APRIL IS NATIONAL LAWN AND GARDEN MONTH

By Trey Collier April is National Lawn and Garden month! This gives you a wonderful reason to get outside and get your backyard and garden ready. Whether you are starting from scratch or are an experienced pro, here are several tips that you can use to celebrate Lawn and Garden month in style! Consider Backyard Composting - Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. Backyard composting is an acceleration of the process that occurs in nature. It is recycling at its finest! Use kitchen waste (such as food or paper towels), lawn clippings and wood chips to provide rich and powerful soil for your garden and lawn. Anything that was once living will decompose, giving you endless options for composting. Composting is good for your plants and for you! Adding organic materials to the soil improves moisture retention. It provides a balanced, slow-release source of nutrients that helps the soil hold nutrients long enough for plants to use them. Healthier plants means a healthier you! It will also save you money because you will no longer have to buy fertilizer. Add a compost bin to your garden and start today! Add a fountain - Outdoor fountains offer an easy and affordable way to add style to your lawn or garden. The soothing sound of running water will help to create a tranquil and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Transform your garden into your own personal paradise! Consider adding variety - If you are fond of flower gardening, venture into edible vegetables! You will be thrilled with the sense of accomplishment you feel when you feed your family fresh, healthy produce that you grew on your own. Beans, squash, cucumbers, lettuce/greens, tomatoes, peppers, beets and garlic are all great vegetables to start with. They are relatively easy to maintain and will offer beautiful variety. If you are already growing your own vegetables, consider planting an eye catching flower garden (try marigold, lupine, daisy or wildflower mix seeds). Fruits are also a great option. Apples, figs, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are great for beginners. Variety is the spice of life! Go high-tech - Modern technology impacts our daily life. Why not let it impact your backyard? There are several innovations in outdoor living that you will wonder how you ever lived without. The Robomower will make mowing your lawn virtually effortless. No more back-breaking work and labor intensive afternoons spent cutting grass. You simply install special sensors around the perimeter of your yard and push a button. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Another product worth trying is the Mosquito Eliminator. Gone are the days of tacky bug zappers and pesky insects at parties. It is so beautiful that your guests will never guess that it is fighting mosquitoes and other pests. The Eliminator uses high-tech black light technology to cover up to 1,000 feet

Other garden technology to be on the look for: gardening apps for smartphones (such as iVeggieGarden, which allows you to view over 500 varieties of vegetables and offers tips and ideas), time lapsed garden cameras (which take pictures at various intervals and produce videos or slideshows showing growth progress) and electronic soil testers.

PLANTING THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE

CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from highvoltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy. com/trees.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

IT’S THAT TIME

By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys. It’s baby season in the world of wildlife. The most likely animals that may be using your home or out-buildings as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing activity during the day, it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and are active at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best if you can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies are old enough, she will move out on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud radio, bright lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of your chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her. If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing the noise. If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If you continue to hear the

April 2016

5

noise, this may mean a baby is stuck. Seek professional help for removal but make sure you hire a company that will work to try to reunite the mother and baby. Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother is cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are alike, so do your research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how the animals will be handled. Will the animal be killed and if so, why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned or abandoned? Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance finding a humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call.

The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry points and block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals in your attic or walls before you do this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find openings, repair them. Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are only looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their little ones until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us. For more information or for help with wildlife issues, call TWRC Wildlife Center at 713-468-TWRC or check our website at www. twrcwildlifecenter.org.
