ASK GUESTS TO PARK IN YOUR DRIVE OR IN FRONT OF YOUR OWN HOME In the event that you are having a large family gathering or a party, it is always best to keep your neighbors updated so that they will know the approximate time the event will end. DRIVE SLOW & WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS Please take the time to drive slowly through the neighborhood especially around curves and corners. It is also important that you instruct your friends and visitors to also be cautious and drive slowly while in our Community.

KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN

Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs in front of your property clean and free from yard waste and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to flow through to the drains. Grass growing in the curbs and drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high water we typically see with a heavy rain.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

LEAVING TOWN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME? • Turn off the water to the house and open all outside valves and leave them open while away. • If you have a gas water heater, you want to turn the control to “Pilot.” • If the water heater is electric, you want to turn the breaker off. • You do not need to drain your water heater. • For your washing machine, it is a good idea to turn the valves off. • For your HVAC system, it is a good idea to set the thermostat to 55 or 60 degrees and open your cabinet doors. • Have your plumber turn back on your house water supply and flush out the lines.

HOLIDAY SECURITY During the holidays there is an unfortunate increase in home and vehicle burglaries. There are a few things you can do to deter thieves. When shopping for those gifts, secure them in the trunk of your car or out of sight. Visible shopping bags are an invitation to thieves. Be aware of people around you and if you feel someone is following you or watching you, do not get in the car. Many shopping malls offer security officer that will escort you to your car. Take advantage of that service. It’s no secret that piles of unchecked holiday mail and newspapers can tip off burglars to an empty house and lead to holiday

break-ins. If you’re traveling during the holidays, it’s a good idea to ask a neighbor to help keep up your home’s appearances so it doesn’t have that vacant look about it. Even a small favor such as asking your neighbor to occasionally park their car in your driveway can improve your home security. Use timers to turn lights on and off in the living areas of your home to give the appearance that someone is there.

CHRISTMAS TREE TIPS Permission to reprint granted by the National Safety Council, a membership organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. For many people, decorating the Christmas tree is a favorite part of the holiday. The National Safety Council offers some safety tips to make sure a mishap doesn’t spoil your holiday season. Christmas Trees A real tree can add to the spirit of Christmas by filling your home with beauty and the scent of pine. But a real tree can also pose a fire hazard. Each year, more than 400 residential fires involve Christmas trees and tragically nearly 40 deaths and 100 injuries result from those fires. • Try to select a fresh tree by looking for one that is green. The needles of pines and spruces should bend and not break and should be hard to pull off the branches. On fir species, a needle pulled from a fresh tree will snap when bent, much like a fresh carrot. Also, look for a trunk sticky with sap. • Cut off about two inches of the trunk and put the tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand. Keep the stand filled with water so the tree does not dry out quickly. • Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways.

December 2015

Lakes of Pine Forest

• If you use an artificial tree, choose one that tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. Tree lights • Only use indoor lights indoors (and outdoor lights only outdoors). Look for the UL label. Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections. Replace or repair any damaged light sets. • Also, use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs. • Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. Tree ornaments • Always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. • Read labels before you use materials that come in jars, cans and spray cans. • Never place lighted candles on a tree or near any flammable materials. • Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. • Do not hang popcorn chains and candy canes on the tree when small children are present. They may think that other tree ornaments are also edible.

NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS One of our traditional fireworks holidays is approaching. Please be considerate of your neighbors while enjoying the tradition of fireworks on New Years’ Eve. Don’t use people, cars or structures as targets for bottle rockets and roman candles. It would be tragic to cause injury or damage on this exciting holiday. • Fireworks cannot be used in the neighborhood parks. • Do not direct any fireworks at anything or anyone. • Do not shoot fireworks off before 9 AM or after 10 PM on any day other than New Year’s Eve. • Avoid shooting fireworks that shoot up or fly through the air. • If a car comes down the street, get out of its way and do not light any fireworks while it is passing. • Don’t make the “fireworks holiday” turn into a month of fireworks. • Frightened pets must be taken inside while the fireworks are in use. Protect your pets at all times. • MOST IMPORTANT: Clean up the mess! Sweep the streets and drives (and, don’t forget to pick up the items that accidentally went into your neighbor’s yard). Celebrate responsibly and always have a designated driver!

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

8 TIPS TO MANAGE HOLIDAY SPENDING

QUALITY PLUMBING

Think you can’t get through the holidays without spending a fortune? Read on for some tips on how to make this season a spending holiday, rather than getting wrapped up in holiday spending.

THREE BEST HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR YOUR HONEY George Bailey, the lead character in “It’s A Wonderful Life,” was no stranger to stress and hardship during Christmas of 1946, enduring bankruptcy, dishonesty and an attempted suicide. It took all of this - plus some tough lessons from a guardian angel - for him to eventually realize that life is, in fact, wonderful. While it is a wonderful time of the year, it can also be taxing on relationships, energy and finances. Consequently, all the social gatherings, travel time and shopping trips can make it difficult to emotionally connect with your spouse, let alone reflect on the holiday’s eternal significance. Want to avoid burnout and frustration this year? Give your spouse the three best gifts you can give - communication, time and perspective - and reconnect with the true meaning of Christmas as a couple. GIFT #1: The gift of communication The holiday season involves a lot of decisions. Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page regarding these three significant areas:

THE BOTTOM LINE: Don’t let your debt become the Scrooge that steals the fun out of your holiday season. Spend time with your friends and family, base your gift buying on sentiment rather than dollar value and avoid giving yourself a year-round debt headache. If you can follow these tips, when your holiday bank statements arrive in the New Year, you’ll find yourself singing “Joy to the World” all over again. Courtesy of Investopedia.com

