect for someone who has time and a calling to help people or for students who are looking for community service and teaching experience. Even if you are new to art, you would have something to offer. Just give them what you know. That will be more than enough. (Paint mixing, pallets, brush choices, hand positions, perspective, shading, blending, etc.) All would be a great help to someone recovering from Aphasia. The times/days/number of students are all flexible. For more information, contact Stephanie Schmadeke, 713-628-9973 or to learn more about Aphasia, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphasia.

Play dates will be held on Saturdays and an occasional mom’s night on a weeknight.
