It is also important that you instruct your friends and visitors to also be cautious and drive slowly while in our Community.

LEAVING TOWN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME? • Turn off the water to the house and open all outside valves and leave them open while away. • If you have a gas water heater, you want to turn the control to “Pilot.” • If the water heater is electric, you want to turn the breaker off. • You do not need to drain your water heater. • For your washing machine, it is a good idea to turn the valves off. • For your HVAC system, it is a good idea to set the thermostat to 55 or 60 degrees and open your cabinet doors. • Have your plumber turn back on your house water supply and flush out the lines.
CHILD SAFETY WHILE HOME ALONE If you have decided to allow your children to stay home alone during the holiday break, you will need to provide them with some basic training. The following are just a few suggestions: • Make sure they can lock and unlock the doors and windows. • Keep a first aid kit handy and teach them a few basics. • Provide a list of helpful numbers. • Write down your home address. • Go over steps to follow in case of an emergency. • Instruct them to keep all doors, windows and shades closed at all time. • Do not open the door for strangers! • For more tips, visit www.safekids.com.

PLEASE SLOW DOWN FOR OUR KIDS! Use caution as you travel through the community and watch for children walking to and from the bus stops. Acknowledge and obey the laws for school zones and bus loading and unloading. If the lights are blinking, you need to stop! If thirty seconds can’t be spared to slow down for a school zone or stop for a bus, what about the ten minutes it takes a deputy to write a ticket? Safety makes the most sense. A little patience and vigilance on the road will go a long way in keeping Lakes of Pine Forest’s children safe.
NO FARM ANIMALS ALLOWED Chickens, roosters and ducks are not allowed as pets in the subdivision. Domestic animals such as cats and dogs are the only types of animals allowed. Legal action will be taken against violators.
KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs in front of your property clean and free from yard waste and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to flow through to the drains. Grass growing in the curbs and drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high water we typically see with a heavy rain.

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

LABOR DAY FACTS Labor Day will be celebrated by families around the country with picnics, barbecues, road trips and sports events. It is the last blast of the summer vacation season. Labor Day now is a federal holiday and most Government offices, schools and, businesses are closed. Here are some interesting Labor Day Facts. • Labor Day in Canada began in 1872 in Toronto, but quickly made its way south to the U.S. Originally it began as a significant demonstration demanding rights for workers. • The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. The Labor Day parade of about 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square uptown to 42nd street and ended in Wendel’s Elm Park at 92nd Street and 9th Avenue for a concert, speeches and a picnic. • Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. • On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. • What are we celebrating? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce. • In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living. Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines. • The year in which the 8-hour day was firmly established was 1916 with the passage of the Adamson Act. This was the first federal law regulating hours of workers in private companies. • Traditionally people did not wear white or seersucker clothes after Labor Day, as it unofficially marked the end of summer. • The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend. • Labor Day is the unofficial last day of vacation before the start of the new school year (and mourned by students all over). The ReStore is open Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM. A key goal of the ReStore is to re-cycle and thus reduce the amount of solid waste placed into our vital landfills. FOUR CHEESE MARGHERITA PIZZA INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 8 Roma tomatoes, sliced 2 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crusts 8 ounces shredded Mozzarella cheese 4 ounces shredded Fontina cheese 10 fresh basil leaves, washed, dried 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese DIRECTIONS: Stir together olive oil, garlic and salt; toss with tomatoes and allow to stand for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Brush each pizza crust with some of the tomato marinade. Sprinkle the pizzas evenly with Mozzarella and Fontina cheeses. Arrange tomatoes overtop, then sprinkle with shredded basil, Parmesan and feta cheese. Bake in preheated oven until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 10 minutes. CHEESY ACORN SQUASH INGREDIENTS: 1 acorn squash, halved and seeded 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced celery 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place squash cut side down in a glass dish. Cook in microwave for 20 minutes on HIGH, until almost tender. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add celery and onion; saute until transparent. Stir in mushrooms; cook 2 to 3 minutes more. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley. Divide mixture in half, spoon into the squash and cover. Cook 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven until the cheese bubbles. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history. The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2015 is: “My Vision for America.” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2015.
