CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2015! Happy FATHERS’s Day! LAKES OF PINE FOREST 2014 -2015 It’s hard to believe that our community is over 10 years old! How time flies. One of the milestones for Lakes Of Pine Forest was seeing the last home built; followed by the departure of the developer. This resulted in eventual Homeowner control of our homeowners association. Unfortunately, 2014 was an event filled year and a very rough start for the newly established Board. Above and beyond the normal repairs like downed trees or flagpole damage, we had to recover from multiple rounds of vandalism in our park, pool and lake areas. Resulting in replacement of almost all of the sprinkler heads all across the park, twice; two park/water system pumps sawed off and stolen; ugly graffiti painted on the playground toys, as well as the monument signs on the Windsong Trail side of the sub-division. The industrial pumps were replaced in relatively short order thanks to the responsiveness of a Board member, the graffiti power washed off in the course of a day and the sprinkler heads replaced within days for both occurrences. The message here for all is to be ever vigilant when something does not look right, any time of the day or night, call it in: 713-221-6000 (non emergency-Harris County Sheriff). It will take the efforts of all the homeowners to get rid of these acts of vandalism. We need to show whoever is doing these things that we will not stand for it - this is OUR POOL, OUR LAKES, OUR PARK, OUR NEIGHBOORHOOD AND OUR HOMES. Perhaps right now you are wondering: “What else?” What is going on in 2015? Well, your volunteer Board has identified the need to continue to repair and upgrade our now aging infrastructure. We have prioritized a list of projects and put items with safety concerns at the top of the list. Some of these changes are not readily visible and some of the results are hidden in everyday activities but please be assured that projects are being completed, as much as can be done with our budgetary restraints. Some of the projects both completed and still underway include: • • • • • • • • •

new drains in the area of the playground installing a new well required by the Barker Cypress MUD extensive repairs to the pool perimeter fence replacement of the playground kiddie fill pool system repairs a cover for the children’s pool improved pool security lake fountain repairs (ongoing) as well as others

Did you know that the governing documents of Lakes of Pine Forest requires all homeowners to submit an application for any improvement or modification to the exterior of your home? This application is reviewed and decided on by the Architectural Control Committee (ACC). Springtime is the season to make repairs and upgrades to the exterior of your home, including the landscaping. Please don’t forget to submit your application before making a change to the exterior of your home. The ACC Committee tries to process the applications as quickly as possible. DRIVE SLOW & WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS Please take the time to drive slowly through the neighborhood especially around curves and corners. It is also important that you instruct your friends and visitors to also be cautious and drive slowly while in our Community.

LEAVING TOWN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME? • Turn off the water to the house and open all outside valves and leave them open while away. • If you have a gas water heater, you want to turn the control to “Pilot.” • If the water heater is electric, you want to turn the breaker off. • You do not need to drain your water heater. • For your washing machine, it is a good idea to turn the valves off. • For your HVAC system, it is a good idea to set the thermostat to 55 or 60 degrees and open your cabinet doors. • Have your plumber turn back on your house water supply and flush out the lines.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

CHILD SAFETY WHILE HOME ALONE

If you have decided to allow your children to stay home alone during the holiday break, you will need to provide them with some basic training. The following are just a few suggestions: • Make sure they can lock and unlock the doors and windows. • Keep a first aid kit handy and teach them a few basics. • Provide a list of helpful numbers. • Write down your home address. • Go over steps to follow in case of an emergency. • Instruct them to keep all doors, windows and shades closed at all time. • Do not open the door for strangers! • For more tips, visit www.safekids.com.

NO FARM ANIMALS ALLOWED

Chickens, roosters and ducks are not allowed as pets in the subdivision. Domestic animals such as cats and dogs are the only types of animals allowed. Legal action will be taken against violators.

KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN

Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs in front of your property clean and free from yard waste and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to flow through to the drains. Grass growing in the curbs and drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high water we typically see with a heavy rain. Also, it is illegal to sweep or blow any lawn clippings, leaves or other debris into the county drains. Please re mind your lawn crews to take your clippings with them. Thank you for helping to keep Lakes of Pine Forest neat and clean!

Lakes of Pine Forest

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

Sponsored by Northwest Dodge and Bridgeland, the year-end celebration capped a school year that has paid tribute to 75 years of excellence dating back to the union of the Cypress and Fairbanks school systems in 1939. The free event kicked off in the front parking lot of the Berry Center with carnival amusements, games, bounce houses, a climbing wall, a juggler, unicyclist, stilt walker and a horse-andbuggy ride. More than 60 vendor booths lined the center of the carnival. Local country-western band Sawdust Road provided musical entertainment and guests dined from various food trucks.

We will also be giving an additional gift to three of our special fathers: the oldest father in attendance, the father with the youngest child in nursery/worship and the father with the most children present. The theme of the service will be centered around Dr. Dave Meadows’ Father’s Day message entitled, “How Big Is Your God, Daddy?” as we honor our fathers and other men who have touched our lives with their guidance and love. Make plans to join us for the special worship opportunity and be sure to bring your dad! Free Movie Night, June 13th! Great Movie! Fun People! Free Childcare! What are you doing on Saturday evening on June 13th? How about coming for a free movie night at Cornerstone UMC? At 5 PM the friendliest church in the neighborhood will host a movie night for the community. The movie will be Walt Disney’s “BIG HERO 6” an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. All ages are invited! Pack your neighbors in the van and head to Cornerstone United Methodist Church on June 13th.

PATRIOTIC WORSHIP & FELLOWSHIP CELEBRATION On Sunday, June 28th, Cornerstone United Methodist Church will be hosting a special “Patriotic Worship Event.” In celebration of our nation’s birthday on July 4th, Steve Hoyle, the Cornerstone Music Director, has put together a festive musical extravaganza entitled, “Let Freedom Ring.” The program will include patriot songs and readings, a time of prayer for our nation, a salute to our Armed Forces and a “message in song” focusing on “Oldtime Southern Gospel” music. On this Sunday only, rather than the usual three services at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:45 AM (there will also be Christian Education at 9:30 AM), Cornerstone will have just one “churchwide” service at 10:45 AM. The “Patriotic Celebration” will be presented at this churchwide 10:45 AM service. An orchestra will accompany the Cornerstone chancel choir. After the service, there will be a hot dog luncheon and a time of games and fellowship. Don’t miss this wonderful event. Bring your family. Bring your friends. Bring everyone you can and come celebrated with us the birthday of our nation on Sunday, June 28th. Cornerstone UMC Launches Summer Shoe Drive! Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. You can bring your donations by Monday-Thursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church office to schedule a time to pick up the shoes. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school.

Miguel and Troop 1296 built the pathway with weed block, pavers and sand, where there was previously a grassy area with poor drainage which was becoming muddy due to a combination of foot traffic and recent rain. The resulting pathway is the result of many scouts participating (almost 200 hours combined) in the hard digging in preparation for laying the final pavers and sand. Congratulations on a job well done!

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

Please contact Angelita Guerrero, Copperhead District Executive (713-756-3389 or email angelita.guerrero@scouting.org) or to go www.copperhead.shac.org to find join a Scouting unit near you.

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 61

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities. Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer.

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.

Boy Scout Troop 61 meets from 7:00 to 8:00 PM every Wednesday in the Activity Room at Peace Community Church. Contact Mike Viator with Troop 61 if your son is interested in joining a local Boy Scout Troop. Cell: 713-409-1934, mike.viator@comcast.net.

Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson.

Cub Scouts is a fun way to teach boys about character, respect, responsibility and many other traits. Pack 164 is a Christian, home school Cub Scout Pack that services the Greater West Houston/Katy area. Pack 164 promotes service to God, to country and to others. If you are interested and your son is in 1st through 5th grade, please contact Jack M. Jones at 281-558-5722.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
