GRANDPARENTS DAY SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH

This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents. • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the ﬁrst Sunday after Labor Day. As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate

enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to ﬁll the void of their loneliness. In every neighborhood, there are elderly who would love an opportunity to be a Foster Grandparent. Your employer may match a percentage of the contributions you make to your retirement savings plan. It’s a good idea to do what it takes to get the matching limit. It’s free money that can really help your bottom line during retirement. • Start small and stay steady. The ﬁrst word is the most important - start. You should begin as early as possible to get the most out of your savings plan.

Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant.

• If you have children, find the right education plan. You have a number of choices when it comes to saving for a child’s education. Finding the one that makes sense for your situation takes planning and information. This takes us to the seventh and, quite possibly, the most important point… • Work with someone you know and trust. Everyone’s needs and goals are unique. Just as you go through many changes during your lifetime, your financial goals may change. You should work with a professional who not only know about various plans and strategies, but knows you and will stay with you through the long haul. Most people feel the best guidance they receive comes from a financial professional they know and trust. In the end, it all boils down to making a plan, getting started and saying the course. Cook’s Corner CHEESY ACORN SQUASH INGREDIENTS: 1 acorn squash, halved and seeded 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced celery 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place squash cut side down in a glass dish. Cook in microwave for 20 minutes on HIGH, until almost tender. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add celery and onion; saute until transparent. Stir in mushrooms; cook 2 to 3 minutes more. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley. Divide mixture in half, spoon into the squash and cover. Cook 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven until the cheese bubbles. The Northwest Flyers Track Club Youth Cross-Country Team kicks off the fall season with registration and a mandatory orientation for parents and athletes on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at 7 PM at Cypress Creek High School, 9815 Grant Rd., Houston. The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2015 is: “My Vision for America.” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media speciﬁed on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2015. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to ﬁnd, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
