SWIMMING SAFETY TIPS
With summer almost here it is essential for families to follow a few guidelines for water safety:
PETS
• Never swim alone. • Ocean currents can be unpredictable, so swim in familiar areas. • Children should be supervised at all times. Remove all toys from the water once play time is finished. • Life vests are essential for kids that cannot swim safely by themselves! • Avoid parental distractions like talking with a friend or using your phone while your child is playing in the water. • Sign up for your local CPR Class so you are prepared in case of emergency! • Remember to use sunscreen and stay hydrated while outside in the Texas heat!
• LOPF homeowners are encouraged to keep exterior porch lights on at night • If you will be away be sure that you have someone pickup fliers left on your front door or porch • Lock car doors at night • Call the Sheriff’s Office if you see anything that does not look right

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN
Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs in front of your property clean and free from yard waste and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to flow through to the drains. Grass growing in the curbs and drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high water we typically see with a heavy rain. Also, it is illegal to sweep or blow any lawn clippings, leaves or other debris into the county drains. Please re mind your lawn crews to take your clippings with them. Thank you for helping to keep Lakes of Pine Forest neat and clean!

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY • Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

VACATION PLANS
As summer gets into full swing and vacation plans are made, be sure to let a trusted neighbor know when you will be away. Remember to stop the mail (can be done on-line at https:// holdmail.usps.com/holdmail/ or at the post office, 3 day minimum). Either stop newspaper delivery (https://myaccount. houstonchronicle.com/Login.aspx and log into your account) or arrange for someone to keep them from collecting in front of your house. There no longer is a credit for undelivered newspapers. Our experience is that the newspaper never stopped coming even though we requested a stop, so we just have someone pick up the newspaper. There is a great video online at www.howcast.com/videos/369734-How-to-SecureYour-Home-while-Youre-on-Vacation with some simple tips on securing your home. One simple suggestion you might not think of, is to lock your garage doors from the inside, then unplug the garage door opener. This prevents someone from using a decoder and entering your garage and home.
faster when selected, this feature can be very wasteful because some TVs chug away at more than 20 watts 24/7 rather than 0.3 watts without the feature enabled. So turn this feature off if you can wait the few extra seconds. 3. Wash clothes in cold water and use the fastest spin speed available. Today’s clothes washers and detergents are designed to effectively clean clothes in cold water. This avoids having to heat the 15 or so gallons of water used per load. If you have a front-loading washer, select the machine’s highest spin speed, which will remove more of the moisture from your clothes so you’ll cut dryer time and save money, too. 4. Turn off the Instant-on setting on the Xbox One. This game console is shipped with the Instant On feature enabled, which causes it to continuously use 12.5 watts even when turned off. Selecting the Energy-Saving mode instead can cut your Xbox’s total annual energy use by more than a third.
1. Buy LED light bulbs - Today’s LED bulbs last up to 25 times longer and have really come down in price, with some costing only $8. Due to their long life and efficiency, LED bulbs will easily save you more than $100 over their lifetime.
5. Turn off your furnace when the cold weather ends. Like many other modern appliances, home central heating systems (furnaces) use electricity even when they’re not operating. According to a Home Energy article, many furnaces draw 8 to 12 watts of standby power 24/7 when not in use. To eliminate this waste during the 9-10 months when you don’t need heat, switch off the power to the furnace.
2. Adjust your TV’s settings (turn Auto Brightness Control on and Quick Start off). Many digital TVs come with a feature called Automatic Brightness Control (ABC), which, if enabled, causes your TV to automatically adjust the screen’s brightness to the room’s light levels. So if you’re watching TV at night in a dimly lit room, the screen doesn’t need to be as bright and your TV will use less power. Also some smart (Internet-connected TVs) come with a Quick Start feature. While the TV will power up a few seconds
6. Buy a new toilet that uses no more than 1.28 gallons per flush. If you’re remodeling or have an older toilet that uses 1.6 gallons per flush or (worse yet) an older one that might be using 5 gallons per flush, swap it out for a more water-efficient toilet. Look for models with a Water Sense label because they’re efficient & also meet various flushing performance requirements. A family of 4 can save 6 gallons of clean drinking water per DAY, simply by switching from a toilet that uses 1.6 to 1.28 gallons per flush.