MLP19029

C

1. Set Limits for Total Holiday Spending: Give your credit card and your mind a holiday by limiting what you buy to what can safely come out of your bank account. The money you can reasonably spend on gifts is money that isn’t going to bills. 2. Make Your Own “Naughty” or “Nice” Lists: If your shopping list includes more than five people outside of your immediate family, cut down on the number of people on your present list. Then, bake some cookies to give to all the people you snipped from your original gift list. 3. Budget Based on Your Own Finances: If you have any doubts as to whether those on your list will appreciate the less expensive presents you buy them, think back to what your friends and family gave to you when their budgets were tighter. 4. Become a Coupon and Coupon Code Collector: Before you shop online or in stores, perform a quick web search for coupon codes for your favorite online stores and also comb through the coupons you received in your mailbox. 5. Give Your Time: Mom and Dad (or other far-away family and friends) might love nothing more than a visit from you. Give small gifts and large hugs. However, if you’re tight on cash and want to send a gift, try a calling card. 6. Give Yourself a Better Spending Habit: Give yourself a gift by developing a new and improved spending habit. For example, for every dollar you spend on gifts, you could find a way to remove that dollar from your regular spending. 7. Give Personalized Gifts Instead of Expensive Gifts: A small, thoughtful gift is worth more than an expensive gift that someone may never use. Avoid impulses to shop at trendy department stores and start the holiday by taking a moment to think about what those on your list could really use. 8. Organize Group Volunteering Instead of Holiday Parties: Your friends probably struggle with overspending as much as you do over the holidays. Give them the relief of forgoing buying gifts for you by organizing a group volunteer day instead.

ADVANCED HOME EXTERIORS WE DON’T TRY TO DO IT ALL... WE ONLY DO WHAT WE DO BEST! SIDING, WINDOWS & ROOFING

1. Gift budget. Be sure to set a budget before you start shopping and planning. Sit down with your spouse and determine who you will give gifts to, what you will spend in total and how to disperse that budget among those on your gift list. 2. Social calendar. As a couple, decide which things are the most practical for your marriage and then attend accordingly. 3. Time between your families. Discuss how you will balance your time between two families, especially if you have limited time off work. GIFT #2: The gift of time It’s no surprise that date nights can be vital for the future health of your marriage. According to a study published by the Australian government’s Institute of Family Studies, the longest-married couples held up memories and shared experiences as a chief factor in their relationships. How can you do this? • End-of-an-errand date. Stop at a coffee house on your way home from a shopping trip. Don’t take it to go, stay for a little while and talk about stuff other than Christmas. Enjoy this time together. • Romantic drives. Think there’s so much running around that you and your spouse don’t have time for a date? Write questions on small strips of paper and put them in an envelope. Have the passenger pull them out to read while the other is driving. Who said a trip to the mall store can’t be romantic?

HEALTHY HOLIDAY EATING TIPS

The latest buzz among health-conscious consumers, “eating clean,” is a concept that stresses healthy, whole, unprocessed foods. Here are the seven core principles of Eating Clean: 1. Choose whole, natural foods and seek to eliminate or minimize processed foods. Processed foods are anything in a box, bag, can or package and although there are a few exceptions (like a bag of fresh green beans), majority of your foods should be fresh. 2. Choose unrefined over refined foods. While it may not be possible all the times, you can up your intake of whole grains like brown rice, millet, amaranth and quinoa. Beans and legumes are also important. Clean sugars include honey, maple syrup and dehydrated sugar cane juice. 3. Include some protein, carbohydrate and fat at every meal. We often lack protein, especially in the early part of the day, like at breakfast and lunch. Protein is an important muscle-builder and it can also help curb your appetite. When eaten throughout the day, it keeps us feeling full longer. 4. Watch out for fat, salt and sugar. This is easier than you think, particularly if you’ve cut out processed foods, which are responsible for most of our excess calories and high levels of fat, sugar and salt. Clean foods are usually naturally low in all of these ingredients. 5. Eat five to six small meals throughout the day. This usually pans out into three main meals and two or three hefty snacks. Eating this way prevents you from skipping meals and overeating. It also keeps your blood sugar levels steady so energy doesn’t lag. 6. Don’t drink your calories. High calorie drinks like specialty coffees and soft drinks, tack on an extra 400-500 calories a day. Choose water first. 7. Get moving. Regular physical activity is a must for many reasons. Not only does it decrease fat, strengthen and build muscle and help you burn more energy at rest, it keeps your heart, lungs and bones healthy and strong. Courtesy of cookinglight.com

Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club will conduct FREE vision screening to children from six months of age and older at the Jersey Village Holiday in the Park, to be held Sunday December 6th, from 1-4 PM at Clark Henry Park. This vision screening uses a unique special camera that takes a photo of the child’s eyes and within seconds relates a pass or refer status. Those with the refer status will need to have a professional eye examination at a local optometrist. Vision problems are the leading disability in children, who are unaware that they cannot see properly. They cannot compare their vision to others and vision problems do not cause pain or inflammation, so parents, teachers and caregivers are unaware that the child has visual difficulties. Eighty percent of learning is visual. The Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club has recently purchased the Plusoptix Vision Screener for this community service project. This is part of a nationwide KidSight initiative through Lions Clubs International to screen children early for vision problems. Please bring your children to the Houston CyFair Lions Club booth at Holiday in the Park for this important screening, which takes only a minute. To schedule a free vision screening at your day care or church, please contact: Sandy Martin, Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club Vision Screening Program, 281-550-2798 or bikee77095@yahoo.com.
