GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

On Thursday, September 3, 2015, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) will feature Judy Ulke from Enchanted Forest Landscapes. Judy’s presentation will be “Enjoying a Night Blooming Garden.” She will discuss the many plants that bloom exclusively at night or wait until evening to release their wonderful fragrance. Judy Ulke is the owner of Enchanted Forest in Richmond, Texas and has spent her whole life in the gardening industry. Her parents started their first nursery back in 1976 and 3 out of their 5 children are now in the business themselves.

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

BACK TO SCHOOL By the time this article is published, school will be very close to, if not already, back in session (starts August 24th). The Constables will be watching school zones, as well as areas with increased traffic to assure safe and compliant vehicle operation. Please remember that it is ILLEGAL to pass a stopped school bus that is loading/unloading children. Residents should remember to not only comply with the reduced speeds but should also be alert for young pedestrians and “pick-up/drop-off” traffic patterns. This has changed in recent years with the reduction in bus routes, so please be aware of the areas where children are crossing/waiting Households with young drivers should have the annual “reminder” talk about appropriate speeds in the subdivision and near schools. It also can be beneficial to remind expected guests of the presence of the school zones as well as bicycle lanes.

Labor Day will be celebrated by families around the country with picnics, barbecues, road trips and sports events. It is the last blast of the summer vacation season. Labor Day now is a federal holiday and most Government offices, schools and, businesses are closed. Here are some interesting Labor Day Facts. • Labor Day in Canada began in 1872 in Toronto, but quickly made its way south to the U.S. Originally it began as a significant demonstration demanding rights for workers. • The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. The Labor Day parade of about 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square uptown to 42nd street and ended in Wendel’s Elm Park at 92nd Street and 9th Avenue for a concert, speeches and a picnic.

• Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. • On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. • What are we celebrating? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce. • In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living. Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines. • The year in which the 8-hour day was firmly established was 1916 with the passage of the Adamson Act. This was the first federal law regulating hours of workers in private companies. • Traditionally people did not wear white or seersucker clothes after Labor Day, as it unofficially marked the end of summer. • The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend. • Labor Day is the unofficial last day of vacation before the start of the new school year (and mourned by students all over). Hummingbirds live on a combination of flower nectar and small insects. If you’d like to supplement the hummingbird’s diet with a feeder, there are some important things to know. Make sure to purchase one that is easy to clean and clean it often. Because of Houston’s heat and humidity, mold can develop which is harmful to the birds. It’s easy to make the nectar for the feeder and is cheaper than buying it. Just mix 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Make sure to fully dissolve the sugar. DO NOT USE FOOD COLORING. It is harmful to the birds. Place your feeder where it gets afternoon shade. It’s also helpful if it’s near a shrub or tree where the birds can rest. Since hummingbirds can be a little aggressive in protecting a feeder, you may want to provide several small feeders spaced throughout a large area. Although it’s too late for this year, consider plants that hummingbirds are attracted to for next year. Plants are the natural and preferred method for attracting the birds. If you find a hummingbird in need of help, place them in a container with air holes. You may use tissue or paper towels to support them if they cannot stand on their own but DO NOT use any type of fabric or mesh. Their brushy tipped tongues can get stuck to the fabric. Keep them warm, dry and in a quiet location until you can get them to TWRC. It is important that you get them to us as soon as possible. NEW HOPE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER New Hope Child Development Center ended another fun year with many joyful celebrations including Splash Day and Graduation ceremony. Our “Big Kids” sang and danced their hearts out to a very proud audience of parents and students. There was lots of laughter with a few tears mixed in. We are always sad to see our children grow up and move on but we’ve been doing this for nearly 35 years so you would think we would be used to this by now! Our year was sprinkled with many community outreach projects benefiting Pregnancy Help Center’s Connor’s Closet, JoJo’s Bears, Eternal Food Ministries, Souper Bowl of Caring and several Homeless ministries. Cherubs will meet on Mondays from 6-6:45 PM beginning September 14th and Choristers will meet on Tuesdays from 6-7:15 PM beginning September 1st. The groups will sing during worship services about once a month and a children’s musical will be performed in the spring of 2016. Youth (grades 6-12) are also invited to join Living Word Lutheran Church’s music program. They will learn to read music by singing and playing hand bells. FORT BEND COUNTY AND HOPE FOR THREE HELP TO COMFORT KIDS IN CRISIS With great effort from Hope For Three’s volunteer, Mare Solcher and Deputy Kaminski of the Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constables Office, Hope For Three is helping to make things bearable for children in crisis. Solcher, who chairs the project, recently presented homemade blankets, entertaining toys and soft comforting bears to Precinct 1 Constables Office. Deputy Kaminski, who is a certified Mental Health Peace Officer, stated often times when arriving on a chaotic scene where children are involved, having a cuddly bear or some type of toy on hand, brings comfort to the child. The project is part of the Hope for Three, Autism Advocates Crisis in Training (CIT) partnership with Fort Bend County Law Enforcement. The CIT program seeks to bridge the gap between police response and mental health care by forming a partnership with behavioral health and human services professionals, consumers, their families and law enforcement. Jackson hosted morning and afternoon drive time radio shows for both CBS and Clear Channel radio while also serving as a pre-game and post-game host for The Houston Texans, Houston Rockets and Houston Astros. The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a membership of 85 outdoor enthusiasts. For the last 10 years, chapter members have enjoyed learning together and sharing their love of the outdoors with others. The chapter is part of a state-wide Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 volunteers in 44 local chapters with a total of over 2 million service hours as of 2012! Statewide TMN volunteers have impacted or conducted projects on approximately 195,700 acres of habitat while also developing or maintaining some 1,775 miles of interpretive trails. The Texas Master Naturalists program is sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. The Texas Master Naturalist Program, Coastal Prairie Chapter, is now taking applications for the Fall 2015 training program. Classes and fieldwork provide training in natural history, wildlife and the ecosystems of the area. There are twelve classes, six of which will be on held on Saturdays. Five of the classes will be held on Tuesday evenings. Tuition is $150 and class size is limited to 20. The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. RUOK PROGRAM

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily unsubscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. CHEESY ACORN SQUASH

INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 8 Roma tomatoes, sliced 2 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crusts 8 ounces shredded Mozzarella cheese 4 ounces shredded Fontina cheese 10 fresh basil leaves, washed, dried 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

INGREDIENTS: 1 acorn squash, halved and seeded 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced celery 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS: Stir together olive oil, garlic and salt; toss with tomatoes and allow to stand for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Brush each pizza crust with some of the tomato marinade. Sprinkle the pizzas evenly with Mozzarella and Fontina cheeses. Arrange tomatoes overtop, then sprinkle with shredded basil, Parmesan and feta cheese. DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place squash cut side down in a glass dish. Cook in microwave for 20 minutes on HIGH, until almost tender. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add celery and onion; saute until transparent. Stir in mushrooms; cook 2 to 3 minutes more. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley. Divide mixture in half, spoon into the squash and cover. Cook 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven until the cheese bubbles.