Fireworks certainly have grown and not only in complexity. The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) estimates that more than 14,000 fireworks displays light up the nation’s sky each Independence Day. Courtesy of: www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/02/fireworks-american-history_n_5552960.html
PET FRIENDLY 4 TH OF JULY TIPS As we prepare for barbeques and fireworks this Fourth of July, think about how to keep your pets safe and calm during this Independence Day celebration.
WHY WE CELEBRATE WITH FIREWORKS ON JULY 4 TH
Ever wondered why we set off gorgeous displays of fireworks in our sky each Fourth of July? Apparently, the history of fireworks in America is as old our country itself.
On our first Independence Day celebration, held in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, when the country was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, citizens came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise spirits.
8
One of our Founding Fathers had even predicted that Americans would commemorate their independence with pomp and circumstance. On July 3, 1776, a day ahead of the Continental Congress’ initial adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Massachusetts delegate John Adams penned a letter to his wife, envisioning the festivities.
• It is safer to keep your pets at home during Fourth of July celebrations instead of bringing him/her to your neighbor’s party. • Dogs can be startled by the loud noise of fireworks. Once the festivities begin, keep your pet in a safe room where he/she can feel comfortable.

• Block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the television. Play soothing music in the background to counteract the cacophony during the rockets’ red glare. • Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets’ diet can cause stomach upset. In addition, some certain foods like onions, avocado, grapes and raisins can be toxic. • Human products can be dangerous to animals. Avoid spraying your pet with insect repellent and only use special sunscreen that is intended for animal use. • Keep your pets away from matches and lighter fluid. They can be extremely irritating to the stomach, lungs and central nervous system, if ingested. Article courtesy of www.akc.org/press-center/july-4-tips

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER REMAINING 2015 SEASON EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER
The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy.
2015
• Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages. • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center. Season subscriptions packages are now available for purchase for the 2014-2015 season. Season subscriptions offer incentives and discounts to new and returning patrons for every performance and packages start as low as $100. Patrons can purchase their subscriptions online at www.houstonfac.coM or call the HFAC box office at 281-685-6374.

The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how far women have come in the fight for equality in the past 100 years.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
25% OFF for First 4 Months
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
First-Time Customers Only
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Build self-confidence. • Provide service to others. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. Please contact Angelita Guerrero, Copperhead District Executive (713-756-3389 or email angelita.guerrero@scouting.org) or to go www.copperhead.shac.org to find join a Scouting unit near you.

CORNERSTONE UMC LAUNCHES SUMMER SHOE DRIVE!
832-593-7555
Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. You can bring your donations by Monday-Thursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church office to schedule a time to pick up the shoes.
LICENSE #19658E
All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. By donating shoes to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives. For more information or questions about the shoe drive, please contact Scott Grow at youth@cornerstoneumc.org or contact the church office at 281-859-4141.

Chief Bragg was recognized on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Salute to Law Enforcement, a program that he started. The day allows various law enforcement agencies and the public to come together for a community event in which fallen officers are recognized, scholarships are awarded and demonstrations are presented. Over the last 20 years, the event has reached more than 50,000 members of the public, and each year more than 80 different agencies are represented. “These recipients are true patriots and heroes in our community,” said Chapter Vice President Tom Jackson. “They have profound impacts in our neighborhoods and on our children. They make things better for everyone around them, and that’s exactly the spirit that the leaders, soldiers, merchants and laymen of the American Revolution would have appreciated.”

St. Jude helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say Novena 9 times a day for 9 days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you St. Jude – EG
