HARRIS COUNTY ESD 48 FIRE DEPARTMENT INTRODUCTION
Brand new badge, same great people. Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department was formed on August 17, 2015 and assumed the role of emergency service provider in the territory covered by Emergency Services District #48 (ESD 48). “We are very proud of the fact that almost 95% of the active personnel from the previous fire department chose to join us creating a ‘Fire Department of the future,’” said Fire Chief Hevey. HCESD 48 Fire Department is a true combination fire department staffed 24/7 with full-time, part-time and volunteer personnel. In addition to answering the call when and emergency happens, we are very focused on preventing emergencies like never before. If there is a neighborhood, business, church or other organization willing to learn, we will bring out our best and train any size group in order to make our community a safer place for all our citizens. If we can be of assistance or you would like to schedule an educational event, please call our offices at 281-578-5967 (non-emergency) during business hours or you can contact our outreach team anytime at communityteam@hcesd48.org or through our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HCESD48FD. If you would like more information about this topic, please contact Simon VanDyk at 281-578-2518 or email at simon.vandyk@hcesd48.org.
SAINT PATRICK’S DAY
Saint Patrick’s Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick’s Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide. Why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that it is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins. In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick’s Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, “wearing of the green,” music and songs, Irish food and drink and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!
HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY! HAPPY EASTER!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART CONTEST! Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention messages with your elementary school students so that they learn good habits from an early age. Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our environment, elementary school students from across Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness. Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference, in media announcements and through other means as appropriate. Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift card. See Official Contest Rules for more information. Everything you’ll need to participate including fact sheets, official rules and the contest entry form and agreement is posted at DontMessWithTexas.org. You can also download a flyer to display at your school to generate interest. The contest is through April 8, 2016. All entries must be submitted or postmarked on or before April 8, 2016. Winners will be announced in early May. Contact Keep Texas Beautiful at 1-800-Clean-Up or info@ktb.org for any questions regarding the contest.

THE SCOUTS ARE COMING
MARCH GARDENING TIPS
For some, there’s nothing more exciting than the arrival of the migratory bird, the Purple Martin. They are the largest of the North American swallows. Flying from South America where they winter, they faithfully return to the same locations every year.
VEGETABLES • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
The first to arrive are called scouts and they are usually the older males. They are not looking for nesting areas but simply returning to where they nested before. The younger males follow and then the females arrive. Both sexes help build the nest, which will be home to 4 or 5 babies. As soon as the chicks leave the nest, the Martins start congregating in large flocks and roost together in preparation for their trip south. Have you ever heard anyone say, “Location, location, location?” This is especially true if you want to attract Purple Martins. They are colonial nesting birds, which means they occupy apartmenttype houses. Since Purple Martins feed while in flight, they prefer their housing be placed in the open, away from human housing and trees. They eat mosquitos, beetles, wasps, dragonflies and other day-flying insects. House Sparrows and Starlings can take over your Purple Martin house. They can prevent Martins from nesting, destroy their eggs and kill nestlings. Do some research on the internet and find out how you can become a successful Purple Martin landlord. TWRC Wildlife Center is a Houston-based wildlife rehabilitation and education center available to anyone needing assistance with wildlife. Check our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter. org or call 713-468-TWRC and don’t forget to donate so we can continue to help wildlife as we’ve done for 36 years.

LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

BE WISE - ORGANIZE! It is so easy to keep putting things in your secret pile in that room or area no one sees. But one day someone will notice! Be wise - organize! Here are some easy DIY tips: • Shoe Boxes as DIY Dividers: You can make a completely customizable set with just scissors and shoe boxes. Simply cut the boxes in half by length or width, as needed for your space, then tuck into a drawer. • Picture Frames as Dry-Erase Board: Stay on top of your errands with an eye-catching DIY memo board: Frame a pretty scrap of fabric or wallpaper, hang in a high traffic area and use a dry-erase market to jot down reminders on the glass.

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer,
26
the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
