WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE OUR COMMUNITY

BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER Did you know that an average-size dog will deposit 275 pounds of manure every year? It shouldn’t be a surprise that your neighbor doesn’t want it in his or her yard. Please be considerate and clean up after your pet! Please report unleashed dogs to Animal Control at 281- 999-3191.

REPORT VANDALISM AND SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR TO THE POLICE

Report vandalism to Crest for the common areas and keep an eye out for your neighbor’s home, yard and cars. If you witness any suspicious activity, please contact the local authorities immediately.

ASK GUESTS TO PARK IN YOUR DRIVE OR IN FRONT OF YOUR OWN HOME In the event that you are having a large family gathering or a party, it is always best to keep your neighbors updated so that they will know the approximate time the event will end.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE

DRIVE SLOW & WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS Please take the time to drive slowly through the neighborhood especially around curves and corners. It is also important that you instruct your friends and visitors to also be cautious and drive slowly while in our Community.

Did you know that the governing documents of Lakes of Pine Forest requires all homeowners to submit an application for any improvement or modification to the exterior of your home? This application is reviewed and decided on by the Architectural Control Committee (ACC). Springtime is the season to make repairs and upgrades to the exterior of your home, including the landscaping. Please don’t forget to submit your application before making a change to the exterior of your home. The ACC Committee tries to process the applications as quickly as possible. Supplying the specifications of your improvement and a sample or detailed list of materials to be used will also help speed up this process. You may contact Crest Management for an application.

LEAVING TOWN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME? • Turn off the water to the house and open all outside valves and leave them open while away. • If you have a gas water heater, you want to turn the control to “Pilot.”

August 2015

Lakes of Pine Forest

• If the water heater is electric, you want to turn the breaker off. • You do not need to drain your water heater. • For your washing machine, it is a good idea to turn the valves off. • For your HVAC system, it is a good idea to set the thermostat to 55 or 60 degrees and open your cabinet doors. • Have your plumber turn back on your house water supply and flush out the lines.

PLEASE SLOW DOWN FOR OUR KIDS! Use caution as you travel through the community and watch for children walking to and from the bus stops. Acknowledge and obey the laws for school zones and bus loading and unloading. If the lights are blinking, you need to stop! If thirty seconds can’t be spared to slow down for a school zone or stop for a bus, what about the ten minutes it takes a deputy to write a ticket? Safety makes the most sense. A little patience and vigilance on the road will go a long way in keeping Lakes of Pine Forest’s children safe.

NO FARM ANIMALS ALLOWED Chickens, roosters and ducks are not allowed as pets in the subdivision. Domestic animals such as cats and dogs are the only types of animals allowed. Legal action will be taken against violators.

KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs in front of your property clean and free from yard waste and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to flow through to the drains. Grass growing in the curbs and drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high water we typically see with a heavy rain. Also, it is illegal to sweep or blow any lawn clippings, leaves or other debris into the county drains. Please re mind your lawn crews to take your clippings with them. Thank you for helping to keep Lakes of Pine Forest neat and clean!

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. Lakes of Pine Forest

August 2015

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

2015 • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he can run right back in at the first sign of danger! He would do best in a quiet household because of his dislike of loud or sudden noises and he would love to be an only cat. Benjamin is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and neutered. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.

GREEN TIPS Reasons to lose your styrofoam habit - Many of us use styrofoam cups at work or when we get fast food: they’re just so convenient. But if you use one styrofoam cup a day, you’re adding 23 pounds of waste to the landfill every year (and that’s not counting all of those restaurant to-go boxes). Re-using bread bags - Bread bags are quite handy and can take the place of other products that you might buy, so, even though we probably can’t keep them out of the waste stream forever, they can be used for other purposes that may prevent the use/purchase of another product. Here are some ideas: • • • • •

For packing sandwiches As packing material when shipping goods General storage for small items A replacement for freezer bags Plastic bag crafts (you can use strips to weave rugs or placemats or make “rope”) • A cake icing piping bag • For picking up dog poop (other small bags can be re-used for this purpose too, like snack/chip bags) • Makeshift gloves for touching unpleasant or corrosive things (snack/chip bags good for this, too) • Seed starters - put soil in the bottom & use them for seedling starters (also snack/chip bags) • Car travel sick bag (also snack/chip bags) • Trash bags for small trashcans or for the car (also snack/chip bags) • Seasoning bag; add seasoning and meat and shake. Be sure to shake the crumbs out of the bag before storing for reuse! Lakes of Pine Forest
