Recycling Lake Forest, Lake of Buckingham and Best Trash take great pride in their recycling program and efforts. Recycling takes time and effort on both sides. Best Trash will collect papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans and glass that are placed within the provided recycling bin. Please remove caps, liquids and food products from inside the containers. Best Trash will recycle any plastic container which has a number (1-7) printed on it within the recycling logo. They DO NOT recycle grocery sacks, newspaper delivery sacks, nor the plastic wrap enclosing 24 packs of water bottles, dog food, etc. They DO NOT recycle light bulbs. If items exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to bin well marked as recycling materials. If you find items left in your bin, it means they are not recyclable. Please dispose of these items in your trash container for the next scheduled pick up. Please only use the recycle bins for recyclable materials, not as an extra trash container.

Help Our Security Guards Help You!

We have chosen to have 24 hour security in our neighborhoods because we want to be safe. With a little help from all of the residents, we can make our security even better! 1. Every resident needs to have a clicker in every car to open the gate. If you do not have one, please contact Crest Management to find out about getting one. Contact Heather with Crest Management at 281-579-0761 ext. 636. If you choose not to have a clicker, you will be stopped at the gate and the guard will have to check you in the same way they would check a guest in.

2. Do not open the gate from across the road. When the gate opens, cars waiting in line can simply drive in the gate. The guard has no way of stopping them. 3. If you are expecting someone to come to your house, you might want to think about calling the gate and letting the guard know. This helps to expedite things. For example, if you order a pizza, either call the guard to let them know it is okay to let the pizza delivery person in or at the very least, answer your phone if the guard calls. In the future, anyone who does not receive permission to enter the neighborhoods will not be allowed through the gate. 4. Update your lists for the guards of everyone who is allowed access to your property without a phone call. If the person is not on your list and the guard cannot contact you, they will be turned away. 5. If you are having a party, please give a list of your guests (preferably in alphabetical order) to the guard on duty. If the guard does not have a list, they will call you for every person who comes to the gate. If you do not answer the phone, the guard has been instructed NOT to let them in. The LF HOA has asked our security company to attend the September Board meeting. Many issues will be discussed with the sole purpose of making our two neighborhoods the safest and most wonderful places to live in Katy. You will be notified of any additional changes to the post orders for our security guards. Thank you for your cooperation! Best Regards, Karen Janczak, CMCA, AMS Crest Management Company 17171 Park Row, Suite 310, Houston, TX 77084 281-579-0761 ext. 612

WHAT IS EASTER? Easter is the time for holidays, festivals and a time for giving chocolate Easter eggs. But Easter means much more.... Easter is one of the oldest and the more important Christian Festivals, the celebration of the death and coming to life again of Jesus Christ. For Christians, the dawn of Easter Sunday with its message of new life is the high point of the Christian year.

WHAT IS THE EASTER STORY? Easter is the story of Jesus’ last days in Jerusalem before his death. The Easter story includes Maundy Thursday (the Last supper leading to the Eucharist), Good Friday (the day on which Jesus was crucified) and Easter Day (the day on which Jesus came back to life). It is a sad story because Jesus was killed. But the story has a very happy ending, because Jesus came back to life and visited his friends and followers once more. He did not die at all, but went back up to Heaven to be with God, his father.

WHERE DOES THE NAME ‘EASTER’ COME FROM? Pagan traditions give us the English word “Easter” which comes from the word “Eostre.” The Anglo-Saxon word for April was “Eostre-monath” (the month of openings). However, it should be remembered that Christians celebrated the resurrection of Christ long before the word “Easter” was used and the word they used for the celebration was “Pascha,” which is derived from and linked to the Jewish festival of Passover. According to Bede, the English monastic historian, the English word Easter comes from the Anglo-Saxon name for the month of April, which was known as “Eostremonath” in the AngloSaxon tongue and since Pascha was most often celebrated in Eostremonath, the English Christians began calling it “Easter.” Bede also notes that the month was named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess Esostre. Rituals related to the goddess Eostre focus on new beginnings, symbolized by the Easter egg, and fertility, which is symbolized by the hare (or Easter bunny). Pack 209“Marked Men” Katy Boy Scout Troop 209 recently held an Eagle Scout Award Court of Honor ceremony to recognize Michael Gilbert, Ryan Goodwin and Ian Johnecheck for achieving Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. Each Scout individually completed the requirements for Eagle by demonstrating leadership skills and proficiency as well as by initiating and leading a community service project. Michael’s project benefited St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church’s Youth Program, Ryan’s project benefited The Katy Heritage Society and Ian’s project benefited the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition. The three began Scouting in 2000 as Tiger Cubs in Cub Scout Troop 925. Now as Eagle Scouts they have become “Marked Men” by assuming the solemn obligation to do their duty to God, to Country, to fellow Scouts and to Mankind in general. Graduating from high school in 2011, Michael currently attends Midwestern State University, Ryan attends the University of Arkansas and Ian attends the University of Oklahoma. Troop 209, sponsored by St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, was established in 1939 and since then 138 of its members have become Eagle Scouts. Only 4 in 100 Scouts will earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

two from Katy advaNCiNg to eLKs state hoop shoot One week after the Katy Elks lodge hosted its annual free throw “Hoop Shoot,” two of the six winners who had advanced to District competition are now on their way to State to vie for the next level contest, Regional. Any who survive these two rounds will be Nationals bound in Springfield, MA this summer. Macy Ray, winner in the 12-13 girls category and Bennett Hanks, 8-9 boys winner, will be representing the Gulf Coast Disrtict in Dallas. This is Bennett’s first trip to State, while Macy will be enjoying her third time there. Last year Macy advanced to National competition where she placed fourth. Katy has always provided strong competition to other Elks Lodges in the “Hoop Shoot” scholarship program. Rick McCool, along with his wife Shirley, have spear-headed the local “Hoop Shoot” for over 30 years, a number of which Rick has also served as District chair. This will be their final year to direct any “Hoop Shoot” activities since Rick has chosen to “retire.” Knowing Rick, he will still be available to help but he is turning the local and district chairs over to Dan Tass, along with the help of his wife Gail, to direct the winning tradition that has been set by Katy area youth and the Katy Elks Lodge.

NCL Star Chapter

The Star Chapter of NCL celebrated the Senior Class of 2012 in the ballroom of the Omni Houston Hotel at Westside in February. We recognized each of these 23 young ladies for what they have accomplished in the past six years in the NCL organization. They have contributed over 6,000 hours to their chapter and community working through 20 local charities. Each young lady learned how to serve her community, be a leader and open her eyes to the cultural arts around her. The Star Chapter is dedicated to mothers and daughters serving together and building a close relationship, which together empowers them to be confident, well rounded and socially aware.

The mission of NCL is to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. The Azalea Chapter was formed in 1999 and in the past year its members have served over 9100 volunteer hours in support of 26 charitable organizations in Katy.
